Everyone knows the problem: there’s too much really good TV these days, and not enough time to watch it all. But if you’re a fan of gripping, adult drama that follows twisted, complicated relationships with high stakes, it’s well worth putting aside a few hours of your time to watch Sky Atlantic’s Domina.
Domina is the story of Livia Drusilla, the wife of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. The historical Livia is a truly fascinating character. Her father fought and died with the assassins of Julius Caesar, she endured a siege with a toddler, then she ended up married for 50 years to the man whose army was on the attacking side in both cases. She had more power and influence than any other woman in Roman history and worked together with Augustus to help him rule, but his reign was peppered with the untimely deaths of multiple family members,...

German director Robert Schwentke’s directorial career has swung in a few directions; he has made Hollywood actioners like Flightplan with Jodie Foster, the adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife and a film that almost defines the idea of a personal movie, based on his own diagnosis with testicular cancer. He has both written and directed Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes, an eccentric competition choice, even by the inclusive standards of the Berlinale – starring John Malkovich as the eponymous Stoic philosopher. Over two hours, he delivers what is largely a monologue: as a performance, it has at least the strength of dogged determination. As a film, however, Seneca is almost unendurable.
Shot in and around an open colonnaded pavilion constructed in the Moroccan desert, Seneca draws on Roman historian Tacitus’ account of the great thinker’s reluctant suicide in Ad 65. A celebrated public figure, Seneca is also on...

In his dark historical comedy “Seneca,” Robert Schwentke explores themes of power, corruption and hypocrisy as he traces the fateful final days of the Roman philosopher and dramatist that followed his souring relationship with the despotic Emperor Nero.
The film stars John Malkovich in the title role, Tom Xander as Nero and an ensemble cast that includes Geraldine Chaplin, Louis Hofmann, Mary-Louise Parker and Julian Sands.
The story of a morally conflicted, opportunistic character grappling with tyranny run amok can be seen as a continuation of the subject matter at the heart of his acclaimed 2017 World War II drama “The Captain,” says Schwentke. Both “are concerned with individual choice within a totalitarian system. They both deal with the theme of collaboration, opportunism and survival and how tainted one can become.”
Schwentke says he was most intrigued by the stark contradictions of Seneca, who he describes as a “complex character and a paradox.

BBC Books has released a new edition of ‘Doctor Who and the Daleks’, David Whitaker’s adaptation of the first Dalek story that was originally published in 1964 (under the title ‘Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks’) and the first Doctor Who novel ever published. The difference with this re-release (there was an earlier one in 2011) is it’s in hardback with illustrations by American artist Robert Hack (who started working on the Idw Comic range in 2008). You may have seen his art in the comics and TV title sequence of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Hack’s approach to the art, which is the really distinctive element here, is a successful fusion of the monochrome TV original, Whitaker’s prose, and the Peter Cushing colourful movie version from 1965. There are some of the same bold colours from Cushing’s movie but usually one colour dominates each painting,...

This article contains spoilers for all of House of the Dragon season 1.
Author George R.R. Martin draws on lots of different things for inspiration when he writes his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon. The influence of the medieval era on the history of Westeros is well known, from Henry I making his barons swear loyalty to his daughter Matilda just as Viserys I makes his lords swear loyalty to his daughter Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood (adapted into House of the Dragon), to the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters in A Song of Ice and Fire that partly mirrors the conflict between the real life houses of York and Lancaster in the 1400s.
But there’s another semi-historical influence on Martin’s world that is not so often talked about. In 1934, Robert Graves’ novel I,...

Warning: contains Barbarians spoilers
Barbaren – to give Barbarians its original German title appears to have been a massive hit for Netflix. It came out of nowhere in the last week of October and whipped straight into the streaming service’s Top 10.
It would be unusual then, if Barbaren weren’t renewed for a second season. Though there’s no official word yet – and Netflix has been slashing and burning through a pile of single season new commissions of late – fans should be hopeful about the chances of a return for the German-language historical drama.
Based on real-but-jazzed-up historical events, season one concluded with the climactic Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 Ce. Luckily for us, history kept going after that, and Barbarians co-leads Arminius and Thusnelda (played by Laurence Rupp and Jeanne Goursand) feature in several subsequent chapters that would provide ample inspiration for more TV drama.

Warning: contains Barbarians spoilers
The story told by Netflix’s Barbarians – the Germanic tribes rising up to take a sizeable chunk out of the invading Roman Empire in the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, also known as the Varian Disaster – is a key historical event that took place in 9 Ce.
The battle’s events are related in several historical sources, among them ‘Germania’ by Roman historian Tacitus. The tribes’ victory dealt Rome a heavy blow which is now seen as a turning point in the history of the Roman Empire, which lost up to 20,000 soldiers over the three-to-four-day battle, effectively halting its advance across what is now mainland Europe.
If you visit the city of Detmold in modern-day Germany, you’ll see a towering, 50-metre high monument of a warrior in a winged helmet, with his sword held aloft. Erected in the 19th century, the statue celebrates ‘Hermann’, the German name for Arminius,...

That's how you jam pack the back end of a season.
Being Hanna, precious little got tied up while essential characters were left alive for another season on Hanna Season 2 Episode 7 and Hanna Season 2 Episode 8.
So, Amazon, when's that renewal announcement for Hanna Season 3 coming?
Before we rewatch Hanna Season 2, let's analyze these episodes when things finally started to go right for Hanna and company.
Granted, most of the earlier problems were created by two desperately lonely orphans buying into a false sense of family.
First, Hanna located the Meadows so she could rescue Clara, who didn't want to be saved, on Hanna Season 2 Episode 3.
Not having learned her lesson, Hanna invited Clara on her first breakout attempt from The Meadows, which was spoiled when Clara blabbed to snitch Sandy on Hanna Season 2 Episode 4.
Finally, a converted Hanna/Mia hemmed and hawed too long with Marissa, effectively dooming their second...

It's about time that Hanna made up her mind.
Too much hesitation on Hanna's part led to a mounting body count on Hanna Season 2 Episode 5 and Hanna Season 2 Episode 6.
Granted, most of these bodies were Utrax employees, the Hanna equivalent of red shirts. But some innocents also got killed along the way.
The only one who seemed to have her head on straight was Marissa. That's a frightening thought.
What was Carmichael thinking keeping her hanging around? As she proved, she's dangerous, even inside a cell.
Sure, he wanted to discover who was helping her. But doesn't Utrax, or the Pioneers, have people to handle that?
Put some distance between Hanna and Marissa. I mean, Marissa seems determined to do what's best for Hanna, even if Hanna has no idea what that is at times.
I mean, Hanna fell for the Utrax family trap, just like Clara did.
It's easier...
