The Hindenburg is mentioned as (successfully) completing a trans-Atlantic trip, with the husband on board. This movie was released in the USA on March 5, 1937. The Hindenburg disaster occurred on May 6, 1937. It never made its return flight to Europe.
Bruce tells Irene that he wants to travel with her to Europe on the Hindenburg, a famous German airship of the time. Two months after this film was released, in May 1937, the Hindenburg exploded while docking in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing thirty-six passengers, in one of the first major world disasters caught on film.
Early in the film, a newspaper spread reads "Mrs. Vail wins nisi decree." Nisi is a legal term meaning not complete, or more accurately, not until conditions have been met. In other words, it is a provisional divorce decree, and the couple is still legally married until the final papers go through.
There are multiple references to Mrs. Vail as a "former manikin" in the papers at the beginning of the film. The alternate spelling of mannequin has fallen out of favor since, but suggests that she was a model before marriage.
This film has been noted by critics for its blending of genres, including comedy, drama, and romance, as well as introducing elements of suspense and disaster films in its final act.
