Review of Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3 (2013)
4/10
A bit inspired but badly executed

Warning: Spoilers
Storyline : 1990; Iqbal Khan owns the Great Indian Circus in Chicago. He has a son Samar (Amir Khan) who is as passionate about the circus as his dad. However, the circus is going through bad times and Iqbal is unable to pay the bank's debt. The bank closes the circus and Iqbal commits suicide in front of the bank's CEO Mr. Andersen with Samar watching in horror.

Years later, Samar is seen whizzing past Chicago streets on his (transformer?) bike; but wait. He has just pillaged Mr. Andersen's bank. How? Keep Guessing.

He almost covers the entire length of Chicago but the cops can't even get a shot at him. Forget that, there is no way any footage of him is captured for a facial ID later. All this when he is seen jumping over their cars and is at close range. Are the cops retarded or what? Keep guessing. Enter the super cops from India, Jai Dixit and Ali. Both sporting cool shades somehow assures you that these are the best guys for the job. Really?

Should I mention the entry scene for both Jai and Ali? Its 20 mins of pure Chennai Express; or should I say Rohit Shetty ishtyle. You shouldn't miss it because if you liked Chennai Express this is going to be fun. Rest of the movie is about how they go about catching the bank thief with some twists on the way.

To be frank the movie could have been much better. Although, its inspired (only just a bit) from Prestige it fails to impress in the magic and the secret of the magician part. But considering the Dhoom franchise survives on slick bike chases its pardonable. However, this installment fails to deliver in that aspect as well. While making the circus sequences flashy and glamorous, the bike sequences are a let down. There are some pretty good stunts mind you, but looks like the movie gets caught between bike chases and CGI. Speed junkies like fast bikes not bikes that transform into Jet skis or bikes that tread a rope. The bike action sequences are not believable like they were in the earlier installments.

Acting wise, Amir does a good job and thats it. Abhishek manages the tough cop act along with Uday Chopra who tries to act funny. Oh! there's Katrina Kaif as well who does little other than hang around.

Script wise, there is a lot left to imagination and unanswered. How does a guy manage to shower the city with money when the only thing the audience sees is him running down the bank wall? Wonder whether its intentional. Hope not.

Bottomline: Watch and be disappointed. Its what Rocky V was to Rocky without being demeaning to both.
