When it comes to iconic moments in rock history, one can include the Beatles’ rooftop concert, Jimi Hendrix’s literally incendiary set at the Monterey International Pop Festival, the 1973 Kool Herc party that helped launch hip-hop — and, of course, Alice Cooper and the chicken.
In September 1969, Cooper, not yet a household rock-weirdo name, was on the lineup of the Toronto Rock N Roll Revival, a festival that brought together two generations of rock stars. Pioneers like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley were on the bill, sharing the day-long...

John Lennon notoriously spoke out against much of Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles music. He even criticized the work McCartney did while in the band. McCartney took a similar stance against one of Lennon’s albums. Though he wrote liner notes for Two Virgins, McCartney didn’t think the album was all that good. Still, he took credit for parts of it.
Paul McCartney wasn’t a fan of one John Lennon album
In 1968, Lennon and Yoko Ono released Two Virgins, the first of three experimental albums they put out as a couple. The album drew major controversy for its cover; Lennon and Ono posed fully naked for it. The other Beatles fielded questions from reporters about it, to their frustration.
McCartney claimed that the cover raised his eyebrows, but he didn’t find it overly shocking. His bigger problem was that he didn’t much like the contents of the album.

When John Lennon released the album Two Virgins in 1968, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were politely shocked. While they tried not to get caught up in the public outcry over the album cover — which featured full frontal nudity from Lennon and Yoko Ono — they didn’t approve of it. Lennon said it surprised him that McCartney and Harrison were so prudish.
John Lennon said Paul McCartney and George Harrison were surprisingly prudish
Lennon and Ono chose to pose naked on the cover of Two Virgins because they wanted to reveal all of themselves to the public. It was a bold choice that brought the couple a great deal of blowback.
“It was insane!” Lennon said in The Beatles Anthology. “People got so upset about it — the fact that two people were naked. I didn’t think there’d be such a fuss. I guess the world thinks we’re an ugly couple.

While John Lennon was still in The Beatles, he put out an album with a cover that shocked people around the world. His bandmates even had to field calls from reporters about it. On the cover of Two Virgins, one of three experimental albums Lennon released with Yoko Ono, the couple posed naked. When his aunt saw the image, she complained that Lennon looked ugly. This, he said, was his intention.

The songwriting relationship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon was one of the most prolific of all time. They began to write on a more individual basis as the 1960s wore on, and their working relationship fell apart entirely when The Beatles broke up. McCartney noticed a shift in their dynamic when Lennon met Yoko Ono. He believed Lennon was intentionally putting distance between them to leave more time for her.

After John Lennon’s death, millions of people across the world joined Yoko Ono in mourning. His sudden death came as a shock to everyone and devastated many. Ono was so worried about how Lennon’s fans would react that she made sure to get a message out to them. Here’s what she wanted them to hear after Lennon’s death.

The world mourned the loss of John Lennon after his 1980 death. The sadness felt by music lovers was palatable, knowing The Beatles would never again have the opportunity to reunite. While John’s wife, Yoko Ono, organized a 10-minute silent vigil to honor him, there was no official wake. Why didn’t John Lennon have a funeral after his death?

One year before John Lennon was killed in front of his New York City home, eyeglass maker Masami Shirayama met the former Beatles star in Tokyo. Lennon liked a series of frames he designed and asked them for several pairs to be made to his specifications. However, the joy of sharing his designs with Lennon was shattered when, one year after Lennon’s death, Shirayama saw the cover of Yoko Ono’s Seasons of Glass. After seeing Lennon’s blood-splattered spectacles, he refused to capitalize on his death and quickly took action.

In 2021, Sean Ono Lennon was looking for a way to make a music video for one of his parents’ signature songs and feeling creatively stuck—until he had a meeting with former Pixar animator Dave Mullins. The song, 1971’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over), is probably the most popular piece of music John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote as a couple. But beyond appearing reliably on playlists around the world every Christmas, Happy Xmas (War Is Over) is also a peace anthem, and Sean wanted to reintroduce the song’s message. The song “just felt like it deserved some kind of piece to help get it out there for another generation,” Lennon says. The only problem was that every music video idea seemed to trivialize it. “It almost felt goofy,” Lennon says. “Like a Hallmark kind of thing. What are we going to show, a family sitting around a fire?...

Documentary about May Pang, the woman with whom John Lennon had an affair during his marriage to Yoko Ono, reveals that Ono was pulling the strings
As Yoko Ono enters her 90s, it is perhaps a tactless time to release a documentary about the woman with whom John Lennon had a love affair during a rough patch in his marriage from about 1973 to 1975, what he ungallantly called his “lost weekend”. This is the couple’s then assistant, the extremely smart Chinese-American May Pang, in her early 20s at the time, who emerges with grace and dignity from this engrossing film. The Apple Records A&r man and LA music eminence grise Tony King is quoted here saying of Pang: “She wasn’t just a little scrubber …” That Withnailesque phrase hardly does justice to an intelligent, beautiful and sweet-natured woman who gave unquestioning love to Lennon and appeared to single-handedly...

The Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has shared his joy at feeling like he was reuniting with John Lennon while working on the Beatles’ new song, ‘Now And Then’. The track, described as “the last Beatles song”, was sourced from a Lennon demo and finished by Sir Paul and Sir Ringo Starr decades after the original recording, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1, Paul said: “Before John died he was working on some songs and Yoko spoke to George Harrison, and said ‘I’ve got a cassette with some John songs on that he never got to finish. As key members of two of the biggest bands of the 1960s, it’s hardly surprising that John Lennon and Mick Jagger spent time together. Despite rumors of a rivalry — and a history of trading insults — the two bands got along. Lennon and Jagger were friendly for years, going out together and visiting one another’s homes. During one visit, Jagger and his fiancée witnessed some very unpleasant behavior by Lennon.

The Beatles stocked up on snacks in the studio. According to Beatles audio engineer Geoff Emerick, the band members were very protective of their food. If anyone touched their snacks, they exploded with frustration. This trait didn’t stop them from taking other people’s food, though.
The Beatles thought all snacks but their own were fair game for consumption
According to Emerick, The Beatles didn’t want anyone eating their snacks. They didn’t see a problem with eating other people’s food, though.
“Food was always very proprietary among The Beatles,” Emerick wrote in his book Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of the Beatles. “Mal [Evans] would get everybody his own thing, and there was no sharing, no eating family style; no one was allowed to try anyone else’s food. Yoko Ono’s constant presence in the studio began to wear on George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. Things grew so tense that, eventually, Harrison blew up over a digestive biscuit. The Beatles had always been protective of their food, and when he saw Ono eating his snack, he began screaming about her.

Ringo Starr had a solid relationship with all of his Beatles bandmates, but he was incredibly close to John Lennon. Even after Lennon’s murder, the drummer showed respect by refusing to record a song of his that became a hit. The song we really want to hear, though, is the extended jam Ringo and John played on that Yoko Ono interrupted.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were essential figures in the counterculture movement of the 1970s. Not only did their music embrace the avant-garde, but they also performed several publicity stunts, like the anti-war protest bed-ins. Lennon and Ono were seen as controversial figures on certain sides of the political aisle, and many were not pleased when the couple “hijacked” an American TV show in 1972.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono appeared on several episodes of ‘The Mike Douglas Show’ in 1972
After The Beatles ended in 1970, Lennon fully committed to voicing his politics in his music. While he had more subtle, calmer songs like “Imagine”, he also had more provocative and uncompromising songs like “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Power to the People”.
This made Lennon a not-so-popular figure with certain politicians, who didn’t want his counterculture brand to infect the youth. However, audiences were given a healthy dose of Lennon and...

Paul McCartney said many of his contemporaries used heroin, but he feels grateful that he never did. Throughout the 1960s, many musicians experimented with drugs. The Beatles were no different, writing whole albums inspired by their marijuana and LSD use. McCartney knew people who used heroin, including his own bandmate, but he never tried the drug. Looking back, he said he feels relieved he never used it.

One of the first people McCartney knew who used heroin was The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones.
“Brian was a nervous guy, very shy, quite serious and maybe into drugs a little more than he should have been, because he used to shake a bit,” McCartney said in The Beatles Anthology. “He was lovely, though. We knew he was on heroin.

Many might be unaware of the contributions Yoko Ono has made to music. Her music is avant-garde, with sounds often ahead of their time. John Lennon loved her music and infused his own work with a more stylized feel, leading to more unconventional work in his solo career. In the 1970s, Lennon heard a song by The B-52’s that he thought sounded similar to Ono’s work.

John Lennon had a little bit of experience with acting. Not only did he star in both Beatles movies, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, but he also had a role in 1967’s How I Won the War. One classic movie from the 1980s had a genuine interest in John Lennon, but unfortunately, the former Beatle was killed before the film went into production.

One is nearly certain to find The Beatles on the list of bands who worked well despite interpersonal dysfunction. When the band broke up, the former bandmates made their feelings toward one another clear. They spoke about each other negatively in the press, dealt with a very public lawsuit, and wrote pointed songs about one another. It’s easy to look at The Beatles and assume that, outside of their early years as a band, they did not like each other. The truth is far more complicated than that, though.

Jizo statues are a fascinating part of Japanese folklore. Often sighted near Buddhist temples, graveyards and sometimes on roadsides, they provide protection to travelers and the souls of children and unborn babies. They can be small and unassuming, with friendly faces like a classic Buddha, but sculpted more in the shape of a garden gnome. One such statue can be found in Sayama City on a small modern-day intersection; the statue and adjoining temple have been there for over 300 years, standing as a preserved relic of the Edo era, but the world around it has changed drastically. It sits awkwardly in the road, like a chunky doorstop that wedges open a portal between the past and present; Sayama resident and director Mitsuo Kurihara has built a strange, whimsical story around that very idea with his extravagantly-titled micro-budget feature film, “The Haunted Jizo of Shimo-Mizuno, Sayama City”.

John Lennon famously spoke about becoming a “househusband” to raise his second child, but he had a more distant relationship with his eldest son, Julian. Julian Lennon was born early in The Beatles’ time as a band, and his parents divorced when he was young. From there, his relationship with Lennon grew distant; he admitted to feeling like he hardly knew him. He shared why he felt this made Lennon a hypocrite.

The Beatles wrote their music and won over fans with their charm, but they couldn’t have reached their level of success without the people who worked with them along the way. Producers, assistants, managers, and former bandmates all helped The Beatles become the biggest band in the world. While they didn’t receive as much recognition as the band, some people who helped lift The Beatles to success have become the subjects of both documentaries and fictional movies. Here are five to check out.

In 1973, John Lennon and Yoko Ono separated for about 18 months. During that time, Lennon began dating their former assistant, May Pang. While many believed this to be an affair, Ono herself actually orchestrated the relationship. While Lennon and Pang did have a loving relationship, the initial suggestion caught Pang off guard.

One day, Ono walked into her office and told her that the former Beatle was going to start seeing other people, and she suggested she go out with him. In an interview with Variety, Pang said she found the situation “insane,” but still went with Lennon when he invited her to Los Angeles.

John Lennon was in the midst of an incredibly successful solo career when he was assassinated on Dec. 8, 1980. While his music career was cut short, he had some unreleased tapes made into a posthumous album. Later, a few of John Lennon’s unfinished songs were utilized for The Beatles Anthology, but Paul McCartney stopped one song from being released.

Between 1973 and 1975, John Lennon and Yoko Ono separated for a period he later called his “Lost Weekend.” During this time, he dated his assistant, May Pang, and the pair moved to Los Angeles together. The two had a loving relationship, so Pang was upset when John Lennon referred to it as his “Lost Weekend.” According to Pang, the former Beatle did apologize for calling their relationship this.

While Yoko Ono and John Lennon were a power couple in the late 1960s and 1970s, the two went through a rough patch between 1973 and 1975. The couple separated briefly, and John Lennon began dating their assistant, May Pang. While John and Yoko never officially separated, Pang recently revealed that Ono did ask the “Imagine” singer for a divorce.

The Beatles didn’t have nearly as bad a reputation as bands like The Rolling Stones, but even they dealt with scandals in their time as a band. Many of these seem tame by today’s standards, but they still placed the band in hot water with the general public. Here are four of the scandals that The Beatles faced throughout the 1960s.

In 1966, John Lennon entangled The Beatles in what was likely their biggest controversy. In an interview, he spoke about the enduring quality of rock music versus religion.
“Christianity will go,” he said, per Rolling Stone. “It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that; I know I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now.

Between 1973 and 1975, John Lennon briefly separated from Yoko Ono, leading to his “Lost Weekend” period. The “Lost Weekend” saw Lennon dealing with issues like alcoholism and depression, but it also was a period of creative acceleration for him. During this time, Lennon produced three albums and collaborated with artists such as Elton John and David Bowie. Here are the three albums from John Lennon’s “Lost Weekend”.

After The Beatles broke up, John Lennon made his dissatisfaction with the band clear. He rolled his eyes at the music they made as a group and insulted his former bandmates’ solo efforts. Despite all that he shared with the press, Lennon’s actions told a different story. Here are three times he showed that he didn’t hate the band as much as he said he did.

Elf star Michael Lerner has died aged 81.
The Oscar-nominated actor, best known for his roles in films such as Godzilla and Barton Fink, died on Saturday (8 April) night.
The news was announced on Instagram by his nephew Sam Lerner, an actor in his own right who appears in The Goldbergs, on Sunday (9 April).
Sharing a series of old photos of Lerner, Sam wrote that the family had “lost a legend last night”.
“It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me,” Sam wrote. “His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were married for years, but they spent a period of their relationship apart during his “lost weekend.” During this time, Lennon created new music, spent long, boozy nights out, and had an affair with the couple’s assistant, May Pang. This notorious period of Lennon’s history is the subject of a new documentary film, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story. In it, Pang shares her side of the story.

The Beatles were, and still are, a well-loved group, so much so that even John Lennon’s most controversial comments haven’t tarnished their reputation. He was easily the most divisive figure in the band. Lennon was a complex, sometimes cruel, figure who is viewed through a different lens today than he was in his lifetime. Still, there were moments in the 1960s and 1970s when his behavior raised eyebrows. Here are some moments that were controversial during Lennon’s lifetime.

In 1966, Lennon dragged The Beatles into their first major controversy. They had faced criticism for their music and their hair, but this was the first time it seemed the public might turn on the band. In an interview, he offhandedly made a comment about the band’s popularity.

Three new celebrities gained billionaire status in 2023, while one high-profile star lost the rarefied perch, according to Forbes.
Jimmy Buffett, LeBron James and Tiger Woods all reached the nine-zero threshold to make Forbes 2023 Billionaires List for the first time, the magazine reported.
Meanwhile, Kanye “Ye” West, who saw business deals crumble with Adidas, Gap, Balenciaga, JPMorgan Chase, Foot Locker and more following a series of antisemitic comments, reportedly costing him $1.5 billion, was the only star to fall off the list this year.
Just 14 entertainment and sports celebrities have worked their way to billionaire status since Forbes started ranking the world’s richest people, with eight of them climbing to those heights in the past three years.
That’s a significant change from the first list in 1982, when the only entertainers among the richest Americans were Yoko Ono and Bob Hope. By 2002, just six more were added, and only three of...

While John Lennon was a crucial member of The Beatles, there are several classic songs by the band that he didn’t appear on. Sometimes it was his choice to skip out on a track, while other times were due to conditions outside of his control. Here are five Beatles songs without John Lennon.
‘I Me Mine’ George Martin and John Lennon | Sspl/Getty Images
“I Me Mine” was written by George Harrison and is from 1970’s Let it Be. The inspiration for the song came after an acid trip where he became upset about his ego and other turmoil and business issues within the group. Footage from The Beatles: Get Back shows Harrison pitching the song to The Beatles with John Lennon and Yoko Ono sharing a dance while he’s playing.
Lennon wasn’t a fan of the song, mocking it by saying it belonged on a “playlist for a Spanish waltz.

Ringo Starr and John Lennon always had a close friendship. They were the two oldest Beatles members, lived as neighbors, and hung out together after the Fab Four fractured. The drummer was the last Beatle to see John before he died, and Ringo was blown away by his mindset at the time. Years earlier, John’s singing freaked out Ringo, and we understand where the drummer is coming from.

In 1970, John Lennon found himself on trial for his art, and it had nothing to do with his work in The Beatles. He had created a series of lithographs that showed his wedding to Yoko Ono and the couple’s honeymoon. Police found many of these images indecent and confiscated them. Ultimately, this was one of the best things that could have happened to the art.

The Beatles‘ Paul McCartney and John Lennon were best friends who were highly competitive with each other. This nature pushed the best out of each of the men as singers and songwriters. It also tinged their relationship. Often, they brought out the worst in each other. Here is three times Paul McCartney made some not-so-nice comments about John Lennon.

While The Beatles didn’t disband until 1970, John Lennon told the other members he was leaving in 1969. While the bandmates were shocked by his announcement, the writing was on the wall that this was coming. According to producer George Martin, one Beatles song was an early indicator that Lennon was on his way out.

On March 20, 1969, John Lennon married Yoko Ono. The two had an unorthodox honeymoon where the pair invited the media to their hotel room in Amsterdam, where they protested for peace. They held another “bed-in” protest in May, where the couple recorded “Give Peace a Chance.” “Give Peace a Chance” was the first solo release of Lennon’s career.
The single was released on July 4 with “Remember Love” as the B-side. It reached No. 2 on the British singles chart and No.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono were fierce activists for peace. The two attended rallies and protests and often released music that preached pacifism. In 1969, shortly after their wedding, Lennon and Ono held “bed-in” protests, inviting the media to their hotel room and calling for peace in their bed.

Lennon was an activist for many causes, including anti-war, human rights issues, and worker’s rights. While his politics were kept quiet with The Beatles, he expressed them frequently in his solo career. Some of these songs sparked controversy, such as “Woman is the N***** of the World”, “Attica State”, and “Bring on the Lucie”.
However, his best-known protest songs were ones where he called for peace, such as “Imagine”, “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”, and “Give Peace a Chance”. His wife,...

In 1972, footage from George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh was released as a documentary, and John Lennon left the premiere when Bob Dylan came on screen. Lennon was openly a fan of Dylan throughout the 1960s, but his feelings toward the musician eventually shifted. It’s not clear why Lennon left the screening early, though.

After The Beatles broke up in 1970, many wondered if John Lennon and Paul McCartney would ever team up again. The pair had a few opportunities, including a possible reunion on Saturday Night Live, but they were rarely seen in public together again. The pair almost went on a dinner date in New York, but Lennon’s reunion with Yoko Ono sidetracked that evening.

John Lennon is part of the songwriting duo behind “Hey Jude,” “Let It Be,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and other Beatles hits. He’s also a published author, creating the “nonsense” novels In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works. Here’s what this artist said about writing music and short stories.

In 1974, actor Pam Grier was with John Lennon for one of the most notorious nights of his “lost weekend” period. While attending a comedy show in Los Angeles, Lennon began heckling the Smothers Brothers, leading to him attempting to punch their manager and getting thrown out of the club. Lennon was not at his best, but Grier was surprised by the vulnerability he displayed. She said it was clear that he missed Yoko Ono.

In 1974, actor Pam Grier hesitantly joined John Lennon and a number of other celebrities at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. At the time, Lennon was separated from Yoko Ono and in his “lost weekend” phase. This period included many drunken, chaotic nights, and their visit to the Troubadour was no different. Security kicked Lennon out for heckling, but before that, he started a brawl. The next day, he sent Grier flowers and thanked her for not hurting him.

John Lennon dreamed of a better world with “Imagine” — and criticized Britain’s attitude toward immigrants in the Beatles’ “Get Back.” Still, this songwriter described himself as “slightly cynical,” even if he doesn’t want to be labeled as a cynic.

As the topography of Los Angeles changes with the addition of countless new restaurants and bars, pop-up concepts are adding a uniquely temporary yet powerful shift to the culinary landscape. More than ghost kitchens and yet not fully independent establishments, these destinations can take different shapes: some are limited-edition experiences, traveling from city to city, some are expansions designed to create more space for guests, and others are a chance to explore and promote new tasting menus indefinitely without the pressure of overhead. Whether you’re looking for a 10-course Japanese-Italian fusion experience or different spin on a familiar cocktail, these pop-ups are not to be missed.
