Sequel Silliness
15 June 2024
Just watched Godzilla x Kong The New Empire. I was hesitant on watching this one. I know my limits of suspension of disbelief, and this movie pushed that boundry so I just sat back and let it take me on a wild, insane ride. With a cast that deserved better, this mostly animated movie tells the story of Kong as he becomes King, while Godzilla goes on a quest to juice up to face off against juxtaposed enemies. I can say this was a terrible movie based on the cartoonish animations (especially compared to the older films), I can also say the dialog and story beats feel written by a teenager, the cinematography and soundtrack feels unhinged and unfocused (seriously what was up with that fisheye lense in the middle of the movie that never showed up again), but honestly the director had fun making a giant monster mash up beat-em-up movie and it shows. It was full of wonder and kept the tone and the action constant. This must have been great for a lot of younger audiences and a those young at heart. I prefer my monster movies to have more awe than WWE moves, but this was just a fun blockbuster.
