Early Argentine Film Insights
I recently saw a screening of this film at MoMA out of curiosity to see something I'd never seen previously, a very early Argentine musical film. It was interesting to see how Hollywood already had a strong influence on film throughout Argentina. I cannot say with confidence but am guessing it's influence was equally felt throughout the rest of South America by this time as well. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Nevertheless this film was uniquely Argentinian. The lead character owns a nightclub/supper-club establishment which is always struggling to stay afloat and is continually borrowing funds from a female character with ample funds. She seems to be providing the funds to get at one of the clubs leading performers, a dashingly good looking singer who is in love with a single mother trying to make ends meet. Unfortunately, the club owner also loves this same single other woman. Low budget production musical numbers are made up for by a very enthusiastic and energetic cast. Overall I'm happy I took the time to check out Cuatro Corazones.
