Sona JO studied Fine Arts and Social Sciences at Yonsei University. Her career in film production began with a Belgium-Korean co-production project, REACH FOR THE SKY, a film about the Korean education system. She has produced mainly feature documentaries, mostly about conflict, war, trauma, and women together with various Asian filmmakers. SMOG TOWN, a Chinese-Dutch-Korean co-production film dealing with the Chinese air pollution policy through the government officer's life was premiered in 2019 IDFA. The recent film she produced is COMING TO YOU, the first feature documentary about the parents and families of LGBTQIA+ people in Korea. It was screened in the 2021 Jeonju International Film Festival and awarded the best documentary and jury's special mention. She also produced 206: UNEARTHED, a feature documentary depicting the volunteers who excavate the massacre sites during the Korean War. It won the best documentary award in the 2021 Busan International Film Festival. She is now producing OUR BODIES, a feature documentary about the women's body and reproduction rights in Asian history, and EDHI AND ALICE, a hybrid feature documentary about the MTF trans people in South Korea.
