Cincinnati, Aug 19 (Ians) After back-to-back wins over former grand slam champions Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, England’s Emma Raducanu has been eliminated from the Western & Southern Open by America’s Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-4.
In a clash between two of the world’s top 11 players, it was the 28-year-old Pegula who proved slightly too good for her 19-year-old opponent in a number of different areas, reports Dpa.
Pegula was stronger both on serve and in her returns, winning 73 per cent (46-of-63) of her service points compared to 60 per cent (43-of-72) for Raducanu, while creating nine break point opportunities to Raducanu’s three.
She will now face the in-form Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals after the Frenchwoman defeated Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-5.
France’s Garcia has now won 10 of her past 11 matches, including a victory over world number one Iga Swiatek last month.

Cincinnati, Aug 16 (Ians) Amanda Anisimova passed her difficult opening-round test at the Western & Southern Open with flying colours, defeating world number 10 Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.
Ekaterina Alexandrova mounted a pair of comebacks to defeat No.13 seed Leylah Fernandez, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
Alexandrova will face either Naomi Osaka or Zhang Shuai in the second round.
Playing her first tournament since Berlin, Alexandrova rallied from 3-0 down in the first set and 5-1 down in the second set to upend Fernandez and level their head-to-head 1-1. Fernandez served for the second set twice, but Alexandrova wiped out two set points to prolonge the set, ultimately winning the last six games of the match.
Russia’s Kasatkina, who has beaten two of the world’s top-seven players in the past couple of weeks, had her serve broken six times by America’s Anisimova, thanks in large part to five double faults.

New York, Aug 12 (Ians) American teenager Coco Gauff will reach the highest ranking of her career after the 18-year-old defeated world number six Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the third round of the Canadian Open.
Gauff, who has never been ranked higher than her current spot of 11th, will overtake Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu and likely Russian Daria Kasatkina to move up to ninth when the next rankings are released after prevailing in an exceptionally tight match against her Belarussian opponent, reports Dpa. Incredibly, both Gauff and Sabalenka won exactly 131 points each, posting identical success rates on service points (77-of-131) and return points (54-of-131).
Gauff will be considered one of the favourites in the tournament after world number one Iga Swiatek was sensationally eliminated by Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia. Swiatek was sloppy, committing nine double faults to just one from her opponent.
