Animayo Gran Canaria’s top two winners this year, one from Iran, another Central American, touch on the same theme that is encapsulated in what a character says in Guatemalan Pablo León’s 2D animated short, “Remember Us,” winner of the festival’s best short film of Spanish-Speaking Nationality – Animation with Ñ.
“You fight your wars twice, first in the battlefield, then in your memory,” says the journalist in “Remember Us” who chronicles three stories of the civil war that tore El Salvador apart for 12 years.
“In the Shadow of the Cypress,” winner of Animayo’s Best International Short Film prize, centers on a war veteran struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd) who takes out his pent-up rage on his daughter until something unexpected washes up on the beach before their house.

Longtime collaborators Myke Towers and Bad Bunny have teamed up for a powerhouse track called “Adivino” — and fans already have theories that Bad Bunny’s verse is about Kendall Jenner.
The song marks a new era for Towers, who released his albums La Vida Es Una and Lveu: Vive La Tuya… No La Mia last year. He started teasing the song earlier this week on Instagram, hyping fans up for his latest team-up with Bad Bunny. (In addition to appearing on a bunch of remixes, the guys previously worked on...

Wisin & Yandel’s first album, Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, came out in 2000. For millennial hip-hop heads, that was the year Outkast’s Stankonia and Ghostface Killah’s Supreme Clientele dropped. For rock fans, that’d be the year Radiohead released Kid A. And for zoomers, well, that was three years before Olivia Rodrigo was even born.
All of that is a long-winded way of saying Wisin has been around for a minute now. But if his new album, Mr. W, is any indication, he’s an O.G. who...

Coachella 2024 was the year of the A-list guests. Across all three days, top stars made appearances either onstage or in the crowd to support their musician besties. Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt, Will Smith pulled up for J Balvin, Justin Bieber sang with Tems, Billie Eilish threw a last-minute party at the DoLab stage, and Shakira even announced a world tour during Bizarrap’s set.
The talk among some festivalgoers ahead of Coachella suggested that this year’s lineup might underwhelm, but the number of stars joining their friends onstage surely helped with that.

The Latin Grammy-winning Colombian artist J Balvin parked a ginormous inflatable spaceship on Coachella’s main stage Sunday night, kicking off an epic reggaeton rave under the stars.
Balvin opened the festivities with his 2017 moombahton smash, “Mi Gente,” the same song he performed with Beyoncé during her historic Homecoming show — and his Coachella debut. Six years later, Balvin’s catalog has been expanded and blended creatively with different genres, as has reggaeton’s sound. Since 2022, Shakira’s personal life has publicly unfolded like an engrossing telenovela that just won’t resolve. The saga began in June of that year, when the Grammy-winning Colombian superstar announced the end of her 11-year romance with the Catalan soccer player, and father of her two children, Gerard Piqué. Despite taking a civil tone in a press release issued that summer, she came firing back in 2023 with a tabloid-ready diss track, detailing their breakup (and Piqué’s infidelity) in excruciating detail: the electro-pop atomic bomb “Bzrp Music Sessions #53,”recorded...

The boys are living their Godfather fantasy.
On Thursday, J Balvin released his new single “Triple S” featuring Jowell & Randy, and De La Ghetto, along with its Corleone family-esque video, which sees the four men showing up to a blood-filled mansion as mafiosos.
As they drop bars about a woman who’s “single, strong, and not to be messed with,” the four men walk through a large home in preparation for a dinner, in which guests end up falling like flies after taking sips of their drinks and bites of their food.

What he did have was nearly hundreds of successful trap hits and a following he had named “La Nueva Religión,” which would go on to make him the most listened to...

Data was named one of the best albums of 2023 — but the brilliant compendium of futuristic, boundary-pushing songs took a massive amount of work from super-producer Tainy. The Puerto Rican innovator started masterminding the LP about three years ago, pouring his most avant-garde ideas and interests into the project. He finally ended up with an intricate maze of electronic, reggaeton, and ambient sounds that crisscross multiple styles and eras, all while yanking major acts like Bad Bunny, Four Tet, Feid, and Julieta Venegas into the album’s unexpected orbit.

Last year at the Grammys, Bad Bunny’s LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language project nominated for Album of the Year, and his song “Moscow Mule” got a nod under Best Pop Solo Performance. Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
The academy has a tough decision that ultimately comes down to Karol G’s history-making accomplishments or Tainy’s sprawling production genius. Both artists are familiar to Grammy voters: Karol cinched her first nomination in 2022, for her album KG0516, while Tainy won last year thanks to his credits on the Bad Bunny blockbuster Un Verano Sin Ti.

Have we suddenly been transported back to the 2000s? Looking at the state of reggaetón right now, it might seem that way. From Baby Rasta Y Gringo recently releasing a masterclass in the genre, Chencho linking up with Wisin for the banger "Loco X Perrearte," and Tainy making his teachers proud by continuing to push the limits of perreo, there is plenty of new reggaetón for fans to be excited about. Now, Luny Tunes are back with "Sandunga," a brand new single that dropped on Nov. 2 and reaches deep into their bag of beats to remind you just how big of a role they played in making reggaetón what it is today. And acho man, it's heavy.

Recently, the masterminds behind reggaeton's biggest stars and hitmakers have been coming into their own as artists. Last year, music producer Dímelo Flow released his debut album, "Always Dream." In June, producer Tainy also dropped his debut album, "Data." And now, Sky Rompiendo (real name Alejandro Ramírez Suárez) - one of the most in-demand Latin music producers of the past decade and the genius behind artists like J Balvin, Karol G, Maluma, and Feid - is shifting his focus from working behind the scenes to creating his own record. It's a move that has been long in the making, but for Rompiendo, the timing has been everything.
"I was inspired by all these producers like Pharrell, Timbaland, and Scott Storch - that whole movement of them eventually putting their faces up front and being more present in the scene versus not just always being behind the scenes," Rompiendo tells Popsugar.

By now, the beats of an aspiring-musician saga are as familiar as those of a fairy tale. There’s the hungry young artist who seems marked for stardom long before the rest of the world has caught on. There’s the crappy starter apartment, and the glitzy industry parties, and the boardroom meetings with labels who don’t quite get it. There’s the moment when the hero hears his own song on the radio, and the moment when he caves to the temptations of fame, and the moment he’s made to decide to be true to himself.
Sometimes, in the darker iterations of this story, there’s also the spectacular crash after the meteoric rise; in the more thoughtful or incisive versions, there might be conversations about the limitations of his art or the compromises it demands or its impact on the world. But Neon is not that tale.

A reggaeton star is about to be born. On Thursday, Netflix will premiere Neon, a comedy show that follows rising reggaetón star Santi, played by Tyler Dean Flores, as he moves to Miami to pursue his music dreams after his song “Exagerao” goes viral online. Ahead of the scripted show’s premiere, Rolling Stone exclusively premieres the music video for the song that catapults Santi.

Are you ready for your next TV obsession?
Neon, Netflix's highly-anticipated reggaeton comedy-drama, premieres Thursday, October 19, 2023.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at a clip from one of the freshman season's most pivotal episodes.
In the clip, we see Isa, an A-list Latin pop star who gathers her friends for a trip to her exclusive tropical island getaway.
In perhaps a nod to the rich and famous, our three leads get out of their car to escape to the private jet for a luxury holiday.
They have a pre-conceived expectation of what's about to go down, but the truth is, they couldn't be more wrong.
Isa, played by the Umbrella Academy's Genesis Rodriguez, tells them this isn't like the getaways other celebrities can give them.
How?
We're not giving it all away here because we want you to be at least a little surprised when you watch the TV clip below.

Bad Bunny’s new album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana just dropped, and people have been poring over all the revelations on the LP. One particular line took fans by surprise: On “Thunder Y Lightning,” a hard-hitting track with Eladio Carrion, the Puerto Rican star seems to take aim at the Colombian artist J Balvin. He raps, “Ustedes me han visto con los mismo mientras ustedes son amigo de todo el mundo como Balvin.” (“You guys have seen me with the same people while you all are...

Bad Bunny loves to keep people guessing, and he wanted fans to stay on their toes before he dropped his latest album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana. This summer, he told Rolling Stone he likely wouldn’t release more music until 2024. Then his team hinted that maybe a whole LP was coming. He denied that in an interview. Then he launched a WhatsApp channel where he reminded people that he never confirmed an album. But then he said he also didn’t not confirm an album.

Young Miko, J Balvin, and Jowell y Randy are showing their colmillos, or fangs, on their long-awaited collaboration with Tainy. On Wednesday, the five artists teamed up and released an Edm-backed, perreo mega-collab, along with its cinematic video.
The video, directed by Pau Carreté, opens with a seeming attempted robbery before cutting to close-ups of Young Miko singing the opening lyrics of the song. The scenes flash between the star, a dancing robot, and a kitten. Balvin then comes in as images of New York City flash onscreen. He raps...

"He's not a one hit wonder. He's the real deal." That's what they all say! Netflix has unveiled the full trailer for the series Neon set in music scene in Miami. From exec producer Daddy Yankee, with original songs produced by Tainy, Neon is a new series about three friends' quest to find fame in the world of reggaeton. Or at least play one paying gig. While this isn't the first film or TV show with reggaeton, definitely one of the first to focus specifically on this scene and this music. Three friends move from a small town in Florida with the hope of making it big. This stars Tyler Dean Flores as Santi, Emma Ferreira as Ness, Jordan Mendoza as Felix, Courtney Taylor as Mia, along with Michelle Cortés, Jessie Camacho, Ana Sofia Pomales, and Cecille Colón. The eight-episode comedy captures not only the three besties' larger-than-life dreams, but...

The hustle isn’t easy, but three friends are committed to doing it together in Netflix’s new Daddy Yankee-produced series, Neon.
The streamer released the trailer for the upcoming music comedy on Tuesday, which is set to feature a number of cameo appearances including Brray, Jon Z, Lyanno, Jowell, Ken-y, Jota Rosa, Villano Antillano and Daddy Yankee.
The series follows Tyler Dean Flores as Santi, a rising reggaeton artist who, alongside some old friends — Ness (Emma Ferreira) and Felix (Jordan Mendoza) — from small town Florida, and a brand new one, A&r rep Mia (Courtney Taylor), attempts to leave his mark on the Miami music scene.
The eight-episode comedy is a look at the hilarious and sometimes even harrowing realities of trying to make your dreams come true — whether it’s being the biggest star in reggaeton, a music manager, or a music video director — in the music industry.

Bad Bunny released the music video for reggaetón single “Un Preview” on Monday, which sees the superstar falling for a “vaquera.”
Bad Bunny sings of no longer being afraid of love, despite his love interest being a “peligro,” and getting up close and personal on the dance floor. The visual is produced by Tainy and La Paciencia, and directed by Stillz, his go-to collaborator behind several projects including “Moscow Mule” — which sees Bad Bunny transform into a seafaring merman — and “Where She Goes.”

Since breaking through with songs like “Otro Trago” and “Solita” back in 2019, Sech has been one of the Latin industry’s most reliable hitmakers. His smooth, syrupy voice has made him a streaming titan and a go-to collaborator for artists like Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam, and more.
But after back-to-back albums — his excellent debut Sueños in 2019, his upbeat follow-up 1 of 1 in 2020, and his empowered third LP 42 in 2021 — the Panamanian star took some time to recalibrate. The child of pastors who’d honed his skills singing in a church choir, Sech...

J Balvin has been laying low since releasing his album Jose back in 2021. Sure, there were some big collabs with Trueno and Ed Sheeran, but fans have been waiting to see what else the Colombian star has in store. Now he’s back in full force — and he’s enlisted Usher and DJ Khaled to make a splash.
His new song “Dientes” is a brash, relentlessly catchy mix of genres that interpolates Usher’s 2004 mega-hit “Yeah” with bold, completely unpredictable sounds. Some of that is because of the masterminds behind...

Rising reggaetón star Rmand is used to doing everything on his own. Back in the Dominican Republic, he’d write his songs alone, record by himself, and book shows independently. But now, Rmand (pronounced awr-mand) has an army, led by Tainy and Lex Borrero’s NEON16 label, “looking to elevate” everything he does.
In 2021, he released the track “Diskreto,” which went viral on TikTok. Rmand’s career quickly launched to high gear after he competed on Netflix’s La Firma earlier this year. The show, judged by Nicki Nicole and Rauw Alejandro,...
