Chicago P.D.: Fighting Ghosts (2020)
Season 8, Episode 1
6/10
Boring, but less because of its "wokeness" and more because of its writing
16 September 2021
To be honest, I didn't expect much from this episode after I read its reviews. However, I find that they focus their criticism on the wrong area. The episode wasn't bad because of its "political correctness", because it did address real issues and problems that the CPD has both in the show and in real life. It was bad because the way that these themes were approached were kinda boring.

There was no tension and barely any focus on the usual criminal storyline, to the point where I watched the episode 1 hour ago and I already forgot most of what even happened. Although I found Kevin's storyline much better, it also felt quite exhausting to watch (which is a shame, since he's my favorite member). I ended up scrolling on my phone at the end of the episode because it just wasn't that engaging.

I find conflict fun to watch in shows, and its why I love Chicago PD so much; the writers are very good at balancing the storyline and the tension and conflict together. But this episode felt like they tried to punch way too much into one episode instead of spreading it throughout a couple of them in order to not overwhelm the criminal storyline.
