Bengaluru, Aug 14 (Ians) The Up Warriorz were one of the most watchable teams at the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League, earlier in March 2023, in Mumbai. While they finished third in the tournament, the preparations for Season 2 are well and truly on track, with the Indian players and coaching staff undergoing an intense week-long camp, here.

Along with them, it was the Indian contingent from the Up Warriorz squad who were present for the camp.
Once the camp concluded, head coach Jon Lewis touched upon the week gone by, saying, “So the off-season camp has gone really well. The players have all really bought into what we’ve been asking them to do.

New Delhi, Aug 8 (Ians) Former captain Nasser Hussain was impressed with how England’s women’s side fought back to draw the recent Ashes series against Australia, but he knows they must continue to evolve if they want to close the gap even further on the reigning Icc Women’s Cricket World Cup champions.
England showed their class by winning both the Odi and T20I components of the multi-format Ashes on home soil last month and defeat in the one-off Test in June meant the topsy-turvy series ended tied at eight points apiece as Australia retained the trophy for a fifth straight series.
There were plenty of positive signs for Heather Knight’s side and Hussain has challenged England to build on that performance and continue to improve ahead of the next Ashes series in Australia at the start of 2025.

London, July 9 (Ians) England beat Australia by five wickets via Dls method in a rain-affected third and final T20I to win the series 2-1 at Lord’s and keep their slim hopes of winning the multi-format Women’s Ashes 2023 alive, here on late Saturday night.
Teenager Alice Capsey (46 off 24) combined with vice-captain Natalie Sciver-Brunt (25 off 25) to steer England to a revised target of 119 off 14 overs with four balls to spare and with five wickets in hand in front of yet another record-breaking crowd in London.
Late wickets helped Australia push England’s chase into the final over; with just two runs to defend, Jess Jonassen trapped Heather Knight lbw first ball, but Dani Gibson iced victory next delivery with a reserve sweep for four.
With this, England inflicted World Champions Australia’s first bilateral series defeat in the format since 2017.

New Delhi, March 30 (Ians) Charlotte Edwards, the head coach of the victorious Mumbai Indians team in the inaugural Womens Premier League (Wpl), said tearaway pacer Issy Wong’s hat-trick in the eliminator against the Up Warriorz was a proof that the England youngster is made to perform for the big stage.
Thanks to Issy’s efforts, Mumbai reached the final of the competition at the Brabourne Stadium. In the final, three more wickets from Issy, along with bowlers and Nat Sciver-Brunt coming good with the bat meant Mumbai defeated Delhi Capitals to lift the trophy.
“That’s why we signed her. I knew she was totally capable of doing that. I’d watched her play in the little amount she has for England, but also in regional cricket, and if there’s anyone that was made for that occasion, it was Issy Wong.

Mumbai, March 25 (Ians) Catches win matches, goes the saying in cricket and when a team spills a chance offered by a key batter in crucial knockout matches, it suffers something that the Up Warriors had to endure against Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (Wpl) 2023 Eliminator here.
Up Warriorz’s English player Sophie Ecclestone dropped a skier as Mumbai Indians’ Nat Sciver-Brunt miscued a shot off Rajeshwari Gayakwad when the batter was on six. There were also a few more half-chances and dropped chances that didn’t go Up’s away as they lost to Mumbai Indians by six wickets and crashed out of the competition.
Handed an early reprieve, England’s Sciver-Brunt went on to slam an unbeaten 72 off 38 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes, that helped Mumbai Indians to a massive 182/4 in 20 overs in the crucial knockout match. Spinner Issy Wong claimed a hat-trick during...

Sophie Ecclestone, who bagged two wickets (2/39), was the most successful bowler for Up Warriorz.

Mumbai, March 18 (Ians) After handing Mumbai Indians their first loss in the Women’s Premier League (Wpl), Up Warriorz all-rounder Deepti Sharma, revealed that did not imagine that she would get an opportunity to bat after restricting Mumbai Indians to 127.
After claiming a couple of wickets, Deepti scored a crucial 13 runs to build an all-important 24-run unbeaten partnership with Sophie Ecclestone to take her side to a 5-wicket win over Mi and was adjudged the player of the match.
“Bowling was done, and fielding was also good. Whenever it comes to my batting, I have to make sure that I have to build partnerships and win for the team. Honestly, I was not thinking that my batting will come because, with the scores on the board, I thought our top order batters will finish it off, so I did not think much about my batting,” Deepti said in a post-match press conference.

Mumbai, March 15 (Ians) The Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) have not won any game in the ongoing Wpl 2023 so far but Up Warriorz coach Jon Lewis feels that the Smriti Mandhana led franchise have improved in the last couple of games and his team needs to take them very seriously and prepare well.
Kitted in a yellow jersey, the Warriorz have pushed the likes of the Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians to the hilt, while swatting aside the challenges from Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore with relative ease in the ongoing season of Wpl.
After losing to Mumbai Indians in their last game, Up will now face a winless Rcb on Wednesday evening at the Dy Patil Stadium.

Mumbai, March 11 (Ians) After thrashing Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) thanks to a magnificent knock by captain Alyssa Healy, Up Warriorz are on a high and hoping to continue with the momentum in their next match of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (Wpl).
But they have a tough task on hand as they now face the rampant Mumbai Indians Women, who are unbeaten with three wins.
Placed third with four points from three matches, the Up Warriorz will be eyeing their second successive win when they take on high-flyers Mumbai Indians in a highly-anticipated clash at the iconic Brabourne Stadium on Sunday.

Mumbai, March 10 (Ians) After a thumping 10-wicket win over Rcb in Wpl 2023, Up Warriorz skipper Alyssa Healy on Friday credited bowlers especially spinners for their success, saying that they held their nerve and took wickets at crucial times. Excellent outings from spinners Sophie Ecclestone (4/13) and Deepti Sharma (3/26) helped Up Warriorz bowl out Rcb for 138 despite a fighting half-century (52 off 39) by Ellyse Perry in a Wpl 2023 match. After Perry, Sophie Devine (36 off 24) was next top-scorer for Rcb as other batters struggled to get going against a disciplined Up bowling attack.
In reply, Healy (96 not out) smashed Rcb bowlers all-round the park to score a quickfire fifty and she got perfect support from her opening partner Devika Vaidya Devika Vaidya (36 not out off 31).
None of the Rcb bowlers looked effective as Healy and Devika stitched an unbeaten and attacking opening partnership of 139 runs as Up Warriorz chased down the target in just 13 overs.

Mumbai, March 9 (Ians) Alyssa Healy led Up Warriorz will look to register their second win in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League as they face Royal Challengers Bangalore at the iconic Brabourne Stadium, here on Friday.
The Up Warriorz began their campaign at the Wpl 2023 with a bang, as Grace Harris’ incredible power-hitting helped them clinch a sensational 3-wicket win against the Gujarat Giants at the Dy Patil Stadium.
In their opener, the Warriorz were in a spot of bother with the Giants bowling picking important wickets, however, a solid counter-attack from Kiran Navgire, Harris and Sophie Ecclestone provided the team with right amount of impetus in the home stretch, as they ran out comfortable winners on the night.
Right after, Healy and co were up against the Delhi Capitals at the Dy Patil Stadium. And while the result did not turn out in the Warriorz’s favour,...

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Up Warriorz on Wednesday drafted in uncapped Indian batter Shivali Shinde for rest of their campaign in the inaugural edition of Womens Premier League (Wpl) as a replacement for wicketkeeper-batter Laxmi Yadav, who sustained an injury during training.
Laxmi, hailing from Ghaziabad, was bought by the side at a base price of Inr 10 lakhs.
“Unfortunately, I had to return home with an injury. Obviously it is not ideal because we have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and when the opportunity came, I got injured. But we should not lose hope due to injury.”
All the time I spent with the team in the camp was memorable. Everyone was very positive. The environment was very uplifting. It did not feel like this was my first tournament of this magnitude and there was no nervousness either. I was enjoying every moment. I learnt a lot...

Navi Mumbai, March 7 (Ians) Tahlia McGrath’s brilliant fighting knock (90 not out off 50) went in vain as an attacking fifty by captain Meg Lanning (70 off 42) and all-round show by Jess Jonassen (42 not out and 3-43) led Delhi Capitals to a convincing 42-run win over Up Warriorz in a Women’s Premier League 2023 (Wpl) match at the Dr Dy Patil Sports Academy, here on Tuesday.

Mumbai, March 6 (Ians) Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha was left impressed with Grace Harris’ power-packed batting in giving Up Warriorz a thrilling win over Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League (Wpl), saying there was grace in the Australian batter’s performance at Dy Patil Stadium.
Chasing 170, the Warriorz were struggling at 105/7 in the 16th over. However, Grace notched up a brilliant 26-ball 59 not out, hitting seven fours and three sixes, to register their first win, and the tournament’s first successful chase.
Grace was ably supported by India batter Kiran Navgire who scored 53 off 43 balls, including five fours and two sixes and England’s left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone who remained unbeaten, with a quickfire 22 off 12 balls.

New Delhi, Feb 26 (Ians) Women’s cricket in India has made huge strides ever since its breakout moment came as being runners-up in the 2017 Odi World Cup in England. Since then, India won Asia Cup, became runners-up of 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup, were semi-finalists in 2018 and 2023 Women’s T20 World Cups and also bagged maiden U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Trophy earlier in the year.
The question now arises is, what more needs to be done to further the development of women’s cricket in the country? The inaugural edition of Women’s Premier League (Wpl) is starting from March 4 and it promises to be another watershed moment in upping the growth of women’s cricket in the country.

Cape Town, Feb 24 (Ians) South Africa edged England in a thrilling semifinal to reach their first-ever Icc Womens T20 World Cup final with a six-run win here on Friday.
Tazmin Brits’s 68 set South Africa up for a commanding total of 164 for four, as she combined for a 96-run opening stand with Laura Wolvaardt, with no bowler safe from an onslaught.
England looked to respond in the same vein, racing to 50 runs before wickets regularly halted their progress, Brits taking four catches in the performance of a lifetime.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight tried to steer England home, but they could not deny South Africa a place in the showpiece on home soil.
Brits and Wolvaardt showed none of the nerves on display against Bangladesh just three days ago as they set the tone for a run-fest. The duo started patiently, but flicked the switch for Charlie Dean’s first over,...

New Delhi, Feb 22 (Ians) Up Warriorz on Wednesday named the talismanic Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy as their captain ahead of the inaugural season of the Womens Premier League (Wpl), to be held from March 4-26 in Mumbai.

Cape Town, Feb 21 (Ians) England smashed the highest score in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup and won by the biggest margin ever seen at the tournament, hammering Pakistan by 114 runs, here on Tuesday.
The England batters warmed up for the knockout stages with a thrilling display, smashing Pakistan’s attack to all corners of Newlands as they reached 213/5 in their 20 overs, reports Icc.
And the reply never really got going as Pakistan ended their tournament in disappointing fashion, managing to avoid being bowled out, but finishing on 99/9.
England had rung a change to their playing XI, leaving out Lauren Bell for Freya Davies to set up a possible showdown between Davies and under-pressure Katherine Sciver-Brunt for semi-final selection.
But it was the veteran Sciver-Brunt who impressed of the two, striking with just her second ball to remove opener Sadaf Shamas for a duck, and finishing with...

Cape Town (South Africa), Feb 20 (Ians) England may have secured qualification for the Icc Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 semi-finals but wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones says her side is still searching for a ‘complete performance’ as they prepare to conclude their group stage against Pakistan.
An 11-run victory against India at St George’s Park on Saturday made it three wins from three and England are now looking to seal the top spot with a victory over a Pakistan side whose slim qualification hopes rest on a win here and an Ireland victory over India.
Jones struck 40 from 27 deliveries against India and believes the squad are embracing head coach Jon Lewis’ aggressive batting blueprint.
“We’ve had three good games, but we keep saying we’re still searching for the complete performance. In terms of how we’ve gone about those three games, I think it’s been brilliant,” said Jones.
