I liked this pilot and it does really establish much of Rockford's character for future episodes.
Without going on and on, there are several unbelievable sequences that simply are impossible. Namely shooting down a Cessna with a .38 revolver. Maybe it was a .44... Either way, it messed up a really good show.
It kinda... no it totally reminded me of the Magnum PI pilot where Magnum is driving the Ferrari being chased by the bad guys driving an old Dodge Dart or something and yet he is unable to shake them. Puh-lease!!! Magnum really needed some serious driving lessons! Maybe it was because he can't drive a stick!
Anyway, it has to be the lack of sophistication of audiences in the '70s.
