Manor House (2002– )

Insightful and entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
The Edwardian Country House is must see viewing, and it would be worth having a televised reunion of the cast. I would have liked to have seen more of Reji Raj's role as a teacher to son Guy (who is now a London barrister).

One episode featured David Mellor, former Minister in the Thatcher- Major Conservative Government, who was a guest at a dinner at the mansion. Afterwards, the gentlemen retired to the lounge for port, and engaged in discussions about 19th century politics. I would have liked to have known what the females talked about away from the males.

One thing that surprised me was the ending. At the end Dr Avril Anson ("Miss Anson" in the series) drives off in a red sports car, but it turns out she never owned the car and had use of it for about 30 minutes. Afterwards, Dr Anson returned dressed in modern clothes to give a heartfelt thanks to the downstairs staff. Also, Dr Anson's close relationship with her sister Anna Olliff-Cooper was strained through the series, noting:

"It was my brother-in-law (John Olliff-Cooper) and my sister's view that I was a woman, I was unmarried and I had no children, and was therefore, in Edwardian terms, a failure. I would not have had my PhD, because in those days I wouldn't have been educated to that level. This was the shock of my life."
