- Jerry North (William Post Jr.) and his wife, Pam (Gracie Allen) return home after a night away in a holiday spirit. That soon vanishes when the body of a man falls out of the liquor closet. The corpse is identified as Stanley Brent, the estranged husband of Carol Brent (Rose Hobart), a friend of Pam's. As the clues are unearthed, it appears that some member of the North's social circle, who knew they would be away, gained entrance to their apartment, asked Brent to come there and murdered him. Pam tries to establish alibis for all of her friends, and in doing so inadvertently establishes who killed Brent.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- New York City book publisher and aspiring author Gerry North loves his ditsy wife Pam, despite her scatterbrained ramblings often complicating and confusing their lives. After both are concurrently away from their apartment for approximately twenty-four hours, Gerry in Boston on business and Pam visiting her mother, they return home having the feeling that someone has been there, that feeling corroborated by other information they receive. They are certain when Pam discovers a dead body in their liquor closet, that of a man killed by blunt force trauma to the back of the head. They inform the police that they don't know who he is, but when the police identify him as lawyer Stanley Brent, they have to admit to themselves that they do know him remotely, he having litigated a case against Gerry two years ago, and his wife Carol Brent a close friend of Pam's. Their marriage will be tested when they, already on the police's suspect list, both together and individually, not only begin to suspect each other, but Pam's chatterbox nature, doing what she believes best, only implicates them further to the police. They eventually also learn that many of their so-called close friends are tied to the Brents, individually, dually, personally and/or professionally. Throw in an ignored Fuller Brush salesman, the Norths' kindly mailman and dedicated building steward into the mix, and one madcap murder investigation ensues.—Huggo
