The Mean Girls remake—this time with showtunes—was a big win for Paramount Pictures over a long holiday weekend in the States. A film originally pegged and budgeted for Paramount+ until someone realized folks still love the 2004 classic (shocker!), this economical redo of the Lindsay Lohan touchstone galloped to an impressive $33.2 million across its first four days. That matches practically all of its reported $36 million budget right out of the starting gate.
So the movie studio has reasons to pop champagne this week (and maybe send a few bottles over to Reneé Rapp for her diva turn as Gen Z’s very own Regina George). Nonetheless, even audiences who enjoyed what was a pretty down-the-middle reworking of a 20-year-old staple had to be a little peeved by how some fellow moviegoers reacted. Because, speaking purely anecdotally, it seemed like a lot of folks were put off by the whole...

Our collective hunger for fresh Thanksgiving Horror will hopefully be satisfied this week with the release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving in theaters, but what other holiday-themed horror movies can you watch to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving in the coming days?
There aren’t all that many to choose from – don’t forget the 1987 cult classic Blood Rage! – but a select few can currently be streamed on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox.
Here’s all the Thanksgiving Horror now streaming on Screambox…
First up, cannibalistic pilgrims dish out gory carnage in director Erick Lorinc’s low-budget indie The Last Thanksgiving, which premiered at Salem Horror Fest back in 2020.
In the retro-style slasher, which is home to a handful of particularly nasty kills, “A family of cannibalistic pilgrims attacks a restaurant that stays open for Thanksgiving.”
Meagan wrote in her review for Bd, “The Last Thanksgiving is a trashy, blood-soaked ode to ‘80s slashers,...

We bounced all over the place in May, starting with Fred Dekker’s genre mash-up Night of the Creeps before getting deadly serious with Gus Van Sant’s pseudo-Columbine film Elephant, trippy with Alex Garland’s surreal Annihilation. Now we’re back in ultra campy territory with the silly and heartfelt Tammy and the T-Rex (1994).
In writer/director Stewart Raffill‘s low-budget horror comedy, high schooler Tammy (Denise Richards) is in love with Michael (Paul Walker) but her jealous ex Billy (George Pilgrim) won’t let her go. After a near-deadly prank, Michael’s comatose body is stolen by mad scientists Dr. Wachenstein (Terry Kiser) and his assistant Helga (Ellen Dubin) who want to use the boy’s brain to pilot an animatronic dinosaur.
But true love can’t be denied! Tammy, Michael and her gay best friend, Byron (Theo Forsett) will stop at nothing to find a...

For the last two weekends, Salem Horror Fest 2020 gave fans a killer virtual outlet to experience all kinds of panels, podcast episodes, and indie horror films and shorts for fans from all over. Here’s a look at my thoughts on a trio of films that played during Shf 2020: Danni and the Vampire, The Last Thanksgiving, and Papi Ramirez vs Giant Scorpions.
Danni and the Vampire: As someone who can’t resist vampire movies or genre comedies, I absolutely loved Danni and the Vampire, which is the feature film debut from writer/director Max Werkmeister. A charming story about finding acceptance and connection in a world that is often cold and detached, the story follows the peculiar monster hunter of sorts, Danni (Alexandra Landau), who recently captured the Jersey Devil, and is doing her best to try and chase down that high once again. After she randomly hooks up...
