The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. We’ve previously heard cast member David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) describe the film as a beautiful, heartfelt drama – and now Dastmalchian’s co-star Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) has told Movieweb that The Life of Chuck is a beautiful masterpiece.
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.

Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

"What makes them come home?" "They love their home so much, they'll die trying to get back to it." That's a bit on the nose with this story. Paramount+ has revealed an official trailer for a movie titled Little Wing, a drama based on a true story about a moody young girl struggling with her parents and their divorce. It's set to premiere streaming on Paramount+ in March, skipping theaters entirely. The story follows 13-year-old Kaitlyn, who is dragged into the world of pigeon racing while she deals with her parents' divorce and the impending loss of her home. The film is based on Susan Orlean’s 2006 New Yorker article, and centers on a teen who tries to solve her mother's financial problems by stealing a rare bird, only to become unexpected friends with its owner, a man named Jaan. Brooklynn Prince stars as Kaitlyn, with Brian Cox as Jaan,...

With only two films in James Cameron’s Avatar series since 2009, it is challenging to imagine the existence of five installments by 2031, let alone two more movies later. That’s right, folks. I said two more movies! According to James Cameron, he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but there’s a twist. Instead of dedicating the remainder of his mortality to the effects-driven, money-printing franchise, he could pass the torch to another filmmaker.
Speaking with Collider about the Avatar franchise’s future, Cameron said, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) is headed back into the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Flanagan has announced that production has wrapped.
Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. Horror enthusiasts have another reason to celebrate as Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Life of Chuck‘ takes shape. Initially teasing fans with big names such as Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, and Karen Gillan, the excitement intensified with the inclusion of horror legends Heather Langenkamp and Matthew Lillard.
It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first collaboration between Flanagan and Langenkamp. They previously teamed up for Netflix’s ‘The Midnight Club,’ which aired back in 2022. While Langenkamp’s return to Flanagan’s fold has garnered attention, the addition of Matthew Lillard, famed for roles in ‘Scream’ and ‘Thirteen Ghosts,’ further beefs up the roster.
And the surprises don’t end there. Mia Sara, remembered fondly from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Out,’ makes a significant comeback after a hiatus from the limelight. Others joining the project include David Dastmalchian, Harvey Guillén, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Antonio Raul Corbo,...

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. It continues the story of the Sully family as they hide out from the humans of the Rda, who have returned to Pandora after years away. The family finds sanctuary with the Metkayina, a water-based group of Na'vi who have developed physical adaptations for swimming.
You may have heard the stories on-set of the actors holding their breath underwater, aka freediving, for a very long time. This includes Kate Winslet — who played Ronal, one of the Metkayina — holding her breath for a whopping seven minutes and 15 seconds. In fact, all the swimming scenes were done "wet for wet," meaning that they were all shot underwater. That meant the actors had to learn to swim under the surface for a long time without scuba gear,...

Well Go USA has revealed the official trailer for a sniper action thriller mashed up with horror film called Bone Cold, featuring the tagline: "sometimes we make our own demons." The film is heading direct-to-video in June, another of these junky action films getting dumped onto DVD right away. After bad intel from headquarters results in a tragic civilian death, an elite sniper duo attempts to flee the area but can’t seem to shake a mysterious, inhuman creature stalking them from the shadows. They are hunted by something sinister and monstrous... hungry and determined. Starring Jonathan Stoddard, Matt Munroe, Trinity Bliss, Jennifer Khoe, Shaan Sharma, Elise Greene, and Danielle Poblarp. Dionne Warwick, whose career is forever linked to the man who wrote so many of her hit songs, remembered Burt Bacharach today, releasing a statement on the late composer and calling him her dear friend and musical partner while conceding the two “had their run ins.”
“Burt’s transition is like losing a family member,” Warwick said in the statement. “These words I’ve been asked to write are being written with sadness over the loss of my Dear Friend and my Musical Partner. On the lighter side we laughed a lot and had our run ins, but always found a way to let each other know our family, like roots, were the most important part of our relationship. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, letting them know he is now peacefully resting and I too will miss him.”

The Critic’s Choice Awards at Century City’s Fairmont Hotel were a noisy affair as everyone with a stake in the outcomes roared for their favorites. The A24 gang at the front to the side of the stage erupted loudly when Ke Huy Quan won yet again (as “Elvis” star Austin Butler and many others stood and applauded) for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and then again and again as it went on to win a total five awards including Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Picture for directing duo Daniels.
It was the A24 table all over again when Brendan Fraser wept to another standing ovation as he accepted his award for his moving performance in “The Whale.” At night’s end, as the room cheered them on, Daniels thanked A24, “the most supportive studio of all time.” These winners have strong momentum going into the SAG Awards, BAFTAs,...

James Cameron has already filmed Avatar 3 and 4 scenes due to an issue he has with Stranger Things.
The director told Entertainment Weekly that he has shot parts of the next two instalments in the Avatar franchise to avoid having the younger actors age out of their roles.
While performance-capture VFX can transform the actors into their blue alien-like characters, it cannot do much to prevent growth spurts.
Cameron wanted the films to remain as authentic as possible and referred to the Stranger Things casting as something he was aiming to avoid.
“I love Stranger Things, but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school, and they look like they’re 27,” Cameron said.
Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who plays Tuk, was seven when she was cast in the role. Now, she is 13. Similarly, Spider actor, Jack Champion, was cast at age 12, and is currently 18.

Although it was a 13-year wait for a follow-up to 2009’s “Avatar,” the gap between “The Way of Water” and its sequels are set to be much shorter, with the third film and part of the fourth being shot at the say time as the recent blockbuster. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron revealed why: so the child actors in the film will still look like children.
In the film, there are several child and teen actors who play main characters Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldana) kids and other adolescents growing up on the planet of Pandore. For example, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss was 7 when she was cast as youngest-child Tuk, while Jack Champion was 12 when he was cast to play Spider, a human child looked after by Jake and his family; the two are now 13 and 18 respectively. Director James Cameron has said that Avatar: The Way of Water needs to make somewhere in the range of 2 billion at the global box office in order to break even. It has earned over 600 million after just one week in release, so it’s chugging its way toward that goal. Regardless of what this Avatar sequel earns, Avatar 3 is already guaranteed to reach theatres next year, on December 20, 2024. It’s the fate of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 that hangs in the balance. Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, and the first act of Avatar 4 were all filmed during the same epic production schedule – and while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron said this was done to avoid “the Stranger Things effect”.

As Avatar: The Way of Water continues to blow up worldwide, James Cameron has indicated he’s game-planning far into the future.
Writer-director Cameron has told Entertainment Weekly that he’s shot scenes from a proposed Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 concurrently with the recently released sequel. He did so to avoid having the younger cast members age-out, bringing up Netflix’s Stranger Things as an example of the problem of time marching on.
The Way of Water introduces Tuk and Spider. Because Champion was “growing like a weed,” the second, third, and first act of the fourth movie had to be done in one production, Cameron said.

James Cameron recently told Entertainment Weekly that part of the reason he decided to film “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avatar 3” and some of “Avatar 4” all at once is because he wanted his franchise to avoid what he called “the ‘Stranger Things’ effect,” or when child actors grow up so fast in between installments that eventually they stop resembling children. “The Way of Water” introduces several young characters, including Tuk and Spider.
Because Champion was already “growing like a weed” when cast in the film, Cameron knew he was going to have to film a chunk of the “Avatar” sequels all together. “Otherwise, you get — and I love ‘Stranger Things’ — but you get the ‘Stranger Things’ effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” the director said. “You know, I love the show. It’s okay, we’ll suspend disbelief.

Thirteen years after the release of Avatar, the first in a planned series of sequels has finally reached theatres – and you can find out what our own Eric Walkuski thought of Avatar: The Way of Water by watching the video embedded above, or reading the review Here. Director James Cameron has said that Avatar: The Way of Water needs to become the third or fourth highest grossing film in history to break even, which means it will need to earn somewhere in the range of 2 billion. But cast member Edie Falco shot her scenes so long ago (four years ago), she thought the movie had already been released at some point and flopped.
During an interview on The View, Falco said (with thanks to Variety for the transcript), “I saw the first one when it was out. The second Avatar I shot four years ago. I’ve been busy and doing stuff.

I am hardly the first writer to point this out, but the state of the "Avatar" franchise is strange. The original film, released in 2009, quickly became one of the biggest box office juggernauts of all time. There's a Disney theme park land dedicated to it. Online fandoms for the film exist in surprisingly large numbers, and yet, right up until today's release of its sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," the debate on whether or not "Avatar" has the cultural significance and longevity to sustain its own box office goals has been loud and ongoing.
To be fair, while it's rarely wise to bet against director James Cameron, it's easy to see why many are cynical towards "Avatar." At its core, while it's telling a deeply anti-colonialist story, it's told from a white male Pov, and this criticism is nothing new.

“Titanic” director James Cameron’s first venture to Pandora made way for the new sequel film “Avatar: The Way of Water” splashing into theaters this weekend. The first encounter with the beautiful, otherworldly planet of Pandora in 2009 introduced us to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) who form a Pocahontas-like bond that leads to a romance crossing many lines on both sides of the uneasy rapport between their people. Jake comes to Pandora a paralyzed ex-marine who can no longer use his legs, excited to be able to walk again in the tall blue body of his Avatar. What starts out as an attempted conquest and of the Na’vi people turns into what Jake’s fellow soldiers see as a betrayal when he sides with the Na’vi and Neytiri to save their homeland from destruction and colonization.

James Cameron is the guy who quoted his own movie when he won the Best Director Oscar in 1998. More than that, he’s the guy who wrote that quote for the movie: “I’m the king of the world!” And on the evening Titanic won 11 Oscars, he really was. For the record, there is nothing wrong with a night of exuberance for the filmmaker. It just tells you a little bit about the guy who made Titanic. And Aliens. And True Lies. And the good Terminator. Both of them, in fact. Plus, Avatar.
You know what? Cameron should call himself the king of the world more often, because at least in the land of big Hollywood spectacle, there are few figures who loom larger. The above line-up of films is a murderer’s row of innovative action and melodramatic grandeur. Perhaps more importantly to the industry,...

While James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar" was visually dazzling, and pushed movie special effects to new highs, one can find many, many flaws in its story. Most notably, "Avatar" can serve as a tired a trite "White man goes native" narrative, left over from the days of American colonialist fantasies by James Fenimore Cooper. Plenty of feature films have repeated the trope in the past, of course, with "Lawrence of Arabia," "Dances with Wolves," "Pocahontas," and "The Last Samurai" being more prominent examples.

Spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water follow.
Ever since "Avatar" was released in 2009, creator and director James Cameron has promised that multiple sequels would follow. As the last 13 years rolled on, Cameron's insistence on the sequels coming to fruition began to resemble a boast more than a promise. However, just like George Lucas before him, Cameron was playing the long game when it came to his vision for the future of the planet Pandora and its inhabitants, and the second film (entitled "The Way of Water") has finally arrived.
Yet while Cameron's commitment to the series is now abundantly clear, what exactly will occur in the sequels has remained a mystery prior to the release of the new installment. It's wild to realize in today's landscape of films and shows saturated by previously existing IP, but there are no prior "Avatar" novels, comic books or video games that act...

ReviewJames Cameron’s sequel looks so glorious all the time that you can’t tear your eyes away from it despite the lengthy runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes.Sowmya RajendranA family man must defend his loved ones against a powerful enemy. They take refuge among friends and establish new bonds; the hormonal teenagers hit on each other, the younger ones explore the new place with excitement, and the kids occasionally rebel against the adults. But the enemy is relentless and soon, the family must come together to confront him. This could be the plot of just about any movie. It’s not particularly original, and Hollywood has mounted thinly plotted, lavish productions on the ‘families stick together’ trope way too often. But in James Cameron’s hands, this familiar old wine transforms into a jaw-dropping, exhilarating cinematic experience. The first film in the franchise was released back in 2009 and yet,...

It is impossible to talk about “Avatar: The Way of Water” without sounding hyperbolic. But James Cameron’s sequel is a truly dazzling cinematic experience that will have you floating on a blockbuster high.
No matter if you’ve spent a second of your life in the past 13 years thinking about what’s happening on Pandora or how Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are getting on, assuming you remember their characters’ names. “The Way of Water” will make awe-struck believers out of even “Avatar” agnostics like me, at least for three hours and 12 minutes. The film isn’t just visually compelling, either, it’s spiritually rich as well — a simple but penetrating story about family and the natural world that is galaxies better than the first.
About that run time: Three hours and 12 minutes sounds excessive, but there is something decidedly decadent about really committing that much...
