Not sure it is a sci fi film. First seen it two months ago and continue to think about it. The team that goes for the half-a-mile object is just one being, one human being. A being with aspects: psychological-Dustin's personage, phsiological-Stone's personage, the connection with the envinronment-the astrophysicist, the abstract mind-the mathematician, the fight or flight brain - that is the army crew. Jerry, a creation of the abstract aspect of the being, explores this half-a mile mysterious object. Maybe the object it' s a spherical mirror which brings too much clarity for the human being to bear? In this first encounter with Jerry the being loses or deliberately leave some of its aspects, like the lizard leaves its tail, and in the end just chooses to forget. You can not live in "absolute terror", you must forget. What remains looks like a political construct, the being fools itself but in this way it can survive. Maybe there will be another encounter and the human being will be more prepared, but not now.
