- Four well-mannered but poorly grown brothers drift into a life of crime when their schizophrenic father is sent to the mental hospital.

- Taking sauna is the Finnish people's national obsession, so there are two of the per five Fins, and they build theme everywhere, even on military operations and aboard vessels, but preferably near a lake, to dive in even on ice days, with trees to cut whisking birches from. Weekly, usually on Saturday, is considered a hygienic minimum, daily the good life, especially in summer and holidays. It's a family and/or social activity, relaxing and removing social barriers, but also linked to sports and all kinds of bonding.

The dramatic plot is frequently interrupted by absurd comic relief.

- A satirical story based on Arto Paasilinna's novel about the bridge engineer Jaatinen and his activities in the municipality of Kuusmäki. Jaatinen gets along with the workers, but he is at odds with the municipality's decision-makers. The bridge engineer's private life is also a source of resentment.
- Lieutenant general T. J. A. Heikkilä (Tauno Palo) is sent to Sierranueva on a secret mission with his adjutant Silvio (Jorma Nortimo). In Sierranueva, they get mixed up in a political conspiracy, and Heikkilä meets a dark mysterious woman (Regina Linnanheimo).
- In the 1910s, beautiful young Silja loses both parents and ends up working as a maid at wealthier farms around her village. She is courted by a number of bachelors, ranging from simple farmhand Väinö to sophisticated young student Armas whom she meets when working for a charming old professor. However, Silja's health starts to deteriorate, and when the Finnish Civil War breaks up in 1918, she is inadvertently involved in a small incident after which her loyalties are questioned by both the Reds and the Whites.
- Yrjö Niemelä moves to Helsinki. There he, unemployed, homeless, and penniless, tries to commit suicide but is rescued by a soldier of the Salvation Army.
- A man gets a job as a teacher in Northern Finland and has to face the harsh conditions and prejudices of the local people while also falling in love with a strong-willed woman.
