This historical drama focuses on Napoleon's relationship with Josephine, so you won't be getting a full chronicle of Napoleon's life or his military achievements and failures. However, given that this is a story about their relationship, the writers should have spent more time developing why they got together which is very lightly glossed over. Most everything about this movie is well done - the acting, story, cinematography (especially the battle scenes) and costumes. The main problem is Phoenix. Although he's one of the best actors of his generation, he is miscast and lost in the role to the point of distraction. Ultimately, it's a good watch although somewhat unnecessarily long.
