The surprise success of shark movie “47 Meters Down” may be the best thing that ever happened to Byron Allen — or, the worst. His Entertainment Studios bought the title moments before Dimension Films shipped the inventory for its DVD premiere, and — with the help of some $30 million in P&A — it made $43 million at the box office this summer.
Now, Allen has spent the last month on a spending spree. Most recently, it’s “Hostiles,” Scott Cooper’s $50 million-budgeted Western starring Christian Bale that premiered at Toronto. The purchase price is unknown, but he’s reportedly committed to an Oscar-qualifying December release and about $15 million in P&A. That’s in addition to “Chappaquiddick,” another Toronto-Oscar title ($4 million acquisition, $16 million P&A) and Keanu Reeves’ sci-fi thriller “Replicas,” which cost $4 million for North America and is not an Oscar title, but comes with the promise of a wide release.

Summer is rarely the kindest season for indie film, but this year one title stood out: “47 Meters Down,” released by Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios. The Mandy Moore shark movie, which the distributor rescued from Dimension Films moments before it went direct to DVD, has earned over $42 million in its domestic release. It’s impressive — but Allen scoffed at the idea of becoming the new king of independents.
“I’m not chasing independence, I’m chasing Walt Disney,” he said. “I’m looking for a large piece of that box-office pie, not a tiny piece of that box-office pie.”
Allen, who began as a stand-up comedian, has the ambition to be a modern-day Walt Disney — or, he could be a 21st-century Don Quixote. As founder, chairman, and CEO of Entertainment Studios, Allen makes over $100 million annually syndicating and selling ad time on low-budget shows like “Comics Unleashed” and “We the People With Gloria Allred,...

Khloe Kardashian has no time for haters.
Following news that Kardashian family friend O.J. Simpson was granted parole on Thursday, users began flooding the reality star's social media accounts with messages of hate, bringing back to light the speculation that the former NFL star is her real father.

Cyber bullies didn't hold back, writing things like, "Oj runnin' right back into ya life #DaddysHome," "You're definitely Oj Simpson's child" and "Stop taking selfies and go see your dad!"
Others had her back, reminding the haters how hurtful it was to leave comments like this as her actual father, Robert Kardashian, who was one of Simpson's defense attorneys in the infamous 1995 murder trial, died in 2003. Simpson was found not guilty for the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

O.J. Simpson has been granted parole by the Nevada Board of Parole.
Simpson was granted the decision on Thursday while at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Lovelock, Nevada, where he appeared live via video teleconference in front of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners in Carson City. Simpson's eldest daughter, Arnelle, also spoke at the hearing in support of her father.
The decision was handed down by parole commissioners Connie S. Bisbee, Tony Corda, Adam Endel and Susan Jackson, the same four board members who granted Simpson parole at his July 2013 hearing on his kidnapping, robbery and burglary charges.

Espn’s new documentary “Oj: Made in America,” opens with stunning footage of a 2013 hearing in which Nevada Parole Commissioner Susan Jackson asks Oj Simpson about that time he was arrested in 1994. Simpson appears shocked that Jackson, like almost everyone else in America, doesn’t know the details already. The 1994 arrest was for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Simpson was acquitted the next year, but sentenced to 33 years in prison in 2007 for trying to steal sports memorabilia he said was stolen from him. Freestyle Releasing, the company co-founded by Mark Borde and the late Susan Jackson, has just been bought by Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios. The acquisition is significant in that Freestyle has an output deal with Netflix and is the distributor behind such faith-based fare as God’s Not Dead and Woodlawn. The company said will distribute about 15 to 20 films per year. Borde and his staff of about 25 are staying on board, which makes sense because the label is Borde…...
