Funny, charming and sweet

I watched this for the first time today and I can kick myself for not seeing it sooner. It was delightful. Garbo is perfect parodying her persona, she starts very staunch and stoic and after a few bad jokes, a prat fall and a few glasses of champagne; she comes to life right before our eyes. Ernst Lubitsch knew exactly what he was doing by getting Greta Garbo to do this film. The chemistry she has with Melvyn Douglas is delectable, there's a scene where he is talking to her and all the acting she does is with her eyes, it's so well done. Her three comrades are charming, funny and sweet and they help supply the happy ending. There were lots of laugh out loud moments. You mustn't overlook the production design, costumes, hair, makeup and a cool hat. For those that call it propaganda, you have to remember the time; people in the free world were worried about losing their way of life and felt threatened by the communists.
