New projects by Turkish filmmakers Tolga Karaçelik, Ziya Demirel and Melisa Önel have been selected to receive the latest slate of funding. Established in 2011 as a joint venture between the Istanbul Film Festival - Meetings on the Bridge (MoB), the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein Film Fund, the German-Turkish Co-Production Development Fund has supported 53 German-Turkish co-productions with 873,500 Euros to this day. For the tenth consecutive year, the fund continues to strengthen and support the cooperation between German and Turkish filmmakers. In its latest announcement, the fund’s selection committee, which is made up of representatives of all three institutions, revealed the three projects, chosen from 12 applicants, that will receive a support of €40,000. Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Van Ditthavong’s feature directorial debut All Roads To Pearla (formerly known as Sleeping In Plastic), which had its world premiere at the 2019 Austin Film Festival. The crime-thriller stars Alex MacNicoll, Addison Timlin, Corin Nemec, Nick Chinlund and Dash Mihok. The film dark coming-of-age tale is set in a small Texas town and follows a high school wrestler who gets entangled with a beautiful drifter and her psychopathic lover. Pic is produced by Derek D. Brown, Red Sanders of Red Entertainment and Van Ditthavong of goPop Films. It will be released in select theaters and available on demand September 25. The distribution deal was negotiated by Gravitas’ Brendan Gallagher and Igor Princ of Princ Films on behalf of the filmmakers. Earlier this week, Gravitas announced the acquisition of Sundance 2020 documentary The Mole Agent.

The winners of the Istanbul Film Festival’s co-production platform include the upcoming project by Ziya Demirel, and the debuts by Gözde Yetişkin, Emre Sert, Selman Nacar and Nazlı Elif Durlu. The 15th edition of Meetings on the Bridge was compelled to adhere to the measures declared by the World Health Organization in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, hence it transferred its entire programme online. Running from 14-17 April, the international co-production, training and networking platform organised as an integral part of the Istanbul Film Festival drew to a close with the online announcement of the awards, where the head of Meetings on the Bridge, Gülin Üstün, thanked the team, the supporters, the awards sponsors, the jury members and the participants. The comedy, which premiered in Critics’ Week at Cannes in May, follows a middle class Turkish couple who try to cover up the forgery of their family history.
The decision was made by a jury led by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. The award comes with a prize of $18,000 (€16,000).
Album producer Yoel Meranda commented when receiving the award: “Many people here know that most of the stuff that helped this film get made happened in Sarajevo. It started in Sarajevo, and it’s amazing that we have completed this circle.”

The 21st Sarajevo Film Festival (Aug 14-22) wrapped tonight with Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Mustang winning the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Feature Film.
The film also received the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actress, which went to its whole female cast: Güneş Şensoy, Doga Doğuşlu, Tuğba Sunguroğlu, Elit İşcan, and Ilayda Akdoğan.
László Nemes picked up the Special Jury Prize for Holocaust drama Son Of Saul.
Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Chevalier won a Special Jury Mention, and its male ensemble, consisting of Yorgos Kéntros, Vangelis Mouríkis, Panos Kóronis, Makis Papadimitríou, Yorgos Pyrpassópoulos, and Sakis Rouvás received the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actor.
