About 35 employees of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures gathered on Wednesday across the street from the 500 million shrine to the Oscars and filmmaking to deliver a letter informing new Academy CEO Bill Kramer that they have gathered majority worker support for a new union and asking for voluntary recognition.
Three weeks ago, the new union Academy Museum Workers United went public with its intention to unionize with Afscme Council 36, which represents unions in local government and private nonprofit groups. After the Academy released a statement saying it would move forward with a union election through the National Labor Relations Board, the Amwu filed its petition this past week for such an election, which if successful would give the Academy Museum’s 180 workers labor representation.
But now, Afscme and Amwu have announced that a major of the museum’s employees have signed unionization cards and are asking the Academy to...

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz introduced a resolution today to support legislation that would eliminate live guns and ammunition from television and movie productions following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a weapon discharged as star Alec Baldwin handled it on set.
“While movies can be convincing and very realistic — they are supposed to be make-believe,” said Koretz, who introduced the resolution. “A single gun accident, let alone a fatality, like the one that occurred on the Rust set and the ones that killed Brandon Lee and Jon-Erik Hexum destroy the lives of not only the victims and their families, but the lives of the other actors and crew who forever after are burdened with the emotional trauma of avoidable accidents.
“The idea that even one misfire has caused danger is outrageous,” he continued. “The clear solution is banishing live guns and ammunition from the sets of television...

Hoping to quell a rising tide of homeless encampments that have become a political lightning rod in the city, a City Council anti-camping ordinance went into effect today.
The new law bars homeless encampments in specific areas, such as parks and near schools. However, the details of the new ordinance are still being worked out. The selection and processing of the areas where such encampments will be banned has yet to be determined. Moreover, outreach teams to the area homeless will be required to talk to the affected campers before citing them.
Those details mean the impact of the new law isn’t going to be apparent for some time. Still, its implementation is yet another step in quelling growing community outrage at a seemingly out of control problem that has taken over many parts of the city.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 today to have the city attorney prepare an ordinance requiring people to show proof of at least partial vaccination against Covid to enter most public indoor spaces in the city, including restaurants, bars, gyms, concert venues, movie theaters and even “retail establishments.”
Council President Nury Martinez — who is in line take over as mayor once Eric Garcetti leaves — and Councilman Mitch O’Farrell introduced the motion last Wednesday.
“Covid-19 could be eradicated if we had mass vaccinations across the country and across the world,” O’Farrell said before noting the United States’ history eradicating smallpox and mostly eradicating polio through vaccinations.
“Why on Earth is it Ok in 2021 to have 30 plus people die in the county of Los Angeles from Covid over a three-day period, including an 11-year- old girl, when we have a vaccine that could have prevented all of that, accessible to everyone,...

A Los Angeles City Council committee directed its staff report back on ways of encouraging — possibly through
citations or other enforcement — adherence to requirements that residents wear masks to prevent spread of the coronavirus.
During the council’s meeting on Friday, Councilman Paul Koretz said in his district, about half the people he sees walking in public are not wearing masks. This despite orders from both Mayor Eric Garcetti and Gov. Gavin Newsom. In June, Newsom issued an executive order requiring people to wear them at all times when outside the home.
“I truly can’t fathom the people who are politicizing mask wearing — literally for some people, a choice that will (mean) life and death,” Koretz said. “It seems like we should start to consider it reckless endangerment of others to not wear a mask.”

Updated, 11;55 Am: Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred today gave his first public interview regarding the sign-stealing scandal that has rocked the sport. He also took time to respond to the Los Angeles City Council’s resolution that urges Mlb to give the tainted 2017 and 2018 World Series titles to the runner-up Dodgers.
The bottom line: Don’t hold your breath, L.A..
“I think the answer from our perspective is to be transparent about what the investigation showed and let our fans make their own decision about what happened,” Manfred told Mlb Network on Wednesday.
He confirmed that the 2017 champion Houston Astros were caught using cameras to steal signs from catchers through the 2017 season but said the league still is probing 2018 champs the Boston Red Sox over allegations that the team also cheated.
“We haven’t concluded our investigation with the Red Sox,” Manfred said in the interview. “So it...
