The film makes quite a few references to the "original six" NHL teams active during this time. The Violets are based on the New York Rangers, their jersey's are similar and play at Madison Square Garden. In the film they play against teams known as the "Leafs" (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Shamrocks (the original name of the Chicago Blackhawks). The jersey worn by the "leafs" in the film is similar to that of the Montreal Canadiens. The team also mentions playing in Boston at one point in the film.
Hockey players from the University of Southern California and Loyola University were used in the movie.
Dick Purcell had been a hockey player for Fordham University; writer George Bricker was a former New York sports writer. A native of Los Angeles, Wayne Morris played football at Los Angeles Junior College.
Peggy O'Rourke's nickname is "Princess." Perhaps coincidentally, seven years later producer Hal Wallis and Warners made a film called Princess O'Rourke (1943), but there is no other connection between the two apart from actor Harry Davenport.
