sappy plot saved by brilliant acting
19 December 2006
As far as the movie goes it's your basic sappy romantic movie, but I must say it was saved by the brilliant performance given by Casey Hoffman. Hoffman had a way of making his character come to life that was reminiscent of an old Humphrey Bogart film. Everything from the way he eats a bowl of cereal to the sly grin he wears while he's macking on the ladies works to shed light on an already complex character. When one gives Hoffman's performance the true attention it deserves, one realizes that every movement, every single facial tick, is working on the viewer, even on a subconscious level, to make sure that they understand the depths of Dustin. The other reviewer said he didn't expect any Oscar nods from this low budget piece, and if this is true then it only speaks to the stupidity and ignorance of today's academy. I look forward to seeing Hoffman's next film, I read a rumor in Variety about some picture he's in pre-production on with a working title of "The Rapture." I for one, cannot wait.
