Apple Tree Yard’s final episode aired last night to make room for next Sunday’s Bafta awards ceremony on BBC One. This time next year, might the thriller feature among the nominations?
Its performances absolutely deserve recognition. Emily Watson’s portrayal of Yvonne Carmichael has been detailed and nuanced. Mark Bonnar too, who played husband Gary, is clearly much more than just a safe pair of acting hands. Alongside them, director Jessica Hobbs told a clear-headed and empathetic sad story.
Best drama though? Not quite. Though the courtroom scenes made worthwhile points about the savagery and humiliation women, whether there as experts or defendants, can face on the dock, the...

Get those tissues ready!
In less than three months, Fox brings back Prison Break for a new nine-episode season with Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell reprising their roles as Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows for the latest chapter in the brothers’ saga. While it’s only a matter of time before Michael and Lincoln reunite, there’s another anticipated reunion that will be far icier.

For the majority of the show’s original four-season run, the heartbeat of Prison Break was the love story between Michael and his future wife, Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies). In the new installment, however, Sara is newly married to Jacob Ness (Mark Feuerstein), while raising her and Michael’s son, unaware that her ex-husband, presumed dead, is, in fact, alive and -- shocker -- behind bars.

That was disappointing.
Not a lot happened on Outcast Season 1 Episode 3 as no questions were answered and more mysteries were thrown our way.
I don't know about you guys, but I was pretty frustrated with this hour. It really went nowhere.
We got treated to another demonic possession, but this one was a bit different. It was certainly nastier than what was inside Joshua. At least Joshua didn't brutally kill like Blake did.
Blake was also immune to the Reverend's attempts at exorcism, which was new. I couldn't help but laugh when Blake started convulsing to convince Anderson his possession was real, only to turn around and scoff at the guy.
This was a pretty mean demon.
Is this actually your job? Do you do kid parties too?

Not long ago, a story made the rounds about how Jurassic Park and Independence Day star Jeff Goldblum may join a superhero movie, and now we know what all that was about. Marvel has just announced that Goldblum and Star Trek star Karl Urban have joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, and the site confirms the addition of the previously-reported Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, and Mark Ruffalo.
Goldblum will play "the eccentric Grandmaster," Urban "will add his might to the fray as Skurge," Thompson "will bring the classic hero Valkyrie to life on the big screen," and Blanchett is confirmed to be playing "the mysterious and powerful new villain Hela." That's a lot to digest, so let's break it down piece by piece:

In a brilliant bit of casting, both Karl Urban ("Dredd," "Star Trek") and Jeff Goldblum have joined the cast of Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok" for Marvel Studios.
The duo join an impressive cast list that so far includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Cate Blanchett as the villain Hela - the press release announcing this casting finally confirming the roles of Thompson and Blanchett.
Goldblum will play the eccentric Grandmaster while Urban will play Skurge. In the comics Grandmaster is one of the oldest living beings in the universe, an immortal cosmic game player whose preferred game is pitting two opposing teams against each other. Skurge (aka.
If "Another Time, Another Place" is remembered at all, it's probably for all the wrong reasons. The 1958 film afforded Sean Connery his first major leading role, even though he gets killed off a little more than half-an-hour into the story. I'm not giving away a spoiler here...you can see it telegraphed from the early moments of the movie. Connery was given "Introducing" billing, a common fallacy on the part of studio marketing departments that implied an actor or actress was making their big screen debut. In reality, Connery had been kicking around the British film industry for a couple of years prior to making this movie, but only in supporting roles. The other bit of trivia for which this film is remembered is due to a tragic real-life scandal. While co-starring with Lana Turner, Connery began to spend a lot of his free time with her off set.

Kanye West has pleaded with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for financial help after revealing he's in $53 million of debt.
The 38-year-old rapper launched yet another Twitter rant in the early hours of Monday morning (February 15), telling fans that he cannot achieve what he is destined to unless he has some financial backing.

Victor Meldrew’s death at the hands of a hit and run driver; David Brent’s post-paper merchant malaise as a lonely travelling salesman; Blackadder and pals going ‘over the top’ for a fatal date with German machine guns: British comedy has always seemed more than comfortable going out in as downbeat a fashion as possible; perhaps it’s just part of our national psyche - a buttoned down, self-effacing refusal to trumpet our own achievements, no matter how impressive they may be. Peep Show itself has used similar depressing beats in the past to close out previous runs: series 7’s New Year’s Eve being a perfect example - and although the show has spent the...

The appeal of The Martian is red-dirt simple: strand Matt Damon on a planet, and watch him try to stay alive. That’s exactly what you get out of Ridley Scott’s faithful adaptation of Andy Weir’s popular 2011 novel, a sci-fi survival story that you could hear screaming for a film adaptation, even in space. As the third straight Autumn-space blockbuster to land in as many years (and the second to feature Damon), The Martian lacks the technical ambition of Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, or the aspirational transcendence of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. But it does have the necessary component parts to make The Martian the most fun of such rollercoasters to the stars, with the stars.
See, when I say that the premise is Matt Damon is marooned on Mars, I mean Matt Damon is marooned on Mars. Technically, he’s playing Mark Watney, the botanist in a...

Marc Butan’s new company is in final talks with Mark Romanek to direct the film based on the 1980 California bank robbery and manhunt.
MadRiver Pictures will finance and produce Norco based on Adair Cole’s screenplay about the violent event that led to a shootout and high-speed chase in which more than 30 police cars and a police helicopter were destroyed.
Butan and Mason Novick will produce the story about the robbery in North Corona that is said to have changed law enforcement and led to what has become the increased militarisation of the police force. Edward Fee serves as executive producer.
“Adair wrote a script that tells this story with a raw, almost matter-of-fact intensity that it makes you feel like you are there,” said Butan.
“Adding Mark to the mix brings it all home, as he is one of the few filmmakers out there who provides the visual style this piece calls for but also...

Chicago – The film festival circuit is not for the faint of heart. Two young Spanish filmmakers – Geoffrey Cowper and Jesús Lloveras – are making their way across the U.S., as they promote their film “Day Release” (Tercer Grado). The pair started out in California – with a couple of film festivals there – and then stopped in Chicago, for the 31st Chicago Latino Film Festival.
“Day Release” is a gritty heist film, set against a scenario in which a prisoner (portrayed by Jesús Lloveras) is given a short time release from his sentence, and uses it to try and redeem what is left of his life. When his only relative kicks him to the curb, it is up to a stripper that he had met on his first night out to help him on the road to redemption. Geoffrey Cowper directed the film, and co-wrote the script and produced the film with Lloveras.

Steve Carell has officially completed his transformation from comedic actor to a dramatic one. No one is left doubting his talents as a versatile performer. Thus, whatever he does next is highly anticipated, and this latest project might just be the perfect fit for him to show both sides of his acting range.
The Wrap is reporting that Carell is now set to star in Marwencol, a movie based on a 2010 documentary planned over two years ago by Robert Zemeckis. Carell will presumably portray Mark Hogancamp, who as seen in the documentary is a man who was beaten brutally by teenagers to the point that he suffered brain damage and amnesia. He now spends his time creating miniature figurines of a scale, World War II era town. Here’s the full synopsis for the documentary:

Axes of Fulfillment: Williams Explores the Lives of Malcontented Young Adults
There’s a certain way to make multiple, intersecting storylines breathe life into a narrative structure, though it’s a rather abused formula of narrative free form often masking the lack of substance at hand. To be certain, director Ryan Piers Williams makes better use of this structure than a variety of recent examples, giving us a quiet, simplistic approach of four interrelated early thirtysomethings in Manhattan instead of bludgeoning with caustic twists a la Paul Haggis. If the material isn’t innately virginal, Williams takes some unexpected turns (not to mention the added attraction of having his wife, actress America Ferrera starring as one of the main characters). At the end of the day, some of their stories in X/Y are stronger than others, but even throughout the more familiar tics, it’s a well-acted quartet, divided...

Kevin Bacon spends most of the first eight minutes of The Following‘s Season 3 premiere smiling. This is notable, because it’s the longest stretch we’ve seen the eternally tortured Ryan Hardy happy in the series to date.
And given what happens in rest of the hour, it’s likely the last time we’ll see him this way for quite a while.
What new ways have the depraved minds of the world found to torment Bacon’s beat-down alter ego? What threat lurks now that Joe Carroll is — for the moment, at least — locked away in a federal prison?...

"Foxcatcher" was a pretty arduous ordeal, according to screenwriters E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman. It was something that only existed in the head of director Bennett Miller, who saw potent drama in the story of John du Pont and the wrestling brothers Schultz, Dave and Mark, but couldn't quite intimate what that was. Frye started chiseling away first, and latter Futterman came on to do more work. The result is a film that resonates on every level, the hard work clearly having paid off. The two never worked on the script at the same time, but have come to be quite friendly over the course of the film's PR circuit. Now they're in the mix for Best Original Screenplay recognition as "Foxcatcher" tries to find its stride on the circuit. I talked to Frye and Futterman earlier this week about cracking what didn't at first glance appear to be a movie,...

A fan-favorite character is returning to Supernatural and we couldn't be more pumped about it. Later this season, fans will finally get to see the long-awaited return of Cain! Played by Psych alum Tim Omundson (who will be seen next on ABC's musical comedy Galavant), Cain—of the biblical story of Cain and Abel—was first introduced to the CW show last season in the episode, "First Born." Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) tracked down the legendary killer when they were searching for the First Blade in order to kill Abaddon (Alaina Huffman). They more than succeeded in their mission in offing the Knight of Hell, but only because Cain passed off his Mark to Dean,...

Tonight's live finale show, kicked off with them doing special segments for each of the finalists: Alfonso Ribeiro & Witney Carson , Sadie Robertson & Mark Ballas and Janel Parrish & Val Chmerkovskiy. The segments detailed their journey through the competition as well as the couples commentating on a video of their favorite dance that they did this season. After that, they filled the next hour and a half or so with performances from past contestants, celebrity singers, and what not before the finalists danced their final dances for one more round of live scores from the 4 judges, which added to their overall score for the win. Sadie & Mark hit the dance floor, first, to rock out a Samba and Quick Step routine, which got them a perfect 40 score! Next, Janel & Val followed that up with a nice Fox Trot and Paso Doble routine for another perfect 40 score! And last, but definitely not least,...

Chicago – In the memorable film “Barton Fink,” the title character is asked to write a wrestling movie for Wallace Beery. If Fink had isolated himself long enough, he might have come up with “Foxcatcher,” demonstrating once again that a true story is much stranger than fiction.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Directed by Bennett Miller (“Capote”), the film is a dreamy nightmare, if that contradiction in terms can be used a descriptive. It is quietly weird, featuring performances from three popular actors – Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo – that stretch them beyond anything else they’ve ever done. The story of one of the wealthiest men in the world, John du Pont (of the du Pont chemical dynasty), as he tries to grasp some kind of identity and acceptance, is proof that no one gets out of their lives without some connection to the very emotions that can uplift or destroy them. The...

Emmett Carver is a pretty lousy detective. (Don’t just call him Emmett. It’s inappropriate.) He is not just cold, but on a cold streak. He is not savvy with the people he interviews and he lets his suspicions cloud logic and proof. He continues to put his focus on Paul, using some key info from Mark that the town’s priest goes to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting outside of Gracepoint to refuel the detective’s uncertainty about the man’s innocent, wholesome front. Ye of little faith, Det. Carver.
After the surprising but satisfying detour that Gracepoint took last week, we are still adhering closely to some of the major plot points from its British precursor, Broadchurch. Since the American iteration runs an extra two episodes, perhaps the surprising and disorienting seventh episode was just a way to expand the story rather than reframe what had been, to that point,...

The Apprentice is always at its best when Lord Sugar sends his hapless hopefuls away on a plane, unleashing the giddy 'entrepreneurs' on unsuspecting foreigners.
Whether it's trying to sell cheap cheese to the French, hurtling around the markets of Dubai or Michael Sophocles struggling to get his head around kosher chicken in Marrakech, the trips abroad have produced some classic blunders.
This year, the candidates got an extra special treat from Lord Sugar and were flown over to New York. Well, some of them were.
In a piece of evil cunning worthy of Blofeld, Sugar allowed half the teams to head over to the Big Apple to pitch to big advertising execs. The other half had to remain in Luton, slogging their guts out in the rain.
The candidates took the decisions from the Project Managers on who went to New York (funnily enough, both PMs opted to plonk...

Max Frye and Dan Futterman Main Cast: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo Vanessa Redgrave, and Sienna Miller, among others… Past Oscar relations: Futterman, Miller, and Ruffalo are previous Oscar nominees, while Redgrave is an Academy Award winner on top of her multiple citations Today we have another brand new article in this ongoing series of mine concerning certain high profile 2014 releases hoping to compete for some sort of actual Oscar attention as a contender at the upcoming 2015 ceremony. Next up for here for us is one of the more honored contenders of the year already in Foxcatcher. It’s a festival favorite that’s hoping to become one of the top prestige works in the Best Picture race. Does it have a strong chance? Well, let me get into that a little bit right now… This movie is a drama based on...

Though focussed on wrestling and named for an equestrian sport, Foxcatcher adopts the motions of a marathon runner. The pace is steady and unyielding. There are no sudden “a-ha” moments to throw things for a loop; each shift in its dramatic playing field is slowly, methodically built up to. Foxcatcher is an exercise in control and composure. If you’re into its rhythm from the first moment, you’ll be spellbound by it to the last. Find yourself following along even slightly off the precise pace director Bennett Miller moves at, and Foxcatcher, fittingly, becomes a little harder to pin down.
Based on true events, the film opens in 1987. In just three years, Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) has gone from gold medal glory, to addressing half-filled elementary school auditoriums for $20 a pop. More humiliating than the bored looks the kids give him is the fact that he’s...

It's been a rough week for the cast of the now-canceled TLC show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Last week, news broke that the matriarch of the reality TV family, "Mama" June Shannon, had begun dating a convicted child molester after breaking up with her longtime partner, Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson, earlier this year. June and her family initially denied the reports, but that didn't stop TLC from pulling the plug on the successful series and removing all episodes of the show from its stations. Now, more details about Mama June's alleged romance with Mark McDaniel are coming to light, and things aren't looking good for the Georgia-based family. Keep reading to find out everything that we know so far about the shocking scandal. Mark Allegedly Molested June's Eldest Daughter Anna Marie "Chickadee" Cardwell, June's oldest child, has come forward to identify herself as one of Mark's victims. Anna,...

Stars: Martin Delaney, Lucy Cudden, Alexander Perkins, Simon Merrells, Grahame Fox | Written by Simon R. Green | Directed by Simon Pearce
Jerry Mackay (Martin Delaney) leads his team of professional ghost hunters into a haunted village hall on a supposedly routine investigation for a tutorial for the Institute. With him are Anna (Lucy Cudden), a psychic to detect and protect the group from psychic attacks, Ian (Alexander Perkins), the tech of the group in charge of streaming the events back to the Institute and monitoring atmospheric changes, and Mark (Simon Merrells) as a cameraman with a dark past here to record the events. However, the group soon find out that the hall is more haunted that they thought, and Mark’s hidden past soon comes back to haunt him.
The phrase ‘cookie cutter’ is the first thing that came to mind when I started to watch Judas Ghost. This is a very basic story,...

Gracepoint, Season 1, Episode 4, “Episode Four”
Written by Anya Epstien and Dan Futterman
Directed by James Strong
Airs Thursdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
“I hope you’re happy”
“Why does everyone keep saying that to me today? I’m never happy”
While the central mystery of Gracepoint remains who killed Danny Solano, the show has evolved into much more. The town that looked perfect is full of countless devastating secrets and its characters are increasingly, deeply complex. Who Detective Carver (David Tennant) is and why he behaves the way he does has become just as fascinating as the search for Danny’s killer, and how the writers have woven these together has become the most exciting aspect of the show.
“Episode Four” continues to add to the investigation into Danny’s murder and the various suspicious characters that inhabit Gracepoint. How is Susan Wright (Jacki Weaver) connected to Vince? And...
