Review of NGK

NGK (2019)
9/10
A Cult Classic Unfinished
31 May 2019
If you are a person who is interested in watching your conception of a hero entering the scene in slow motion, accompanied by terrific background scores and thrashing the villains, and delivering powerful dialogues, then i suggest you stop reading this piece now. NGK is not your cup of tea. Sorry. The best part of NGK is that a person of star value like Suriya agreed to portray a down to earth character. I was of the belief that Tamil cinema had two conceptions of a aam aadmi hero. One who is a macho, which is obviously portrayed by a superstar; and another, a person who actually suffers hardships, portrayed by a lesser known actor like it happened in Pariyerum Perumal. In NGK, Suriya proves again that he can deliver the best of natural acting. Nanda Gopalan Kumaran can be you neighbour, your friend, or some guy who sits next to you in a train. To appreciate Suriya's performance, I didn't see him in NGK. There was only NGK, and the people around him. I liked it that Selvaraghavan tried to reduce drama and make it more of a realistic classy flick. It was definitely a risk to cast an actor of immense popularity like Suriya for a story that can happen in your neighborhood. Though my only suggestion is that he could have supervised the editing procedure especially in the second half of the movie. A classic movie not necessarily come with a stellar cast. A movie maker succeeds when he delivers a good movie from a fresh cast, I would like to mention on this note, Angamaly Diaries, which had fresh faces and became a cult classic in Malayalam cinema. The supporting cast done justice to the term, they were supportive enough. The leading ladies. Here, I thought i have a little bit of resentment to express. Selvaraghavan movies are popular for its strong female characters. Sai Palalvi and Rakul Preet Singh in NGK had strong roles. But the character development was poor, thanks to script. The point when there was this romantic song featuring Suriya and Rakul, I knew that the story is taking the path down. The politics of NGK is great. Selva had defenitely done his homework. Sadly nobody noticed the fact that along with the issues faced by farmers, the movie also stresses on how youngsters who have no political interests are forced to join political parties. Today, even to get a small matter done, influence of political parties has become necessary. There are negatives which is bound to happen when a popular director has the chance to make a movie with his favorite actor. Every director might want that film to be a commercial success. No one can blame him for it. Selva could have made a better NGK, but creative freedom is to be considered. One main problem is that audience has not grown to accept an ordinary film from their extra ordinary hero. Extraordinary expectations are the villain for this good attempt of a movie.
