"Yellowjackets" was renewed for season three before the second season even premiered this spring, promising fans more chaos, cults, and cannibalism. Showtime confirmed season three in December 2022. The show's creators, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, have planned for the story of the ill-fated New Jersey soccer champs to be told over the course of five seasons, so the next season will put the story over the halfway mark.
But when the third season will finally air is, unfortunately, a huge unknown thanks to the ongoing writers' strike. Back in March, Lyle and Nickerson told The Hollywood Reporter that they were trying to start writing the new season before the strike began. "The possibility of the strike is very real. All we can do is keep moving forward until we have to put our pencils down," Lyle said. She added that the writers' room would begin officially meeting in April.

This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of "Yellowjackets."
One of my favorite things about the sophomore season of "Yellowjackets" is that this time around, the Showtime mystery series seemed to be as much in the business of answering questions as asking them. The survival horror series has always shared some storytelling DNA with "Lost," but while that series piled on mystery after mystery, "Yellowjackets" actually eased up on its more enigmatic elements for much of this season — and even went so far as to give us explicit solutions to a few major puzzles.
By the time the credits rolled on the second season finale, fans knew how Javi (Luciano Leroux) survived the winter, what the mysterious queen of hearts playing cards meant, what happened to Lottie (Simone Kessell) and Van (Lauren Ambrose) as adults, and exactly how the show's element of cannibalism came to be. Yet there's one...

The Season 2 finale of “Yellowjackets” left us with dropped jaws — and a lot of questions. We still don’t know who “pit girl” is, but we did see how things escalate to the point where the survivors began hunting each other to stay alive.
Although, as creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson told TheWrap before the Season 2 premiere, not every question will be answered. Said Nickerson, when asked if he minded the comparisons to the often frustrating “Lost”: “I don’t always want everything to be answered. Like, I do and I don’t, because so much of what made ‘Lost’ so engrossing was the mystery, not just the mystery of what happened, but the sort of reclamation of the spookiness of being alive. You can’t give all the answers and maintain that spookiness.”
With that in mind, here are some of the most pressing issues that still need to be answered.

Spoilers for "Yellowjackets" follow.
We've known since the "Yellowjackets" pilot that its leads, stranded in the Canadian wilderness during the late 1990s, would eventually resort to ritualistic hunting and cannibalism. The question is how? Season 1 consistently implied it would be the doing of Lottie Matthews (Courtney Eaton). Midway through the season, she began having visions and divining the will of the Wilderness itself.
The rest of the group increasingly turned to her for guidance. In "Doomcoming," Lottie wears a pair of antlers — foreshadowing the Antler Queen sitting at the head of the cannibals in the Pilot — and in the season finale, "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi," she kills a bear. The episode ends with her placing the bear's heart on an altar, with Van (Liv Hewson) and Misty (Samantha Hanratty) on either side as her disciples.
That finale is also when we learned Lottie was still alive in the present day...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 8 “It Chooses.”] We knew the Yellowjackets survivors did horrible things during their time in the wilderness… but somehow, the ending of “It Chooses” still managed to shock. In an intense, stomach-churning final sequence, a trembling Natalie (Sophie Thatcher) runs for her life from a howling pack of her teammates. She’d drawn the “human sacrifice” card fair and square, and the starving soccer players who never made it to Nationals demanded her flesh as sustenance. A sympathetic Javi (Luciano Leroux) offers Nat the safe place that allowed him to survive. They carefully run through the woods and over the frozen lake, only to be cornered by Shauna (Sophie Nelisse), Van (Liv Hewson), Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Misty (Samantha Hanratty), Akilah (Nia Sondaya), and Mari (Alexa Barajas). The ice cracks. Javi falls in. He screams for Natalie to help him, and while she tries at first, eventually the...

“Does a hunt that have no violence feed anyone?”
That’s the question posed to Lottie (Simone Kessell) by her “therapist” — quickly revealed to be her subconscious — in “Yellowjackets” Season 2, Episode 7, the question whose answer and meaning reveal themselves in ghastly fashion in Episode 8, “It Chooses.” Not only are our survivors starved and delirious, but they now hunger as much for food as for fight to acquire it.
Directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer and written by Sarah L. Thompson & Liz Phang, “It Chooses” is littered with indicators of everyone reaching the end of their tether during the bleak midwinter. There is hunger, there is starvation, and then there is whatever this is; exhaustion, blurred vision, hallucinations of blood spilling from the walls, cradling your pet mouse corpse and being tempted to take a bite out of his emaciated body. Only Nat (Sophie Thatcher) says it,...

Spoilers for "Yellowjackets" follow.
Like "Lost" before it, "Yellowjackets" has cultivated a fandom that thrives on piecing together the show's mysteries. The keystone mysteries go back to the Pilot — who is the girl killed in the series' opening scene by falling into a spiked pit? In turn, who are the masked girls who butcher her? The only identity we know for sure is the one with the carpet-like mask who serves the meat to the others — she unmasks herself at the end of the Pilot and turns out to be Misty (Samantha Hanratty).
Even the show's cast has been theorizing right alongside their fans. This means the show's creators work extra hard to keep the surprise alive — and not just the writers either. During season 1, costume designer Marie Schley spoke with GoldDerby about her process and inspirations. Interestingly, Schley notes that the story was written around costume requirements: "For storytelling purposes,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 7, “Burial.”]
It should have been impossible, but the “Yellowjackets” vibes have gone from bad to worse.
Not the show itself — indeed, Episode 7 might be the best Season 2 episode to date — but the atmosphere in Unspecified Canadian Forest Hell grows bleaker by the day. The survivors are starving, exhausted, trapped in a blizzard with a corpse while another freezes outside, and moving forward has never been more difficult (for some more than others).
“Burial,” directed by Anya Adams and written by Rich Monahan & Liz Phang, picks up in the tragic aftermath of Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) fatal delivery, where she is resting but not speaking and refusing to even drink water. The show doesn’t sit in the immediate trauma, even though the characters have probably dwelled on it for hours; Nélisse gives a mostly wordless performance this episode, conveying Shauna’s loss through heavy silence, whispered confessions,...

Episode five of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, “Two Truths and a Lie,” presents a dramatic transition. To what, exactly? The destination remains obscured, but this episode makes it abundantly clear that whatever is coming, it’s terrible news for the Yellowjackets. “Two Truths and a Lie” thrillingly marks the slow beginning of converging plotlines, setting up the potential for an unseen common enemy or force in both timelines. Until then, it plunges its characters deeper into turmoil and danger.
The episode starts with a proper introduction to adult Van (Lauren Ambrose), the owner of a video store adorably named “While You Were Streaming.” Her reunion with Tai (Tawny Cypress) comes fraught with high emotions, though it doesn’t get the emphasis you’d expect. Instead, it’s more about Nat (Juliette Lewis) and Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) tenuous truce to uncover the truth behind Travis’s death and Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey...

[Editor’s note: This review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 4, “Old Wounds.”]
The Yellowjackets may not have made it to nationals, but in Season 2, Episode 4, the competition is on.
As the winter of their discontent wears on, the stranded high school students and their actively disassociating coach (Steven Kreuger) are running out of food. The situation is so dire that people are ostensibly stealing raw bear meat from the food stores to eat more than their allotted share (or are they? More on this later). It doesn’t help that the group’s only two hunters can’t find any fresh game, or that they didn’t even catch the group’s main meals: the bear that bowed to Lottie (Courtney Eaton) and gave its life in Season 1 and the birds that mysteriously fell on their roof just one episode prior.
All of that comes to the forefront in Season 2, Episode 4, “Old Wounds,” written by Ashley Lyle,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
"Yellowjackets" is a show that thrives on mystery. At any given moment, the show is juggling about a half-dozen lingering mysteries, from the identity of the no-eyed man to the sinister French whispers in Lottie's ear to the fate of Shauna's baby. The show would be great even without loading up on mysteries — it's an excellent coming-of-age story, survival saga, and horror show.
Yet "Yellowjackets" is enriched by its mysteries, and at this point, there are so many to keep track of that new ones can get lost in the shuffle. Case in point: this week, in one of the show's '90s-set scenes, we learn that someone's been sneaking extra bear meat. "So who's the thief?!" Shauna (Sophie Nelisse) says with accusatory passion. "I guess they think they deserve more than the rest of us, which,...

It's only been a season and some change, and "Yellowjackets" has already given us so much. We've seen cults, blood rituals, amputation, murder, dog murder, possession, dramatic sleepwalking, and no one will be able to forget the ungodly traumatic feast of season 2, episode 2's big cannibalism scene. With the conclusion of this week's episode, "Old Wounds," we may soon be adding another one to that list: resurrection.

While at its core, the Showtime drama is about what happened to a group of teenagers after a plane crash stranded them in the wilderness for 19 months and how a few of the grownup survivors are reckoning with the secrets that amassed both then and now, it’s a puzzle box series that introduces new pieces with each episode.

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers from “Digestif,” the third episode of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, now streaming on Showtime.
From destroying the team’s only way out of the wilderness in the past to conducting citizen detective investigations in the present, Misty Quigley’s ambitions are always an attempt to further her relationships — switching from being a misfit, and an unknowing laughingstock — and to become a vital member of the soccer team at the center of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”
As played by actor Samantha Hanratty, in “Digestif,” teenage Misty outdoes even her Season 1 antics, with one particularly eccentric breakout moment. While the girls grapple with their latest decision, to feast on their late teammate Jackie, they prepare for the birth of Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) baby. The show's second season kicks off this week with a premiere that features a bit of a '90s plot time jump, but that's not the only major change; with the survivors in close quarters, several teammates who were previously background characters are now much more front and center.
Meanwhile, in the present day, two Yellowjackets who viewers didn't know were still alive are poised to crawl out of the woodwork, along with a familiar new guest star. It's a lot to keep straight with or without mushroom-spiked soup in your system, so we've got you covered with a quick character guide. Read on to refresh your memories on all things "Yellowjackets" — before one or more of...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 1, “Friends, Romans, Countrymen.”] Frozen Jackie snacks. Magical healing powers and visions. Sunny songs belted out unironically. We break down some of the weirdest wilderness moments in the Season 2 premiere of Showtime‘s Yellowjackets in this launch episode of our new weekly aftershow, The Buzz on Yellowjackets. Our guide for this episode? Samantha Hanratty, who plays the teen version of needy sociopath Misty Quigley (played as an adult by Christina Ricci). Hanratty shares her reaction to that shocking final scene of the season opener, which sees Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) — who’d been conversing with the frozen corpse of her best friend Jackie (Ella Purnell) the entire episode — eat her dead pal’s ear, which had fallen off during one of their “chats.” When the actress first read the scene, she was on her way to set in Vancouver with castmate Alexa Barajas, who plays Mari. “We were reading...

Buzz buzz! Season two of Yellowjackets has arrived, with several new cast members, a snowier backdrop and darker plot that star Jasmin Savoy Brown admitted when first reading the script made her think, “This is so fucked up.”
“I was excited to explore what was going to happen but freaked out for what everyone was going to think, to be honest,” she told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday. “Hope we don’t get canceled!”
Season two continues the show’s dual timeline of the ’90s high school soccer team that crash-landed in the remote wilderness, spliced with the team’s grown-up members nearly 25 years later who are still trying to deal with the trauma of what they experienced. Winter has now hit the teen survivors, leading to some harsh filming conditions for the young cast members, who shot indoor cabin scenes on a...

The official trailer for Showtime’s Yellowjackets dropped two weeks out from the premiere of the much-anticipated second season. The new trailer starts with an introduction by the cast and features Florence + The Machine’s new cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.” It also includes screaming, chanting, and Shauna reluctantly admitting she is a murderer.
“I’m such a huge fan of Yellowjackets and this era of music, and this song especially had a huge impact on me growing up, so I was thrilled to be asked to interpret it in a ‘deeply unsettling’ way for the show,” stated Florence Welch about “Just A Girl” and Yellowjackets. “We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone who’s first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani it was a dream job.”

When Samantha Hanratty was filming the terrifyingly intense plane crash sequence that kicks off the plot of Showtime’s Yellowjackets, she had to do the opposite of tapping into her own emotions. “I’m a very emotional person; I’m an empath,” she says. “I, as Samantha, would have been sobbing. I would have been having a mental breakdown. But Misty takes in things so differently.”
In the first season of the Emmy-nominated series about a high school soccer team lost in the wilderness in 1996 and their adult counterparts dealing with the repercussions of their actions in the present day, Hanratty chilled audiences as the calculating loner Misty Quigley, played as a grown-up by Emmy nominee Christina Ricci. But as many times as Misty sabotages her classmates, drugs her soccer coach or coolly amputates a leg, Hanratty also feels for the curly haired...
