At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”

The idea that following your dream will lead to a happier and healthier life isn't just fluff. Research has found that people who pursue their passion experience lower stress levels and are happier overall. That's good news for Dominican comedian and actress Sasha Merci Medina, who has been living her life based on this principle ever since she decided to take her first stab at comedy.
Medina, 33 who was born and raised in the Bronx, started performing in 2016 at open mics and standup shows. But she really started making a name for herself when she began posting comedy clips to her Instagram account, @sashamerci, after the social media platform added the video feature.
Shortly after building a decent following, Medina started landing everything from standup gigs to bona-fide acting roles, including one in 2016's "Honorable Mike" and in the 2019 indie film "De Lo Mio." In "De Lo Mio," she played...

Exclusive: Broken English has optioned an original screenplay by Erick Galindo and Patty Rodriguez for the holiday ensemble film A Christmas to Remember.
The film tells the story of Rose Klug, who has turned White Elephant into a war of attrition, one where bringing the best or most creative gift is more important than Christmas itself. The battles have become legendary among locals on the powdery slopes of Big Bear where the former hedge fund manager has called home for decades (she called it quits to manage a growing ulcer problem).
Rose feels like she’s from a different era: she drinks whiskey straight, she doesn’t say much yet commands attention, and she never takes two steps when one will do. Her family gift exchange is the one time of year she allows herself to go wild. But this Christmas, something threatens to upstage Rose’s epic game of...

If there’s been one constant about Latino representation in Hollywood, it’s been the abysmal representation that has barely shifted in decades.
Despite some gains in recent years, a 2019 study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed that underrepresentation and stereotypical roles for U.S.-based Latinx talent are, sadly, still the norm.
Enter Broken English Prods., a fledgling Latinx production company, which hopes to “change the narrative,” in the words of its CEO Christopher Acebo. The new shingle joins Lionsgate’s Pantelion and other companies in addressing the paucity of Latinx films.
Broken English forms part of new entertainment finance company Grandave Capital (Gc), launched by film financier Stanley Preschutti in June, which has boarded projects as a third-party equity investor but has also plowed considerable funding to its new Latinx production arm.

“The Good Doctor” actor Nicholas Gonzalez says Latinx representation in media is often stereotyped, and even when it isn’t, the characters are only temporary.
“I was thankful to be … doing a very positive portrayal of a high-achieving cardiothoracic surgeon who happened to be Latino, which I think was a very good representation of the heights we can ascend to, those kinds of roles we’re talking about having, and they killed him,” the actor said during SAG-AFTRA’s Race & Storytelling: Through the Latino Lens virtual panel on Tuesday. “We don’t last.”
Moderated by “Good Day LA” anchor Amanda Salas, panelists also included actors Dan Bucatinsky and Nicholas Gonzalez, casting director Carla Hool, Broken English Productions president Jolene Rodriguez and “One Day at a Time” showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett.
Latinx roles make up 3-5% of the lead parts in Hollywood despite making up around 17% of the overall United States population.
