Patsy Clark, daughter of Blue Sox owner, Joe Clark, helps Johnny get another chance with the team. But Johnny has fallen in love with Gloria and hates to walk out on his singing contract. Johnny's troubles are solved when rain prevents the important All-Star exhibition game which was scheduled for the same evening.

He is aided in his quest by Betty Holloway, who has competition from Gloria Pelley, Ted's rich girlfriend from his hometown.

- The always-welcome Elyse Knox and her All-American footballer turned broadcaster husband Tom Harmon appear together in this film but are not romantically involved, as she is the co-ed "sweetheart" of the title and he coaches the Varsity rowing crew. Some source describes Miss Knox as a B-actress. A more apt and better description would be one that describes her as an Actress who never got out of B-movies. This one is about half plot and half music but the plot is stretched pretty thin to cover 35 of the 75 minutes when it essentially boils down to: a couple of gamblers pressure the local night club(soft drinks only)owner to rig things so the local college rowing crew will lose their upcoming race. End of plot when the cowswain of the home team uses a rabbit's foot to plug the hole the gamblers cut in the bottom of their racing shell. Two of 1945's top hits, "Five Minutes More" and Slim Gaillard's "Cement Mixer, Putti-Putti" are performed, although some people who heard "Cement Mixer" in 1945 are still wondering what it was all about.
- Returning soldier Dixon Harper meets cute with promising radio singer Susan Parker. Susan is mistaken for a heiress to a southern plantation by blustery colonel Farnsworth and she ignores wise cracking friend Diane to see the ruse through.
- Evelyn Palmer, a débutante society girl who also is a property landlord, becomes interested in the plight of one of her tenants, a struggling bandleader, to the extent she becomes a hostess in a dance club, incognito, where the band plays, and soon is the band's singer. Her identity is discovered and newspaper publicity about her causes a quarrel between her and the bandleader,and this is also disruptive to their budding romance.
- Peggy (Peggy Ryan)), a messenger, delivers a telegram to The Flamingo Club where the Andrews Sisters (The Andrews Sisters) and Bob Edwards' Orchestra are appearing. Peggy learns that the club's owner, Harrison (William Frawley), intends to enlarge his show and she persuades him to give her and her friends a tryout. If they make good, they can save the dancing school run by Professor Woof ('Charles Butterworth')) and Gribble (Walter Catlett)) . Press agent Kendall (Richard Davies) recognizes the leader of the group as Gracie Waverly ('Grace MacDonald'), the niece of three millionaire aunts. When Gracie's picture appears in the newspaper, Harrison immediately signs the group, the Waverly sisters, order Gracie never to dance again or she will be disinherited. Professor Woof, using the Andrews Sisters to pose as the Wavely sisters, as a ruse to allow Gribble to bring Harrison to get permission to sign Gracie; this works until the real Waverly sisters show up, and with two sets of Waverly's, complications arise.
