Wednesday (2022– )

Creatively bankrupt

I suffered through the entire first season hoping it would get GOOD at some point, but it doesn't. The notion of putting Wednesday Addams in Monster High is ludicrous--the whole point of the Addams Family is to serve as a juxtaposition against the "normal" nuclear families of suburbia. The central mystery is make-it-up-as-you-go dumb and the plot has too many elements that go nowhere and make no sense. The setting is trope central; if you've read a single YA book over the past twenty years, you know every beat this story is going to hit. Wednesday is poorly written and obnoxious; she just spouts one-liners (not even GOOD one-liners) and wokeisms and the whole point of the show is that she needs to learn to JUST HUG PEOPLE. What character assassination. And why the hell is she in a love triangle? With two BORING dudes. The cinematography is color-corrected to within an inch of its life; nothing has any semblance of a soul. I can't believe Gen Z is falling for this lazy crap. "You're like a living Instagram filter!" If I'm 15 I'm throwing the remote through the TV at that shameless pandering, but maybe "the kids today" enjoy being portrayed as idiots.

The only good thing is Jenna Ortega, who has been pretty vocal about hating certain elements of the show. The fact that she's now a producer gives me some semblance of hope for season 2. (Step 1, fire Gough and Millar. Those Boomer creeps couldn't write their way out of a wet paper bag.)
