Ramy: 3riana grande (2020)

I'm in it for Dena
27 November 2020
Dena always grabs my attention in any scene she's in. Her second standalone episode in the series did not disappoint. To watch Dena navigate this patriarchal world is something that hits home every time. I love the creators for giving her these standalone episodes and it's always hilarious to compare the siblings in this family and how different their lives are. Dena is out here focused, intelligent, making moves and yet still worries about the curse of the Evil Eye (or her own ability to succeed in a world that's so stacked against her, being a stereotyped Muslim woman in American society). In this episode, we are forced to confront this reality as Dena comes to terms with the physical and mental tolls of her existence. Kudos to the writers.

At this point Ramy might be the least interesting character in the show. Hope to see more Dena episodes in the series or even new episodes that focus on the family as an ensemble rather than Ramy as the sole protagonist.
