It seems that in their constant search for content, which recently has expanded to Central and South-East Asia, streaming services will occasionally pick films that, normally, would not find a place in their particular programs. Granted, “Aum!” (nothing to do with the Japanese cult btw) has Chicco Jerikho as one of its protagonists, gives an intense “One Cut of the Dead” vibe, and won a couple of awards in the 2021 Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival, but is still a rather unusual choice.

The penetration of Netflix in the Asian market has benefited a lot of people, but none more than Asean filmmakers, who finally found a way out for their films, a number of which were not perceived as European or art-house enough to screen at festivals and did not include those local elements that would make them popular in their country’s cinemas. “Ben and Jody”, actually the fourth entry in the “Filosofi Kopi” franchise, which includes two movies and a mini series, is one of these films.
Without so much connection to the previous entries, “Ben and Jody” begins with Ben being on the side of his hometown produce farmers, who are protesting the cutting down of the forest, against a corrupt local kingpin. Eventually, his henchmen attack, and the violent brawl that ensues ends up with Ben captured along a number of other villages. Meanwhile, Jody realizes that his...

Probably the most difficult, and occasionally the most defining film in the career of any filmmaker is the second one, particularly after a successful debut. Robby Ertanto Soediskam found himself in that exact position, after his rather successful first feature, “Ave Maryam” a title that we included in our Best Asean films of 2019. Those credits included Joko Anwar and Chicco Jerikho in the cast and Ical Tanjung and Wawan I. Wibowo in the crew, and an overall visual approach that seemed to wink at Wong Kar Wai. Unfortunately, the only thing that was left for “Jakarta, City of Dreamers” is Jerikho, and even he, just for a cameo of sorts.
The story focuses on Dom, a young man who tries to make it in the movie industry of Jakarta, but his temper frequently gets the best of him resulting in a number of failed opportunities. Out of coincidence, he meets a couple,...

The interview was conducted in 2017
Joko Anwar is already an established filmmaker, both in his country and internationally. He started his career in cinema as a film critic, continued as a scriptwriter, while his directorial debut came in 2005, with “Joni’s Promise”. His next two films “Kala” and “Forbidden Door“, received rave reviews from critics, and screened in festivals all over the world. In 2012 he shot “Ritual” and in 2015 “A Copy of my Mind“
We talk to him about his career, his success, making movies, violence and humor, and many more issues.
Before becoming a filmmaker, you were a film critic. Did that affect the way you look at films and the way you deal with critics?
When I was a critic, I was actually looking at films the way I had been before I was a critic: as a fan of films. And I am still now. I never looked for something to criticize.

Stories about forbidden love is not something new for cinema, not even when we are talking specifically for ones between priests and nuns, which is the main theme of “Ave Maryam”. Robby Ertanto however, manages to overcome almost all clichés of the category, particularly through the way he implements image and sound. Let us take things from the beginning, though.
“Ave Maryam” is screening at CinemAsia Film Festival
The story takes place in 1980, in a nursing facility for nuns. Sister Maryam “works” there, completely devoted to her chores and to God. However, when Yosef, a handsome and liberal pastor, who is to take charge of the local orchestra, arrives at the facility, all things change. Yosef does not waste much time in showing his feelings to Maryam, but she resists initially. He does not back down though, and the Sister finds herself in front of a life changing decision.

For 10 years, Five Flavours Film Festival has been presenting the best cinema from Asia, its meanings and contexts. Initially, the Festival focused solely on Vietnamese films, but it evolved to become a yearly review of the cinema of East and Southeast Asia, the only such event in the country.
The 10th edition is held in Warsaw, on November 16-23 (Muranów and Kinoteka cinemas), and in Wrocław on November 18-24 (New Horizons Cinema).
This year’s edition of Five Flavours is the biggest in history – it presents over 40 productions. The program combines artistic and commercial cinema, allowing the audience to experience the best Asian films have to offer. On the one hand, there are the intimate stories with a social angle, on the other – fresh, innovative blockbusters, filled with the sheer joy of cinematic creation, attracting millions of viewers in their homelands.

Joko Anwar has made a name for himself as one of Indonesia’s most popular directors, earning critical and commercial success for his dark thrillers, Kala, The Forbidden Door and Ritual. Arriving at the recent Osaka Asian Film Festival, where he also sat on the Competition Jury, the director brought something a little different, a touching drama set on the streets of bustling, modern Jakarta. A Copy of My Mind is the richly detailed tale of a young working-class couple and their everyday lives until an unfortunate act sets the pair on a tragic path. Sari (Tara Basro) is a movie-loving beautician who half-heartedly strives to improve her lot by moving to a better salon while her boyfriend Alek (Chicco Jerikho) makes a living adding subtitles...
