Much Too Shy (1942)

An artist a head of his time.

Warning: Spoilers
George Formby is not going to be a comic for all tastes, I certainly couldn't watch more than one or two of his films in one sitting. But this is an amusing spoof of the art industry, with Formby an expert at drawing head but joining an art class so he can learn how to draw the rest of the subject. Someone paintings of his heads and adds bodies to them, but not clothed ones. This gets him in a lot of trouble, and it's very funny to see the aging matrons aghast by the sudden appearance of their nude portraits in the newspaper. Like Carrie Nation and her legion of angry females, they storm his trailer, light it on fire to get him out which leads to a very funny scene with the trailer running away and creating lots of chaos. Of course it all ends up in court for a goofy conclusion.

This is a very dated comedy where the helium voiced Formby and his younger helium voiced companion are rather annoying to listen to after a while. It's a semi musical with a few forgettable songs, but there are some moments where our there are some genuine belly laughs. Kathleen Harrison, who would go on to Greater success, is the leading lady in this film. The ensemble is amusing, especially the plethora of stuffy old biddies who claimed humiliation but obviously seem thrilled for the attention on the inside. I found it more amusing as a light ridicule of the stuffy art community, with good production values and for the most part fast-paced.
