As subtle as a brick between the eyes. Every other word begins with "f". People scream at each other instead of conversing. The protagonist (no hero,he) deals with more problems in a day than a criminal psychiatrist would face in a year. "The Sopranos" is subtle by comparison, and often genuinely touching and funny. "Ray Donovan" is the kind of stuff that hack writers turn out when they're at the bottom of their game.
