Review of The Great

The Great (2020–2023)
5/10
7 for fiction comedy, 2 for history class.

From the point of view of entertainment this series is a curious comedy. But for anyone to expect any historical fidelity it's complete rubbish. It deliberately distorts Emperor Peter's character and tries to turn him into an idiot, womanizer, dumb, bloodthirsty and childlike. In fact his reign was good, with reforms that were good for the development of Russia. He was an advanced man for his time, cultured and with progressive ideas. He was a democrat, allowing religious freedom, which was not the case in any other European kingdom. He carried out bold reforms, advancing the country economically and socially.

Catherine, painted as a heroine, was an ambitious and unscrupulous woman. In addition to having conspired to depose and steal her husband's throne, she only cared about the interests of the nobility, despising the lower class. Her elitist policy brought peasants to the brink of misery. But the series takes absurd liberties and distorts everything.

Finally, the series is worth only for the beauty and grace of Elle Fanning. But her character works best in a fictional story.
