- A small border post on the Yugoslav-Albanian border in the spring of 1987. Frustrated and always drunk, lieutenant Pasic feels a strange pain in his groins. He seeks help from the only doctor among the soldiers, Sinisa, who diagnoses a sexually transmitted disease. Not wishing his wife to know about it and trying to find excuses not to go home, he declares a state of emergency, claiming that the Albanian army is preparing an attack against Yugoslavia. A joke transforms into war hysteria: soldiers dig trenches, Pasic grows wilder as the days go by, Sinisa embarks on a dangerous liaison, and his best friend Ljuba decides to leave the army. The situation slowly runs out of control...

His older son Hatten married a Russian woman eight years ago and was banished from Majdal Shams by the religious leaders and his father. His brother Marwan is a wolf trader that lives in Italy. - A border post in Bulgaria, 1954. The mind of little Michael is full of kaleidoscopic panoramas of naïve Socialism, Balkan Stalinism and the Cold War. His father is a strong lieutenant having his ideas of duty and lofty heroism. His mother in her dream of a Chanel perfume, mixes up family honor with the pink wings of her youth, locked up in the barracks. The happy saga of people fulfilling their duty to their country is suddenly overshadowed by the emergence of a saboteur and a series of tragic events. The dramatic comedy unfolds in self-irony and fateful tragedy. Everyone is clinging to their grotesque existence over the abyss, without realizing what is happening just inches from the ground.

When the kids near adulthood, Klaus is frustrated that his parents only wine about his lost sister. Meanwhile, the time is ripening for the Berlin wall to come down. Rebecca's adoptive pa resists his wife's bitching to leave the Stasi.
- Alexei is a nineteen year old recruit being flown in to perform his military service on the frontier of northern Russia. The base is one of few such remaining outposts on the Arctic Ocean. There are five other seasoned and long serving soldiers stationed here, each with their own personal story or secret that has caused them to retreat from the real world. Their training and breaking in of the new arrival is sometimes humorous, at times harsh. Gradually, they each reveal something of themselves in their daily interactions and private moments as they continue their absurd duty in this snow covered no man's land, hundreds of miles from the nearest human settlement.
- About the difficult military service of young border guards. The action takes place on the northern borders, on a distant island, where young soldiers, led by a sergeant, serve at a technical observation post: day and night, they "feel" with a searchlight beam and waves of a radar station in the assigned area. The "pood of salt" had to be eaten together by the soldiers before they realized how close their border was.
