the show could have done without Gemma

Warning: Spoilers
I'm re-watching the entire series. I remember when it first aired, I disliked Gemma, but in a "love to hate" kind of way. Watching the series again, I've noticed how useless her character actually is. The entire series would have played out the exact same way without her. The story line of her being involved in JTs death went nowhere. It could have just been Clay and it would have ended up the same. The story line of Jax having his dads journals went nowhere. So all of that could have happened without her. Her being raped added nothing to the story. They would still have gone after The League. It didn't really unite Jax and Clay when she told them as Clay still betrayed the club, still had his own plans for things, it changed nothing and Jax still didn't trust him or approve of things he did. Her getting arrested and framed by Stahl didn't affect the story. Stahl was still going after the club, Stahl could have framed basically anyone else, or no one, it wouldn't have changed anything, seeing as they got her to change her story anyways, having Gemma was just a detour in the story. Gemma was useless in Ireland. Without her, Maureen would still have walked in on Jax and her daughter, they would have found out their half siblings, she still would put the letters in Jax's bag. Gemma added nothing to that story. The whole thing about Tara finding the letters could have been done without Gemma. Again, Gemma was just a detour. It would work exactly the same without her, Clay would find out about the letters, put a hit on Tara, and everything would be the same. Nero could have been introduced without her. She was unnecessary and just another detour in the story. Even her killing Tara could have been done without her. Tara could have been killed at any point during the show, either in the attempted kidnapping or the explosion at the club. Jax would still have unraveled, and it wouldn't have been so rushed. They could have really gone deep into his vengence instead of cramming it into a couple episodes. All Gemma gave us was the overused "I've got to protect my family" and it's variations, which she continued to use in this episode. I kind of want to go through the series again and turn that into a drinking game. That and "it's OK sweetheart" and "I'm sorry". Gemma's presence on the show is so painfully drawn out, the only logical explanation is that Kurt wanted to give his wife a starring role, and keep her there for as long as possible even if it undermined the show. I'm inclined to believe this because of 1- her character adding absolutely nothing to the show and 2- him having needlessly included her music in a few episodes. It's like a shrine to her. It's bad writing and bad TV to have a character that has no use. When an entire show would be the same without a character, it's bad writing to keep that character. Chuck has more purpose as a character than Gemma does. He brings comic relief, runs errands for the club, helps them on some of their jobs, etc. Won't be watching this series again, even as a drinking game.
