Season 1, Episode 16
3/10
Absolutely terrible Monsters episode.
11 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Monsters: Their Divided Self starts late one night as psychiatrist Dr. Blackman (Rich Hall) arrives at the home of Robert (Keith MacKechnie) & James Self (David L. Lander) who are joined brother's, two heads on the same body if you will. Always fighting with each other & emotionally unstable Dr. Blackman feels he can help the brother's but also has his own agenda...

Episode sixteen from season one of Monsters this originally aired in the US during February 1989, directed by Frank De Palma this is probably the worst episode of Monsters I have seen so far. The script was by Michael Bishop based on his story 'Collaborating' & has a quirky offbeat plot about a two headed man who argues with himself a lot & the psychiatrist who tries to help them, with the right script Their Divided Self could have been quite good & even the title is fairly clever but the constant irritating arguing between Robert & James becomes very annoying, there's not much plot, it can't decide whether it's a comedy or serious horror or some socially relevant tale about modern society & how it shuns those who are different. Needless to say at only twenty odd minutes it's a mess of ideas that ends up going nowhere, not making any memorable point & ends up being pretty boring actually.

There isn't really a conventional monster in Their Divided Self, the two head Robert & James Self is obviously the two actors standing next to each with an over-sized shirt & jacket on. It doesn't impress & looks like exactly what it is, two blokes standing next to each other. The whole episode feels confused, it's set at night with a thunder storm raging outside a creepy mansion but that's as far as the horror element goes which is odd & there's some out of place comedy too as we get silly sound effects & the like, it's not scary, it's not funny & I can't see what it was trying to say. The two actor's who play Robert & James are also terrible & seriously annoying which doesn't help.

Their Divided Self has a neat little title & a potentially interesting plot but the makers completely dropped the ball & this is in the running for worst Monsters episode ever.
