They/Them (2022)

NOT BAD AT ALL. OTHERS APPEAR TO HAVE MISSED THE POINT
25 June 2024
With an over all review rating of 4.0 on IMDb, I really didn't hold out much hope at all that this movie was going to be anything other than the crap that most other reviewers believe it to be. Also, knowing that Kevin Bacon is almost always a reliable actor, I thought well, it can't be nearly as bad as others appear to think. And I now say those who appear to have missed the point. I've just finished watching "They/Them" and I can say that, in most ways, I was right. This, folks, is NOT a slasher movie; others have just missed the point.

There were certain things about this movie that I personally found confronting. I hesitate, for obvious reasons, to say either offensive or which particular aspects. But, let me just say that there is such a lot of confusion and delusion in the modern world which simply didn't exist, even as recently as 10-12 years ago. The scene in this movie where the "Therapist", Cora, was in consultation with Jordan, the scene in which she referred to his seeing himself as being "SPECIAL" was particularly well observed and also well written.

It was only in the final 15 minutes of the movie that some reviewers appear to have derailed and failed to see the movie for what it really is; a story of revenge for perceived past wrongs suffered by the character, Molly. It is easy to understand how she feels about what we are led to believe she suffered at the camp some years before. And some would say that her reaction, in an "American" sense, was not at all unreasonable.

Look, folks, this was by no means a great movie, but nor is it a particularly awful one. I give it 7 out of 10 for being ok but also for being a little bit brave in tackling a subject that mostly allows no questions in this modern world.
