Come se dice “Beetlejuice” in Italiano?
The first of the major fall festivals has announced its opening night film, and, perhaps a bit surprising, the Venice International Film Festival will kick off with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton’s “next generation” sequel to his 1988 classic.
The out-of-competition screening will serve as the movie’s world premiere.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” brings back Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Michael Keaton as the titular undead prankster, two-time Oscar nominee Winona Ryder as the gloomy gal who summons him into our realm, and Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara as her artsy mother upset about moving to the sticks. Jenna Ortega, a Burton-world alum after the hit series “Wednesday,” is new to the franchise as Ryder’s daughter, plus Justin Theroux (playing Ryder’s husband), Willem Dafoe, Monica Belluci, and Burn Gorman. Not returning are Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’s characters or Jeffrey Jones as Ryder’s dad,...

In a decision that has ignited fierce debates, Louisiana has enacted a new law that requires public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments. This law has sparked legal discourse and drawn both support and criticism from political figures.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a former Louisiana state legislator, has voiced his approval of the law. “The intent behind it is that they’re trying to acknowledge our history and tradition in the country,” he said. “The Ten Commandments have a huge impact, and they’re very important in the development of our — well, of all of Western civilization, but certainly of our country.”
The controversial law, signed by Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R), requires every public school classroom in the state to display the Ten Commandments on easily readable posters, set to begin in 2025. The posters must also include three paragraphs that highlight the religious text’s influential role in American history.

Ahead of the first presidential debate, Donald Trump is taking a leaf out of his Election Day playbook and attempting to preemptively discredit a strong performance by President Joe Biden. The former president and his allies have spent the days leading up to the rematch between the 2020 rivals accusing Biden of everything from doping, to secretly using an earpiece, to the unsportsmanlike use of Mountain Dew.
There is no evidence that Biden receives performance enhancing drugs ahead of major public appearances, but Trump’s allies have picked up on the thread regardless.

Right-wing Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) is set to force a vote in the House of Representatives to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in “inherent contempt,” which could result in the House Sargent at Arms arresting him.
Luna is upset that the Department of Justice has not acted on the House holding Garland in criminal contempt earlier this month for refusing to turn over audio of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur about his handling of classified documents, which Republicans subpoenaed.
The DOJ immediately announced that it would not act on the prosecution recommendation.
Luna wants to use an obscure House procedure that could see Garland arrested.
On the morning of June 24, she sent a letter to her colleagues, stating she would call up her inherent contempt resolution “in the next few days.”

“I’ve lost track of all time, hours, days,” says Mehdi Hasan, explaining it has been “a manic six weeks.”
The former MSNBC host launched his own media company, Zeteo, on April 15, and things are hectic — in a good way. After Hasan raised $4 million in seed money, Zeteo generated more than 20,000 paid subscribers in its first two weeks. While a standard subscription costs $8 per month, or $72 per year, many subscribers have paid a whole lot more.

Republicans are up in arms about students demonstrating against the war in Gaza on university campuses across the nation. The epicenter for the now weekslong protest movement is Columbia University, where on Tuesday students occupied Hamilton Hall before the NYPD forcibly removed and arrested them. J.D. Vance, the Donald Trump-loving Republican senator from Ohio, on Wednesday night told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the students who took control of the campus building should face legal consequences.

New York — Linnea Norton spent Sunday at Columbia University jamming on the guitar with other students — a drummer and a cohort of harmonizing singers. They played Appalachian folk music and protest songs by Bob Dylan and John Lennon. The encampment smelled like sunscreen, and students kicked a soccer ball after a teach-in about imperialism. Some had brought their young children.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) blamed congressional Republicans for squandering their leverage to tackle the border crisis.
DeSantis stated that House Republicans “surrendered” their power to address the ongoing crisis happening at the U.S.-Mexico border after the chamber had passed a foreign aid package distributed billions of dollars to American allies.
The Florida governor accused the party of handing President Joe Biden the foreign aid funds he requested while gaining nothing in exchange for securing the border.
“They basically just surrendered on the border,” he told reporters. “They now have no leverage to do anything on the border. They had an opportunity to insist that Biden accept the border if he wanted all the foreign aid, and they decided to capitulate.”
“And so he got everything he wants, and Republicans voters did not get anything with respect to stopping this problem at the southern border. Look, we’re...

Donald Trump doubled down on his assertions that student protests against Israel’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza are exponentially worse than the deadly 2017 neo-Nazi rallies held in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In statements given to reporters gathered at Manhattan criminal court — where he is currently standing trial — Trump said that if President Joe Biden “ran because of Charlottesville […] Charlottesville is peanuts compared to what you’re looking at now,” the former president said, echoing a similar claim he made last week. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) lashed out at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia), stating that she is “bringing down brand of the Republican Party” and is placing the Republican Senate majority at risk.
“I think she’s uninformed,” Tillis stated in a clip played on CNN news anchor Erin Burnett.
“She is a total waste of time,” he added. “She is a horrible leader. She is dragging our brand down. She – not the Democrats – are the biggest risks to us getting back to a majority.”
The North Carolina senator’s comments came after Greene criticized the GOP’s move to pass a $95 billion foreign aid bill.
This bill, passed by the Senate on April 23 and signed by President Joe Biden the next day, includes aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and provisions that might lead to a national ban on TikTok.

GOP Left With Tiny One-Seat House Majority As Chaos Grows In Party After Rep. Mike Gallagher Resigns

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin) plans to leave the House of Representatives as early as next month. With Gallagher’s departure planned for April 19, House Speaker Mike Johnson will be left with just a one-vote majority.
Gallagher’s exit date will mean there is no special election before November, so Wisconsin law states the seat must remain empty. Earlier in the year, Gallagher stated he would not seek reelection. Part of his decision is due to the backlash he received for not voting to impeach Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
A shift in the House’s balance may pose a risk for Johnson. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust Johnson, citing that Johnson “betrayed [their] conference” by breaking their rules of order and working with Democrats. It is unclear when the motion will come to a vote. No Republicans have publicly supported Greene’s notion as of yet.

On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.
“We were promised regular order,” she stated. “That...

Updated: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) filed a motion Friday that could lead to a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson, less than a half year into his tenure.
Greene’s action came just as the House passed a $1.2 trillion package to fund the government through September and forestall a shutdown. The bill only would have passed with Democratic votes, with a majority of Republicans against it.
“Ok, deep breath America, here we go again,” CNN anchor Dana Bash told viewers after Manu Raju and other reporters interviewed Greene on the steps of the Capitol afterward.
No vote on Greene’s motion to vacate is scheduled, as she did not seek a “privileged” resolution that would have triggered a two-legislative day timeframe for a floor vote. That is what happened in October, when Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl) led a successful effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. What...

Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson, plunging Republicans into a state of uncertainty ahead of Friday night’s government funding deadline.
Greene and other far-right Republicans have been livid over Speaker Johnson agreeing to a bipartisan bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown. “No Republican in the House of Representatives in good conscience can vote for this bill,” the Georgia representative railed on the House floor. “It is a complete departure from all of our principles. … This is not a Republican bill. When the National Press Club hosted a post-screening panel on the upcoming movie Anna, about Russian journalist and Vladimir Putin critic Anna Politkovskaya, the conversation — to not much of a surprise — led to Donald Trump and what his potential return to the White House would mean for democracy.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-ca) and former CIA director John Brennan joined journalist Bob Woodward for the post-screening event Wednesday evening, and each chimed in on the potential impact of another Trump presidency.
Woodward, who released 20 audio interviews with Trump as part of The Trump Tapes in 2022, said, “I think an important question about Trump is, ‘Who is he?'”
“In the course of these interviews I asked him, ‘What’s the job of the president?’ And he said, ‘To protect the people.’ Now that’s a good answer. He did not protect the people [in the Covid crisis]. And if you get into this — I think...

John Oliver had a good laugh at the Republican party once again on Sunday night, this time because of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s choice in location for this year’s GOP retreat. According to the HBO host, the place “looks like the Wes Anderson Remake of ‘The Shining.”
The retreat will be sparsely attended this year, with Axios reporting that less than 100 members will be in attendance. And, the reasons for their missing it simply tickled Oliver. One member was so blunt as to say “I’d rather sit down with Hannibal Lecter and eat my own liver.”
Another claimed that he had already bought the materials to clean his boat and simply needed to do it that weekend.
“We all know how important it is to use boat cleaner before it expires,” Oliver quipped.
But a key piece of this reluctance seems to be because it’s usually held in Florida,...

Colorado Rep. Ken Buck is abruptly leaving Congress, calling the institution a “dysfunctional” mess that has “devolved into this bickering and nonsense and not really doing the job for the American people.”
Buck issued a statement through his office on Tuesday announcing that he will “depart Congress at the end of next week,” nearly eight months before his term is scheduled to end and just a few months after announcing he would not seek reelection in 2024. His departure narrows the already slim Republican majority in the House to just five seats: 218 to 213 with three vacancies,...

House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to say whether embryos are “children” when repeatedly pressed in a new interview.
In the interview with CBS News, Johnson stated, “If you do believe that life begins at conception, it’s a really important question to wrestle with.”
When asked if the destruction of an embryo constitutes a “murder,” Johnson’s response was vague. In the past, Johnson has held strong opinions on abortion rights and the belief that life begins at conception.
Johnson said that in vitro fertilization is an issue that “policymakers have to determine how to handle.”
He revealed that he believes that IVF policy should not be left up to Congress but rather it should be the state’s responsibility to decide.

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off the March 9 episode mocking President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address — but more so, the Republican response. After Mikey Day’s Biden spoke to Congress and mocked House Speaker Mike Johnson shaking his head — “every time I say predecessor, Mike Johnson shakes his head like he just accidentally caught 30 seconds of the show ‘Euphoria'” — he threw it to Katie Britt, the Alabama senator.
With that, Scarlett Johansson appeared as Britt, stating, “Tonight I’ll be auditioning for the part of ‘Scary Mom.’ I’ll be performing an original monologue called ‘This Country is Hell.’”
Continuing to mock Britt’s speech, which was intensely criticized online, she went on to explain how she’s “not just a senator.”
