Fresh off her turn in Marvel‘s maligned “Madame Web,” Dakota Johnson is returning to indies with Christy Hall’s feature directorial debut “Daddio.” Sean Penn co-stars as a lone-wolf taxi driver and old-guard New Yorker who picks up Johnson’s character, Girlie, from JFK. On the journey back to Brooklyn, they share a heart-to-heart about life, love, sex, relationships, and more.
For Johnson, working with Hall was no different from working with more established filmmakers. “Well, it’s different every time. It depends on the person,” Johnson told IndieWire. “Sometimes you would never guess that it was somebody’s first feature, and sometimes it can be really challenging.” Production took place in just 16 days and primarily on a soundstage. Not only does Johnson star, but she also serves as a producer, alongside her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly.
“This is, it’s just such a gem of a project.

The actress, who plays Lily Bloom, spoke to Entertainment Tonight on Friday about the movie, which Justin Baldoni also directed and starred in.

“If you don’t know the book, the movie works,” she continued. “I don’t think there’s any way that if you read the book and you saw the movie that you wouldn’t be thrilled. We really worked hard on that,” she added. “I also believe if you...

Dakota Johnson, her producing partner Ro Donnelly and writer-director Christy Hall were on hand to celebrate the New York premiere of their upcoming film, Daddio, at the Tribeca Festival on Monday night.
The film, which also stars Sean Penn, follows Johnson’s Girlie as she gets in a cab, driven by Penn’s Clark, to take her from John F. Kennedy airport to her midtown Manhattan apartment. Over the course of their ride, the two have a “life-altering conversation” about the important relationships in their lives.
Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that she was drawn to Daddio because of “the idea of humans being strangers and being so vulnerable with each other and connecting with each other and having a sort of life-altering conversation.”
The Madame Web star also produced the film alongside Donnelly through their TeaTime Pictures banner. “It was amazing,” she said of producing and acting in the film.

The first trailer for the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s popular book It Ends With Us features an ominous soundtrack. In the first few moments of the preview — shared ahead of the film’s theatrical release on Aug. 9 — Lily Bloom (Blake Lively) is settling into her newly-opened Boston flower shop when she meets Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni), one of the location’s first visitors who will change her life forever. About one minute into the trailer, Taylor Swift’s Folklore deep cut “My Tears Ricochet” strips away the fluff of any potential fairytale romance.

Lately, Dakota Johnson has been battling a sea of negative criticism. Ever since the trailer for her critically blasted superhero movie, Madame Web, first debuted, the actress has suffered trolling. The negativity only intensified once the Sony flick was released, and the aftermath of it can still be felt.

Yet, the actress does not seem to be deterred by all that is negative but instead is gearing up for another theatrical release. Starring alongside the controversial star Sean Penn in the upcoming film Daddio, Johnson is playing a cab passenger named Girlie.

A selection at Telluride and TIFF last year, Christy Hall’s directorial debut Daddio follows Dakota Johnson’s character who picks up a cab at the JFK airport on her way home. Driving the cab is Sean Penn’s character and what unfurls is a feature-length conversation on pain, romance, and secrets. Originally conceived as a stage play, the film never quite escapes those trappings to deliver something truly cinematic, but it does provide a decent enough showcase for both actors. Ahead of June 28 release from Sony Classics, the trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with an unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study — encapsulated in one single cab ride — explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. Dakota Johnson (“The Lost Daughter”) and Sean Penn (“Mystic River”) are set to star in the upcoming single-setting drama “Daddio,” written and directed by Christy Hall in her feature-length directorial debut. The new cab ride film envisioned initially as a stage play, will hit the big screen on June 28, and Sony Pictures Classics has released a trailer for “Daddio,” giving audiences a better idea of what to expect from the pic that previously debuted at Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival last year.

Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.
Johnson produces alongside TeaTime Pictures partner Ro Donnelly, who told IndieWire that Girlie is emotionally “reflective” of the below-the-line team behind the feature itself.
“Because she is our generation of women who are still approaching these men in a nonjudgmental way because it’s fascinating. We’re not threatened by it,” producer Donnelly said. “And that reveals her power,...

This initially premiered at both the 2023 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals last fall. It's currently set for a release in select theaters starting in late June this summer. The New York City drama is set entirely in a taxi cab departing from JFK airport. Sony and Columbia Pictures have moved the release of “It Ends With Us,” the upcoming romantic drama starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, from June 21 to Aug. 9. It is the second time that the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel has received a release date change, as it was previously set to open on Feb. 9 ahead of Valentine’s Day.
Lively stars in the film as Lily Bloom. While living in Boston, she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, played by Baldoni, and believes she may have found her soul mate. Soon questions arise about their relationship — and to complicate matters, her high school love interest, Atlas Corrigan, comes back into the picture, putting her relationship with Ryle in jeopardy.

Sony Pictures Classics announced on Tuesday that it will release its indie drama Daddio, starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, in theaters nationwide on June 28.
Marking the feature directorial debut of Christy Hall, who also penned the script, Daddio world premiered at last year’s Telluride Film Festival before going on to screen in Toronto. The film is described as character-study, encapsulated in one single cab ride, that explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. It’s about truth and illusion, how we so effortlessly substitute one for the other out of survival — about the hurtful memories of childhood, past trauma manifesting in profound ways, and the dance between the pain and poetry that is the human experience.

Dakota Johnson is hopping in a cab to distance herself from the Madame Web fallout for Christy Hall’s upcoming drama Daddio. Setting a destination for theaters on June 28, Daddio stars Johnson and Sean Penn in a character-driven feature about human connectivity and appreciating life’s intricate events that lead to significant changes. The highly anticipated film, written and directed by Christy Hall in her feature directorial debut, received an enthusiastic response and critical praise following its premieres at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn headline single location drama Daddio, and the first trailer has landed: more here.
It would be fair to say that Dakota Johnson hasn’t had the best month. It began with a press tour that seemed to be doing more harm than good in trying to promote Sony’s Spiderman spin-off Madame Web, in which her comments during the tour generated a huge amount of press. This was swiftly followed by a slew of vitriolic reviews – we gave Madame Web a firm but fair one star.
Still, Johnson has many films in the pipeline, the next one to be released will be single location philosophical drama Daddio. For reference, this is the film Johnson was talking about when she described Hollywood as “heartbreaking” and “fucking bleak” – a conclusion she came to because Daddio took “a lot of fighting to get made.”
At any rate, Daddio...

Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Sean Penn have been confirmed to have been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming untitled feature.
According to a source, the movie is said to be set in California in a contemporary setting and will be an ensemble piece.
Warner Bros, who are producing the movie, are keeping all other details on the project top secret. However, it is said that the production is set to be Anderson’s most expensive project to date with an estimated $100 million price tag.

It Ends With Us leaves behind Focus Features’ Lisa Frankenstein, Bleecker Street’s Out of Darkness, and Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red on Feb. 9 and moves to a weekend where there’s Focus Features/New Regency’s The Bikeriders.
Pic’s blurb: Though coming from a complicated past, Lily Bloom has always known the life she wants. While living in Boston, she meets neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid and believes she may very well have found her soul mate. Soon questions arise about their relationship and, to complicate matters, her high school love interest, Atlas Corrigan, comes back into the picture putting her relationship with Ryle in jeopardy.

Warner Bros. is starting the new year off strong by partnering with some of Hollywood’s most sought-after talent for film projects worth getting excited about. After promoting its partnership with Tom Cruise for original and franchise-related films, WB announced a union with Paul Thomas Anderson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall for an untitled film by Anderson.
Cameras on Anderson’s untitled film start rolling early this year in California, with the filmmaker directing, writing the script, and producing alongside Sara Murphy. Details about the plot remain a mystery. However, Deadline‘s exclusive report says the project includes a contemporary setting and is the “most commercial” endeavor Anderson has put their hands on. Powered by a commensurate budget, the untitled film results from a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chair/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy forged while making Anderson’s Licorice Pizza.

Exclusive: Warner Bros has Paul Thomas Anderson set to direct Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn as well as Regina Hall in an untitled film that will begin production this year in California. Anderson wrote the script, and he will produce the film with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.
The film is currently untitled and they’re keeping the logline under wraps. We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget. It came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM. That film got three Oscar noms for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay and Best Director for PTA.

Exclusive: Dakota Johnson has signed with CAA. The agency will rep her in all areas, including her TeaTime Pictures production company.
Johnson, who had been repped by WME, stars alongside Sean Penn in Daddio, which she produced through TeaTime. Christy Hall wrote and directed the drama, which premiered at Telluride and Toronto. Sony Pictures Classics acquired it, and will release in 2024. Johnson drew raves for Daddio, which is just her and Penn in a yellow cab from JFK to Manhattan, two strangers who briefly get to know each other and the problems each faces. The dialogue is razor sharp and Penn turns in one of his best performances in years. Johnson is right there with him the whole way.
Johnson will next be seen playing the title character in Madame Web, based on the Marvel superhero character for Sony. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, the film is slated for a big theatrical release in February.

Sony Pictures Classics is in negotiations to pick up “Daddio,” TheWrap has learned. While the acquisition is not yet a done deal, SPC is on the verge of grabbing the Sean Penn/Dakota Johnson taxi melodrama for North America, Latin America and various European and Asian territories.
The picture, directed by Christy Hall — who previously co-created the Netflix series “I Am Not Okay with This” — had a well-received debut at Telluride and then at Toronto. Her directorial debut concerns a taxi driver (Penn) and a rider as they get to know each other during a trip from the JFK airport to Manhattan.
Repped by CAA Media Finance and WME Independent, the film was granted a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, which allowed the two actors to do publicity in Toronto. It was produced by Hercules Film Fund, TeaTime Pictures, First Love Films, Raindrop Valley, Projected Picture Works and Rhea Films.

The high-concept elevator pitch description for Christy Hall’s “Daddio” would probably be something along the lines of “‘Locke’ as a two-hander,” or maybe “‘Collateral’ without the killing,” though it’s better than either of those loglines might lead you to believe. The premise is a simple one: Dakota Johnson (never named on-camera) plays a young woman coming home to New York who takes a cab from JFK to her home in Hell’s Kitchen.

Though “Daddio” is an intimate chamber piece between Sean Penn as a taxi driver, and Dakota Johnson as a passenger trying to get from John F. Kennedy airport to Hell’s Kitchen, it focuses on a near universal issue, especially coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic. “We don’t talk to each other anymore, and we’re terrified of talking to people that are different from us,” said director Christy Hall to IndieWire.
This love letter to New York, and the power of human connection, was the screenwriter and playwright’s spec script that got her the job running acclaimed Netflix YA series “I Am Not Okay With This,” a job that paired her with executive Ro Donnelly. “‘Daddio’ was forever in my mind, so when I left Netflix I was like, ‘God, that role is so perfect for Dakota.’ We made it happen,” said the producer who runs TeaTime Pictures with the star.

The star power at TIFF will still be shining bright this year.
On Thursday, the Toronto International Film Festival is kicking off for its 48th year, and with it will come plenty of celebrities.
But with the Hollywood writers and actors guilds still on strike, things will be a little more subdued.
A number of productions featuring guild members have been granted waivers by their unions in order to promote their films at the festival, while many international productions uninvolved in the strikes are also being presented.

Ask buyers and sellers at the Toronto Film Festival what they expect for the festival acquisitions marketplace that opens Thursday, and they’ll say either boom or bust. Even though there are almost 50 available titles here.
The uncertainty that twin Hollywood strikes has wrought brings uncertainty to what, on paper, should be the most robust Toronto in a long time. There will be far fewer stars on display; many backers have decided not to apply for SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements, because it means turning off the streamers that have been the most prolific buyers of festival films for years. The optics of them acquiring a film now and accepting the guild terms they are fighting are too daunting.

Here comes the fall festival circuit during the history-making double union strike. In these still uncharted waters, there remain quite a few unknowns. For instance, it’s unclear how interim agreements — either signed or not — will affect a project’s potential for pickup. Then, there is the question of whether AMPTP studios — supposedly sitting on stockpiles of cash — will be looking to buy given a lack of new content, or if they will abstain with an uncertain negotiating road ahead.
In the weeks leading up to the festival, there was chatter about how studios, including Netflix, had been messaging that they would not be buying projects that had signed interim agreements. (Netflix had no comment.) If a streamer did sign on to these agreements, they would indeed be signing on to SAG-AFTRA’s requirement that actors for streaming projects receive 2 percent of subscription revenue produced by those projects, as defined by metrics from Parrot Analytics.
