Powered by “Barbenheimer,” 2023 box office in Spain surged 31% to €487.5 ($541.1 million), still 18.2% below a pre-pandemic average of €596 million ($661.6 million) over 2015-19.
At 74.9 million tickets sold, admissions rose 26%, 24% down on pre-covid cinemagoing, according to Comscore Movies Spain, which announced 2023 results through Dec. 29 on Friday.
“2023 was the third consecutive year of box office recovery in Spain,” David Rodríguez, Comscore Movies general manager for Spain and Portugal, told Variety.
That said, Spain’s 2023 recovery looks set to continue down on France’s and Germany’s and most especially the U.K.’s, but in line with Italy’s.
“Economies in Northern Europe are stronger and Covid-19 restrictions on cinema attendance lasted longer in Spain and Italy,” said Rodríguez.
As all over the world, war in the Ukraine, Gaza and above all Hollywood’s double strike, which pushed back key releases to 2024 and 2025, created “turbulence,” frustrating a more powerful B.O. rally in Spain, he added.

Despite being titled Paint My Bedroom Black, Holly Humberstone’s full-length debut is an amalgamation of flashing colors, moving from cerulean blue to super blood moon orange at hyper-speed. In a lot of ways, the chaos reflects the English singer-songwriter’s own life.
Her two previous EPs, 2020’s Falling Asleep At The Wheel and 2021’s The Walls Are Way Too Thin found instant success and garnered a dedicated online fanbase. Shortly after, she opened for Olivia Rodrigo on her North American tour. Paint My Bedroom Black was mostly written on the road,...

Toronto rapper Haviah Mighty has announced her new album, Crying Crystals, out on July 14th. As the latest preview of the record, she’s shared a collaboration with her sister Omega Mighty called “Zoom Zoom.”
Spanning 13 tracks, Crying Crystals features appearances from a diverse roster of rappers including Chicago mainstay Jean Deaux, New Zealander JessB, and Montreal native Zach Zoya, the latter of whom guests on a pair of songs. Thus far, Mighty has also teased the album with “Huh,” “Room Service,” and “Honey Bun.”
As Mighty tells Consequence, “Zoom Zoom” was inspired by a 2023 Toronto summer and trying out new sonics. “The amapiano sound has a grip on the city because of its amalgamation of dance and Afro sounds fused together,” she explains. “I wanted to explore producing in that world.”

Haviah Mighty is back with a new single, “Huh,” a dancey, breakup track which places the Canadian rapper’s knack for emotional expression at the center of a ready-for-the-club beat. Stream the song below.
Taking stylistic cues from dancehall, “Huh” balances Haviah’s hard-hitting flow with moments of bubbling, rhythmic goodness. As the lyrics “It’s a shame you let me down/ the way you did” shine through glitched-out vocal processing, the underlying pulse of the backbeat chugs on, creating a symbolic tension of sorts.
“‘Huh’ is a tale of disappointment following the narration of a desperate lover who is losing the love of their life, and vowing to change to reverse it all,” Haviah explained in a press statement. “Desperate to go back to how it was, they’re taking responsibility for the incompatibility, and suffering a mind/body separation of sorts where their mind is wrapped up in the traumatic loss,...

Haviah Mighty is kicking off 2023 with a one-two punch to your feels.
On Jan. 27, the Toronto-born, Brampton-based artist dropped her latest hit, “Room Service,” a soulful and sultry tune that hears her singing rather than spitting her signature dextrous bars. Today, she’s dropped a stunning visual experience that blends the new track and 2022’s “Honey Bun” into one cinematic journey. Watch above.
Haviah, who last year became the first woman to win the Juno Award for Rap Album/EP of the Year and was the sole Canadian artist nominated for a 2022 BET Award in the Best International Flow category, expands on the themes of love and loss in both tracks.

Fredriksson’s management company, Dimberg Jernberg Management, confirmed her death. Her Roxette bandmate, Per Gessle, also issued a statement on social media and via Dimberg Jernberg, saying, “Time goes by so quickly. In a plot reminiscent of W.C. Fields’ The Old Fashioned Way, Groucho plays a down on his luck theatrical producer saddled with a stage full of hungry actors. Adapted from the 1937 broadway hit, this was the Marx Brothers’ first film not tailored specifically to their characters. The movie co-stars Lucille Ball and a very young Ann Miller (15!).

For over twenty years, artistic director Dan Wackerman's Peccadillo Theater Company has specialized in mounting handsome productions of infrequently revived Broadway fare of notable pedigree, such as Elmer Rice's Counsellor At Law, Dorothy Parker and Arnaud d'Usseau's Ladies Of The Corridor and, most notably, a sparkling, uproarious revival of John Murray amp Allen Boretz's classic comedy, Room Service.

Chrissy Teigen has a talent for taking the mundane and making it hilarious, and this week, she discovered British television. More precisely, the Channel 4 show Naked Attraction. Doing what she does best online, Chrissy took to Twitter to describe her feeling toward said show, and obviously it was more entertaining than the program itself. During her visit to London with John Legend, Chrissy appeared to be relaxing in a hotel room, flicking through the channels, when she came across a group of naked bodies. She tweeted her discovery, opening the discussion with this tweet: "What Tf Is This it's dating based on genitals. Like I'm seeing pp's." Other UK natives started tweeting along, sharing more facts about the show, while those unfamiliar with the show were equally as confused. Chrissy even had to pretend to be watching tennis when room service was delivered, which is definitely all of us...

Anthony Bourdain has a vision of what a “normal” family is: “It’s one of those weird sitcoms where Mom and Dad and their kids all sit down at the table and eat dinner together.” But when it comes to his own life, “that’s just not the way it ever was,” he says.

Above: 1960s French stock poster for Marx Brothers revivals. This weekend New York’s Film Forum begins a week-long series entitled The Marx Brothers & The Golden Age of Vaudeville which is as good an excuse as any to look at the representation of the greatest sibling comedy team in cinema through movie posters. It has long been a tradition in movie poster illustration to render comedy stars as caricatures—often with oversized heads on small bodies—and Groucho, Harpo and Chico were a caricaturist’s dream. (Zeppo, the straight man, less so, but he left the act after Duck Soup in 1933, and re-release posters for the films he appeared in tend to ignore him, as in the Belgian Duck Soup and the Danish Horse Feathers below). With their distinctive props—Groucho’s oversized greasepaint mustache and cigar, Harpo’s curly blonde wig and Chico’s Alpine hat—the threesome could...

Director Yedidya Gorsetman and co-writer Mark Leidner wanted to be the next Duplass Brothers.
Inspired by the micro-budget mumblecore films they’d seen coming out of SXSW, they made “Jammed,” a $17,000 feature about a couple trying, and failing, to relive their youth by going to a jam band festival.
After screening the film at smaller film festivals, Gorsetman came to an important realization: he wanted to continue pursuing his career as a filmmaker, but that making micro budget indies wouldn’t be a path to career sustainability.

“I want to make films that were accessible to a larger audience, in part because it would allow me to make more movies” said Gorsetman.

The recent box office success of The Boss firmly establishes Melissa McCarthy as the current queen of movie comedies (Amy Schumer could be a new contender after an impressive debut last Summer with Trainwreck), but let us think back about those other funny ladies of filmdom. So while we’re enjoying the female reboot/re-imagining of Ghostbusters and those Bad Moms, here’s a top ten list that will hopefully inspire lots of laughter and cause you to search out some classic comedies. It’s tough to narrow them down to ten, but we’ll do our best, beginning with… 10. Eve Arden The droll Ms. Arden represents the comic sidekicks who will attempt to puncture the pomposity of the leading ladies with a well-placed wisecrack (see also the great Thelma Ritter in Rear Window). Her career began in the early 1930’s with great bit roles in Stage Door and Dancing Lady.

Two hot TV projects, an environmental zombie and an unhinged park ranger were among highlights at the eighth edition of the horror market.
Frontières International Co-Production Market continued to showcase its growth at Fantasia International Film Festival as it kicked off its eighth edition on Thursday [July 21].
Earlier this year, the genre market announced a new partnership with the Marché du Film at Cannes, and the popularity of its pitching session at Fantasia meant that it moved to the festival’s bigger venue to accommodate the growing industry interest.
This edition’s 20 projects also saw the market’s remit expand to include two television projects for the first time.

American Horror Story has been a spectacular showcase for female characters and the actors playing those roles. Jessica Lange was a revelation. Lily Rabe stole season two. Season three was an ensemble of female characters. Season four's most affecting parts were concerning the women of the Freak Show. And this season, the female character that deserves the most attention and praise just happens to be played by a man. There's glamour and grandeur, acid wit and tender compassion... American Horror Story's shared universe aspect comes into its own this week with the fun return of a Coven character...
This review contains spoilers.
1.11 Battle Royale
It took Ryan Murphy five seasons and a return to a familiar stomping ground to bring American Horror Story full circle. The recycling of Pepper last season was a nice touch, and the freak show or the asylum was a common destination for unfortunate microcephalics back in the dark days, so to have the character move from one to the other makes sense. However, there wasn't a lot of modern crossing-over, aside from using the same actors. That's changed with Hotel. Whether it's the La location or the modern setting, old familiar faces have been popping up (and usually dying horribly) within the confines of the Hotel Cortez.

Episode ten of American Horror Story Hotel, She Gets Revenge, works spectacularly well...
This review contains spoilers.
5.10 She Gets Revenge
There aren't a lot of action sequences in American Horror Story, but when something violent happens, as it does a lot this season, they tend to make a lot of it. The Hotel Cortez has been home to some terrible things, and it's always very stylish to behold. However, the titular Hotel is not really the centre of sweetness. Sure, there have been a few nice moments her and there, but nothing consistent, or played as straight as the reunion between Liz Taylor and her long-lost son Dennis. Throughout the episode, Liz and Iris make plans to commit suicide, but first they have to tie up their loose ends to keep from becoming prisoners of the Cortez. For Iris, that's simple: she has to cancel her magazines...

It's been a while since a season of American Horror Story has been this consistently good, both in terms of acting, characterisation, and general plotting. Evan Peters and Wes Bentley's characters make the perfect counterpoint in this week's fun, ever-stylish American Horror Story: Hotel...

5.8 The Ten Commandments Killer
There's not a lot of artifice or misdirection to Ryan Murphy's television shows. Very rarely does he pull off a surprise, and when he does pull off a surprise—see the Rubber Man from Murder House—it's not always very good or very welcome. I'm not even sure he's trying to spring surprises anymore, given just how long the show has telegraphed the very “twist” it unfurls this week. John Lowe, ace detective and the man obsessed with tracking down the Ten Commandments Killer, is actually the Ten Commandments Killer, which is something people have basically been discussing since the earliest stages of the season.

John Lowe, ace detective and the man obsessed with tracking down the Ten Commandments Killer, is actually the Ten Commandments Killer, which is something people have basically been discussing since the earliest stages of the season.
It's a predictable turn of events, and one that the show's been building on for multiple weeks,...

Rarely has American Horror Story sustained its current level of momentum, quality and sheer entertainment...
This review contains spoilers.
5.7 Flicker
I absolutely love it when American Horror Story uses film-making style to help tell their story. It's not a question of the way the characters dress or the way the sets are displayed, but a question of actual technical techniques. A significant portion of Flicker is devoted to the life and times of a very young Countess—long before she was the Countess—as a fresh-faced Italian girl from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn who made her way out to Hollywood to become a star on the silver screen. A chance appearance as a harem girl leads to a meeting that will change young Countess's life forever as she finds herself wooed by the most famous lover in history, Rudolph Valentino (Finn Wittrock, playing a new role) and his glamorous wife,...

How terrifying can a baby really be? Er, pretty bloody terrifying judging by this week's episode of American Horror Story: Hotel...
This review contains spoilers.
5.6 Room 33
Lady Gaga's got a thing with her fans. She calls them her little monsters. It's a great fandom nickname, akin to the Kiss Army in terms of recognizability. After all, there's a whole episode of The Simpsons based around Gaga's schtick. It's the worst episode The Simpsons has ever done, but that's not the point. It's a known quantity, and I have no doubt it's been one of the inspirations for Countess's collection of creepy children, alongside The Shining and Village Of The Damned. They're actual little monsters, and she's their mother.
Of course, she's not just their adopted mother, she's the actual mother of at least one child, courtesy of the good butchers at Murder House. That's right, Countess...

Vampire children run amok among multiple plot-threads in this week's American Horror Story: Hotel episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.5 Room Service
There's a lot going on in every episode of American Horror Story, and sometimes it makes it difficult to figure out just how to sit down and write a review like this. I mean, when the show is full of plot elements, how can you really focus on one? Last week was easy; a serial killer dinner party is always going to be attention-grabbing, but this week's episode had multiple fun things happening, so I guess I'll just stop waffling and go right to the vampire children.
Alex, the caring nurturer of Holden that she is, has been newly minted as a vampire by Countess Gaga, and she's having a little trouble adjusting. She's woozy, she's room temperature, her Pov shots are all blurry, she's vacant and clammy.

Shock recaps last night’s American Horror Story: Hotel episode. Spoiler Alert! Alex’s “infection” is complete. Her temperature is 75.5, and she looks like death. Luckily Mrs. Ellison is too worried about her son, Max, to notice. Max’s pneumonia is turning to staph, and the nurses ask Mrs. Ellison if she wants to sign a Dnr.…

Turns out being turned isn't all that it's cracked up to be. If you're turned by the Countess, there are a ton of rules you have to follow, not to mention that you'll have to worry about her ruining your life. And if you're just plain turned by anyone else, you have to learn to adjust accordingly and get the shakes if you're not "fed properly." In American Horror Story: Hotel, both Alex and Iris learn these lessons the hard way as they adjust to life in the afterlife. Meanwhile, in "Room Service," John gets some disappointing news at work and at the hotel.

Marx Brothers fans will be delighted, as TCM is presenting no less than 11 of their comedies, in addition to a brotherly reunion in the 1957 all-star fantasy The Story of Mankind. Non-Marx Brothers fans should be delighted as well – as long as they're fans of Kay Francis, Thelma Todd, Ann Miller, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Allan Jones, affectionate, long-tongued giraffes, and/or that great, scene-stealing dowager, Margaret Dumont. Right now, TCM is showing Robert Florey and Joseph Santley's The Cocoanuts (1929), an early talkie notable as the first movie featuring the four Marx Brothers – Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo. Based on their hit Broadway...

Mr. and Mrs. Robin Williams are slow dancing. The time: a winter afternoon. The place: a photographer's studio in the Chelsea section of New York. The music: high-decibel funk. Everybody else in the studio is abuzz — adjusting lights, fussing with props, running back and forth from the kitchen with sushi. Ever wonder what Pitbull was like before he became Mr. Worldwide? Wonder no more. Feast your eyes and ears on 18-year-old Armando Christian Pérez as he raps about safe sex at a high school performance. Dale!
In the video, posted back in December but woefully undiscovered, Miami native “Chris” announces that he will perform “AIDS Plays” and “Love to Live,” though we only get to hear the former. A far cry from his sexy hits “I Know You Want Me” and “Hotel Room Service,” “AIDS Plays” acts as more of a PSA for safe sex. He’s trying to send a message.

Okay, we have to admit it. This video is just so odd. Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler shared a video on Twitter on Saturday that showed him trying to leave a note for Miley Cyrus under her hotel room door in Finland. In the video, captioned "Room Service in Helsinki," the 66-year-old creeps up towards the "Wrecking Ball" singer's suite. "Oooooh, I think Miley Cyrus is here," he says in his best Elmer Fudd impersonation. "But Shhhhh - she's very very sleepy." The former American Idol judge holds up the handwritten note he wants to leave for the singer, who's in Finland on her Bangerz tour,...

It has been a long running joke that Adam Sandler has been planning his films around vacations that he wants to take. Even in our in-house review of Blended, Sandler has been called out for using studio budgets to subsidize his desires to travel to exotic places, hang out with his friends, or be married to [insert name of ridiculously attractive actress here]. In short, Adam Sandler has been making the most expensive series of fake home movies since Cloverfield, and he's never been called out on it. At least, not until his last visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live. Fittingly, The Onion's A.V. Club was the site to run with the story buried in an innocuous looking clip entitled Adam Sandler On Room Service In Africa. While that was eventually the main thrust of the clip, the opening set up what should have really been the focus of the ...

Austin Film Society has another installment of their "That's Genius" series on Sunday night at the Marchesa. They've invited local filmmaker Yen Tan (Pit Stop) to present a favorite film and he chose Parking. The 2008 film from Taiwan is directed by Chung Mong-Hong and will be screened in 35mm. I'm also incredibly excited about Thursday night's Essential Cinema presentation of Bob Fosse's All That Jazz. This month's theme is "After 8 1/2: The Creative In Crisis" and this film tells the story of a Broadway producer who overworks himself right into a heart attack.
The Austin Youth Film Festival is happening on Saturday at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. Local filmmakers will be on hand to judge short films from area students who have a chance to win prizes up to $1000! Standard tickets are available for just $10 and you also have the option to buy a $25 ticket that includes a t-shirt...

Of all the celebrity beach days we've seen this week, Kelly Rowland's was arguably the most fun-filled. The singer sported a purple bikini and printed caftan for her day in the Miami sun on Thursday, but rather than spend the whole afternoon basking in the sun - which she did do - Kelly made the most of her time on the sand by playing soccer with a couple of cute kids, even stopping to help them build sand castles. It wasn't clear whether the little ones were in Kelly's beach brigade or not, but it still resulted in some pretty adorable snaps. Kelly, who recently became engaged to her manager, Tim Witherspoon, rang in 2014 by hosting a New Year's Eve party at the Room Service Lounge in Miami. Her former Destiny's Child bandmate and Bff Beyoncé was also in Florida, where she and husband Jay Z partied at Diddy's bash along with Drake,...

A former Royal Caribbean cruise room attendant accuses John Travolta in a federal lawsuit of stripping off a robe and pushing against him, then offering him $12,000 to keep quiet. Fabian Zanzi alleges the actor said, "Take me, I will take care of you, please," during a food delivery to his cabin in June 2009, according to the U.S. District Court lawsuit filed June 21 in Los Angeles. Zanzi, who first made these allegations to the Spanish-language news outlet 24 Horas, is seeking unspecified damages for assault and battery and emotional distress.
