The Russian Pavilion and the virtual stand at Marché du Film are organized by Roskino with the support of the Russian Cinema Fund and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
Despite complications due to the coronavirus pandemic, Russia will take part in the world’s major film festival. The Russian Pavilion will open on July 6 at Village International in Cannes. The Pavilion traditionally represents Russia at the Festival and the Marché du Film market being the main information center for promoting Russian cinema on an international scale.
The Pavilion will become a place of offline discussions, presentations, and networking of Russian companies with their foreign partners. Online events will also be held at the Russian Pavilion for those who are not able to reach the festival because of the epidemiological situation. The Pavilion will serve as a meeting point for the Russian participants of the official program of the Festival with press representatives.

Russian director Ivan Bolotnikov after several prizewinning documentaries made his feature debut in 2016 with “Kharms,” a biopic of renowned Russian absurdist author Daniil Kharms that travelled on the international festival circuit. His sophomore outing is ambitious upcoming drama “Palmyra” based on the true story of a former Russian military, a widower, who learns that his only daughter Maryam has been recruited by terrorists and run off to Syria.
The film, which is now completed, is produced by Proline Film Studios chief Andrey Sigle, who interestingly also composed the “Palmyra” score. It’s being presented to prospective buyers at both the Roskino Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition market and the upcoming Cannes virtual Marché du Film.
Bolotnikov and Sigle both took questions from Variety about the film.
Ivan, what drew you to the project?

No reason has been given for the change in opening film.
Danish director Bille August’s The Chinese Widow will open this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff, June 17-26), replacing Ann Hui’s Our Time Will Come, which was previously announced as the opening film.
However, Our Time Will Come will still play in the Golden Goblet competition at Siff. No reason was given for the change by either the festival or the film’s producer Bona Film Group.
Both films are set in China during the Second World War. Starring Emile Hirsch and Yu Nan, The Chinese Widow tells the story of an American pilot who is shot down and saved by Chinese villagers. It remains unclear if the film has been made under the recently signed Danish-Chinese co-production treaty. August recently served as jury president at the Beijing International Film Festival.
