- The story of the short film "Utah Blues: Whales in the Great Salt Lake" starts with several people describing their experiences of seeing blue whales in Utah's Great Salt Lake. It then tells the story of James Wickham, who introduces algae and krill to the lake. The krill evolve into brine shrimp. James Wickham then decides to introduce blue whales to the Great Salt Lake. He travels to Australia and finds two orphaned blue whale calves, a male and a female, and brings them back to the lake. They grow up and reproduce. Whalers plan to hunt the blue whales in the Great Salt Lake, but fail. According to legend, the Blue Whale King intimidated the Utah State Legislature into banning whaling in the state of Utah. After that, the blue whales in the great salt lake are elusive, and rarely seen. Though some say that Robert Smithson built the Spiral Jetty in 1970 as a monument to them. Sam Dunford, the film's narrator, shows a vertebra from a blue whale in the Natural History Museum of Utah. This proves that they once existed in the lake. To see whether they still do, he goes on an expedition, and finds live blue whales in the Great Salt Lake. The film concludes with a message that we must conserve water, otherwise the lake will dry up and the whales will die. The credits roll with the song "Utah- This Is The Place."
