Sometimes we fill these archetype roles to bring out the best in our friend groups, but more often than not these roles are set in stone during our youth, before we define ourselves, and coalesce into something toxic and decidedly unfriendly.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes put up a good fight, but John Wick put at end to the three-week box office reign of “Avengers: Endgame.”
Propelled by positive reviews, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” beat expectations with a debut of $57 million from 3,850 North American locations. That was enough to nab the box office crown from “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel’s latest juggernaut that collected $29.4 million during its fourth weekend of release.
“Parabellum,” the third installment of the action franchise, opened well above its predecessors 2014’s “John Wick” ($14.4 million) and 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” ($30.4 million). “Parabellum” is the first installment in the R-rated series to debut at No. 1 on domestic box office charts. “John Wick 3” also hit a franchise record overseas, bowing with $35 million from 66 international markets for a global start of $92 million.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is gearing up to take down Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Lionsgate’s third installment of the Keanu Reeves action franchise is over-performing forecasts, which had been in the $30 million and $35 million range. Stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski helmed the movie, written by series creator Derek Kolstad. Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos and Asia Kate Dillon also star.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” shot down $5.9 million at about 3,000 North American locations on Thursday night.
The original “John Wick” earned $950,000 during Thursday night previews, while “John Wick 2” made $2.2 million.
Previews for “A Dog’s Journey” grossed $275,000 from 2,450 theaters.
Liosngate’s third installment of the Keanu Reeves action franchise has been forecast to open between $30 million and $35 million at 3,850 domestic sites. That may be enough to top the fourth weekend of Disney-Marvel’s megahit “Avengers: Endgame.” The first “John Wick” debuted with $14.4 million and 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter Two” launched with $30.4 million.
“John Wick 3” sees Reeves return as an ex-hitman on the run from assassins. Stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski helmed the movie, written by series creator Derek Kolstad. Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos and Asia Kate Dillon also star.

Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is on the hunt for the No. 1 spot at this weekend’s box office and is off to a good start with $5.9 million grossed from 3,000 screens during Thursday previews.
That figure is more than double the $2.2 million made by “John Wick: Chapter 2” from previews en route to a $30.4 million opening in February 2017. “Chapter 3” is estimated by independent trackers for a $35-40 million opening and could open to as much as $50 million after critics gave it strong reviews with an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score.
If “Chapter 3” opens above $40 million, it will be the largest opening weekend for a Lionsgate release since the $102 million opening of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” in November 2015.

That would also mean that it would take the top spot from “Avengers: Endgame,” which has held No.

Lionsgate/Summit’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed a great $5.9M last night, a figure that blows away the R-rated action pic’s previous previews.
The first John Wick Thursday previews earned $950K while John Wick 2 made $2.2M, which repped 20% of its $10.95M Friday. John Wick 3‘s Thursday is even higher than the previews for Sony/MGM’s last James Bond movie Spectre which made $5.25M (which went on to earn a $27.4M Friday), and even 2012’s Skyfall ($4.6M Thursday, $30.5M Friday), though both of those pics were PG-13.
The Keanu Reeves R-rated action threequel from director Chad Stahelski (who helmed John Wick: Chapter 2) is poised to see the series’ highest domestic opening this weekend with $50M at 3,850 theaters, finally unseating Disney’s Avengers: Endgame in its fourth weekend which is expected to do $30M at 4,220. Endgame led all titles on Thursday with $3.4M at 4,662 bringing its three week running total to $741.38M.

Ah, the Spring, when hearts turn to love. But is there room for romance at the multiplex, with a certain Mr. Wick taking out a near-endless platoon of assassins just a couple screens down, next to naughty R-rated romp? Well, the studios seem to think so, especially since this is based on a popular “young adult” novel (The Fault In Our Stars certainly did well five summers ago). Unlike that flick, there’s no “grim reaper” lurking about as he did a couple of months past in Five Feet Apart, though, as we find out, there is a clock “ticking down” on our two incredibly photogenic TV star young lovers. Oh, and one half of the pair is an aspiring college astronomy major, which is why she gets to state the title The Sun Is Also A Star.

“I thought it would take me a lifetime to understand the human heart,” says Natasha Kingsley (Yara Shahidi), a montage of New York City playing underneath her voiceover. “All it took was a single day.” Given the placement of that line of dialogue, this means it takes roughly three minutes for someone watching The Sun Is Also a Star, the adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s 2016 Ya novel, to roll their eyes. This is the first time you’ll find yourself rotating those orbs a full 360-degrees in exasperation, and given...

For those who don’t live in New York, it must seem like an enormous city, teeming with people and activity, where you can disappear into the throngs. For those of us who live here, we know that New York is really a small town where you’ll run into your ex on the street or a chatty acquaintance on the train who wants to talk all the way to your stop. (Didn’t they bring a book?) And whether they’re coincidence or fate, these chance encounters and their nature are at the mushy, gushy heart of “The Sun Is Also a Star,” director Ry Russo-Young‘s romantic teen drama based on Nicola Yoon‘s novel.

Ask Natasha Kingston (Yara Shahidi) who she adores, and she’ll answer astronomer Carl Sagan, whose presence hovers like Cupid over Ry Russo-Young’s winsome and intelligent teen romance “The Sun Is Also a Star,” based on the bestselling Ya novel by Nicola Yoon. Like Sagan, Natasha is rational and trusts only in the scientific method. Love, she insists, is “legit dead-ass not real” — or at least, it’s not provable — until Natasha cosmically collides with moony high schooler Daniel Bae (Charles Melton) when her baseball jacket embroidered “Deus Ex Machina” catches the would-be poet’s attention.
Alas, tomorrow, Ins is scheduled to deport Natasha, an undocumented Jamaican. Between appointments with her immigration lawyer (John Leguizamo), the strangers have one day to wander the city debating their destiny, during which Daniel takes his cues from the New York Times’ viral 2015 Modern Love column “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.

“The Sun Is Also a Star,” was so painfully close to being an enjoyable experience. I should have felt swept up in Ry Russo-Young’s romantic drama about two interesting young characters from immigrant backgrounds falling for each other as they shared their passions and stories. Instead, there are periodic reminders that something about this movie is off. It’s not so distracting that the movie loses its sense of romantic fantasy, but it’s jarring enough that my audience’s early reactions of “Awww…” eventually turned into groans.
Based on Nicola Yoon’s Ya novel of the same title, “The Sun Is Also a Star” follows Natasha Kingsley, a Jamaican-born aspiring astronomer, on what could be her last day in New York City before she and her family are deported. In the middle of this chaotic time, during which she chases one last hope to stay with the help...

It takes a skilled eye to make New York City look beautiful these days. With overdevelopment threatening every inch of sun and the subway schedules keeping Xanax in business, the cinematic New York of “When Harry Met Sally” and “Manhattan” has long been a thing of the past. Yet a nostalgic reverence for the city that never sleeps brightens every frame in “The Sun Is Also a Star,” the fifth feature from native New Yorker Ry Russo-Young. The movie is her second Ya adaptation, and she wraps her New York love letter around a topical cross-cultural teen romance
In lieu of any natural chemistry between the young actors, however, Russo-Young’s direction takes center stage — it’s the best thing about the movie. While great direction isn’t the worst problem to have, the fact that the writing and acting couldn’t quite live up to their gorgeous surroundings hollows the experience of watching it.

After three weeks of mostly “Avengers”-fueled windfalls for the box office, the market is starting to slow down again heading into Memorial Day Weekend. Disney might be able to boost numbers again next week with “Aladdin,” but for now, Lionsgate is hoping to win over audiences looking for a more mature action flick with “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.”
The return of the Keanu Reeves revenge series comes as Lionsgate tries to rebuild after two years of box office frustration. 2018 saw domestic grosses plummet to $388 million, and new heads Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane have set out to rebrand Lionsgate as a studio that can be a haven for creators, particularly those with original ideas.

Though “Avengers: Endgame” continues to steamroll across the globe, Lionsgate’s “John Wick 3” is taking a shot at the domestic box office crown.
“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” the third installment of the gun-toting action franchise, is heading for an opening weekend between $30 million and $35 million from 3,700 North American theaters. Some box office watchers predict that positive word of mouth could propel those numbers north of $40 million. If ticket sales reach the higher part of that range, the Keanu Reeves-led thriller could have a solid chance at ending “Avengers: Endgame’s” three-week reign.
“Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel’s latest juggernaut that concludes the current phase of its sprawling comic-book universe, could collect around $27 million if it sees a decline similar to its past two outings. Ticket sales have dropped roughly 58% each weekend following its historic $357 million launch. Should “Avengers: Endgame” remain victorious in North America, it will be the first film...

When Ry Russo-Young arrived at Sundance in January 2017, the festival regular — she had previously debuted films in both the New Frontiers and Competition sections — returned to the annual Park City event with a surprising new feature: an adaptation of “Before I Fall,” based on Lauren Oliver’s Ya novel of the same name, a teenage spin on “Groundhog Day” with a dramatic bite. Featuring a breakout performance from rising star Zoey Deutch, the film pulled in mixed reviews, though nearly every critic singled out Russo-Young’s strong direction and ability to add new dimensions to a story audiences might have thought they already knew.

Could you fall in love over the course of a single day? Upon first glance, that's the premise of The Sun Is Also a Star, in which college-bound hopeless romantic Daniel (Riverdale's Charles Melton) attempts to convince matter-of-fact Natasha (Grown-ish's Yara Shahidi) that he can make her fall head over heels for him in just 24 magical hours. But there's a catch, just as there's far more to this Ya adaptation of Nicola Yoon's novel than initially meets the eye.
Natasha has been fiercely fighting against her family's sudden deportation back to Jamaica, so a future with Daniel seems not only unlikely, but flat out impossible. Despite their unfortunate situation, the star-crossed pair can't help but deny the sparks flying between them on what might be Natasha's last day in America. Regardless of if they figure out a way to stay together or not, we can already tell this movie...
