Acquired by Ava DuVernay’s Array Releasing earlier this month, Deepa Mehta’s “Funny Boy,” an adaptation of Shyam Selvadurai’s 1994 novel of the same name, has been announced as Canada’s official selection for Best International Feature Film for the 2021 Academy Awards. Set for release on Netflix beginning Thursday, December 10, Array has premiered a first-look trailer for the film.
Shot on location in Colombo, Sri Lanka, “Funny Boy” centers on the “awakening of sexual identity by a young boy named Arjie. As political tensions escalate to a boiling point between the minority Tamils and the majority Sinhalese, a young boy comes of age in a society and family that doesn’t embrace difference outside of societal norms. The film chronicles Arjie’s struggle to find balance and self-love despite the absence of empathy and understanding.”

Ben Wheatley is fast becoming a director whose work is simply a must see occasion. Whether it is a haunting success (The Kill List – this writer’s personal favourite Wheatley offering so far) or a far reaching stumble (the sadly pretentious High Rise), you feel compelled to see what Wheatley has come up with next on the big screen. In the case of his latest (Martin Scorsese exec produced) film, Free Fire, Wheatley strips down the plot to one basic – but no less ambitious – idea. A movie that consists almost entirely of a shootout! It sounds crazy, it sounds unattainable, it sounds frantic, in a way it is all three of those things but my goodness is it a sight to see.
The simplistic plot is of course the gateway to an array of themes in which retro male machismo clashes and results in pure chaos. Free Fire is a...

The spaghetti western subgenre is littered with series-headlining characters like Sabata, Sartana, and Ringo. But for sheer popularity as well as film volume, no one beats Django.
Director Sergio Corbucci introduced Django to an international audience in 1966. Starring Franco Nero as the titular character, the film was so immensely popular across the globe that it spawned at least 60 unofficial sequels with titles like Django the Bastard, Viva! Django, Django Kill…If You Live Shoot!, Django Kills Softly, and literally dozens of others. There was even a comedy western entitled Nude Django. The name continues to live on with Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012), which not only sports the original “Django” theme song but also a small part for Django himself, Franco Nero, as a bettor during a Mandingo fight.
The Italians are famous for jumping onto any cinematic bandwagon,...

Chicago – In a film that had a sassy, arbitrary perspective on its own flipped-out story, “Free Fire” sought to out-Quentin Tarantino in freaky funny characters and ammo-splurging gun battles. Director Ben Wheatley (“High-Rise”) took an ensemble cast to rarified heights of insult comedy, revenge dynamics and bullets that hit the bone.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
It’s basically an arms sale that goes bad, and it’s set in 1978. The rogue cast of characters include stand-outs Sharito Copley (the South African actor from “District 9”), Armie Hammer and Brie Larson. The film is shot in straightforward real time, and the gun battle that takes place after the deal falls apart was a relentless point-of-view survival story that devolved into an unrelenting necessity for humans to wreak havoc on each other. Under director Wheatley, there is a bit of winking at the camera, symbolic statements on the futility of battle, and film class...

Hold on to your wallets and purses, here comes the creeps and crooks because it’s crime time once again at the multiplex (and I’m not talking about those concession prices). This week’s flick is more of an offshoot of the crime genre: it’s the heist flick, or more specifically, the heist “gone wrong” flick. Now, this isn’t a sophisticated caper thriller, say like the Oceans 11 franchise (that all-female “spin” is on its way) or even The Thomas Crown Affair (68′ and 99′). The dudes (and dame) in this movie could never pass in “high society” (like that suave Cary Grant in To Catch A Thief), they’re “working class” criminals. These types have been a very frequent source for “indie” films, from Blood Simple and Reservoir Dogs to, well, last year’s critical “darling” Hell Or High Water. This tale varies from the caper formula since they...

It’s a little bit of an understatement to say that filmmaker Ben Wheatley has not made mainstream movies so far. His films are niche items, albeit sometimes incredibly compelling ones. This week, he makes what might be his most mainstream flick possibly, an action comedy of sorts in Free Fire. Although still decidedly independent, this is like the Mexican standoff sequence in Reservoir Dogs, but if that was an entire 90 minute movie. It’s a riot of a film. A literal blast, if you will. Helping to lead the charge is Brie Larson, who seems incapable of not turning in very solid work when the camera starts rolling. She’s just dynamite. The movie centers around an arms deal gone bad. Taking place in Boston in 1978, two gangs meet in an abandoned warehouse, ostensibly to buy/sell some guns. Set in motion by middle man Ord (Armie Hammer) one...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A 90-minute shootout that never makes us care who lives and who dies. In attempting to send up a cinematic cliché, this only becomes a tedious example of same. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): increasingly not a fan of Ben Wheatley
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Eight people walk into an abandoned warehouse in Boston in 1978. There’s Chris (Cillian Murphy: Anthropoid, In the Heart of the Sea), whom we can presume is Ira because he has an Irish accent and he’s there to buy enough guns to supply a small army. There’s Justine (Brie Larson: Kong: Skull Island, Room), who has brokered the deal with Ord (Armie Hammer: The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Entourage)… or is it Ord who has brokered the deal with seller Vernon (Sharlto Copley: Chappie,...

Ben Wheatley has been one of my favorite indie filmmakers over the last few years, with his consistently stellar and thought-provoking work on projects like Kill List, A Field in England, High-Rise, his contribution to The ABCs of Death anthology, as well as Sightseers, his dark comedy that’s one of my very favorite movies from the last five years. So from the get-go, once I heard about Free Fire, and the talent that Wheatley would be working with on his explosive actioner, I was admittedly 110% on board, sight unseen.
And, thankfully, Wheatley’s satirical send-up of society’s obsession with guns lived up to my lofty expectations (and then some), as he takes the one of the things we love most about action movies—the shootout scene—and stretches it into a hilariously violent character piece that’s as relentlessly paced as it is relentlessly funny.

Ben Wheatley is, for my money, one of the most interesting filmmakers to come out of the UK in the past 10 years. In what appears to be a bid to tackle as many genres as he can in his first decade directing features, Wheatley has turned his hand to action with his latest venture Free Fire.
Free Fire follows the events of an arms deal taking place in late 1970s Boston between Ira operatives and a South African gun runner. In one corner is Chris (Cillian Murphy) and Frank (regular Wheatley collaborator Michael Smiley) who are planning to take some M16 rifles back to Ireland with the assistance of paid for muscle Bernie (Enzo Cilenti) and Frank’s brother-in-law Stevo (Sam Riley). In the other corner is...

It premiered last fall during Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section, but this spring, Ben Wheatley‘s shoot-em-up Free Fire will finally unload into theaters. In between its U.S. release in mid-April, the Martin Scorsese-produced actioner hit the U.K. in March and Japan in late April, and now a pair of new trailers have arrived for both. While each are brief, the one from Japan makes it appear as wild as the latest Sion Sono feature, so consider us sold. If one wants more of a taste, a variety of posters — including the snap of a new Mondo print from Rook Films — have all debuted ahead of the film’s U.S. premiere at SXSW today.

France has a rich history of horror. There’s the sadomasochistic novels of the Marquis de Sade as well as the blood and guts of Grand Guignol theatre. In cinema, the horror lineage runs deep. There’s Georges Méliès’ shorts and trick films (The Haunted Castle [1896], The Four Troublesome Heads [1898]); the eye-slicing of Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel’s Un chien andalou (1929); Georges Franju’s nauseating documentary on slaughterhouses, Blood of the Beasts (1949), as well as his clinical and poetic Eyes Without a Face (1960); there’s Henri-Georges Clouzot’s nasty Diabolique (1955); and the rotting poetry of Jean Rollin’s collective work. Flash forward a few decades, to the mid-1990s and 2000s, where we find the intense and brutal "New French Extremity" films by Philippe Grandrieux, Bruno Dumont, Gaspar Noé, Marina de Van, and others. And there are the genre filmmakers creating work around the same time as the more...

With acclaimed filmmaker, Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire currently on tour around the UK two brand new 60 second trailers and a poster have been released ahead of its March 31st release. Actually, when we say two new trailers it’s actually the same trailer, but one is full of foul mouthed extremities and the other, for those less favourable to explicit spoutings, is a much cleaner, family friendly version.

The 1970s was a tough decade for Brie Larson, and she wasn’t even born until 1989.
Larson, who bulldozed her way into the public consciousness with her Oscar-winning performance in 2015’s Room, has two nail-biting thrillers coming out in the next two months, and both take place in the 1970s.
The big-studio action pic Kong: Skull Island opens March 10th and stars Larson as a photojournalist on a 1973 expedition to a South Pacific island that happens to be home to a giant, angryape, and the indie film Free Fire opens April 21st and casts Larson as the broker in an illegal arms deal that goes terribly wrong in late 1970s Massachusetts.

BFI and Film 4 funded throwback, gun-slinging movie Free Fire, directed by Essex-born Writer and Director Ben Wheatley, is set to go on tour around the UK and Ireland with special preview screenings.
Wheatley, whose films such as Sightseers and High-Rise have won critical acclaim will join the tour, appearing for special Q&A’s with appearances from the cast at select screenings – but of course, that all remains hush-hush right now. Be prepared as any member of the tremendous cast, including Sharlto Copley (Hardcore Henry), Armie Hammer (Nocturnal Animals), the new Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Anthropoid), Jack Reynor (Sing Street), Babou Ceesay (Eye in the Sky), Enzo Cilenti (Game of Thrones, Guardians of the Galaxy), Sam Riley (Maleficent), Michael Smiley (The Lobster) and Noah Taylor (Submarine).

The work of filmmaker Ben Wheatley has been nothing if not diverse - each of his films has been vastly different to the last, jumping from dark thriller to darker comedy, and folk horror to dystopian drama. With action thriller Free Fire, Wheatley seems to be taking a more straightforward route, particular so after the brilliant madness of this year's High Rise. Written with Amy Jump, Wheatley's wife and frequent collaborator, Free Fire packs an all-star cast featuring Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley and Jack Reynor. Check out the first trailer: Justine (Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen (Murphy and Smiley) and a gang led by Vernon (Copley) and Ord (Hammer) who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired in the handover, a heart stopping game of survival ensues. With Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer,...

Tiff’s Colin Geddes was correct when introducing Ben Wheatley’s bottle episode of a film Free Fire with the words: “This will wake you up.” The gunfire alone risks perforating your eardrums as John Denver blares from a 1978-era van’s eight-track, but I think it’s the surprising wealth of comedy that ultimately gets the blood pumping and synapses triggering. Wheatley and wife/writer Amy Jump’s latest isn’t for everyone — fair warning to Hardcore Henry detractors, Sharlto Copley refuses to quit his shtick — but those willing to break free from a desire for plot complexity will undoubtedly be entertained. This is low-brow Reservoir Dogs, extreme genre action meant to energize you with an insane cast of characters hell-bent on killing each other on principle. Although that briefcase of money is appealing too.

Bullets and boisterous banter slice through the air in the first red band trailer for Free Fire, the latest film from Ben Wheatley (High-Rise, Kill List).

Once the guns start blazing in Ben Wheatley’s “Free Fire,” they don’t really stop. Prolific British director Ben Wheatley’s massively entertaining recovery from the messy J.G. Ballard adaptation “High-Rise” is a more controlled form of chaos, a chamber piece in which no chamber stays empty for long. Almost exclusively set in the confines of a small warehouse, Wheatley and screenwriter Amy Jump deliver the craziest movie shootout of all time by making an entire movie out of it. The cheeky dialogue and relentless violence leans heavily on the influences of Sam Peckinpah and “Reservoir Dogs,” although in this case the comic mayhem of the protracted battle amounts to little more than a lengthy gimmick. But a what fun gimmick: Less bullet ballet than bullet drum solo, Wheatley’s zany 90-minute set piece borrows the right ingredients to put on a good show.

Two Irishmen, an American and a kick-ass arms dealer (among others) walk into a deserted warehouse; it may sound like the beginning of a flippant gag, but it’s actually the elevator pitch to Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, which has just premiered its breathless first trailer from Tiff 2016.
Issuing a call to arms, Free Fire chronicles the story of Justine (Brie Larson) after she brokers a weapons deal with some old acquaintances, Ord (Armie Hammer) and Vernon (Sharlto Copley). The rendezvous? A shoddy old warehouse that quickly devolves into a cavernous arena once said deal goes south – and fast.
Also starring Peaky Blinders stalwart Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley, Sharlto Copley, and Armie Hammer, Wheatley then stages a ruthless, typically bloody game of life or death. But it’s really the director’s mesmerizing style that arrests our attention. As the filmmaker behind such bleak hits as Kill List, Sightseers...

Writer-director Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseeers, and, most recently, High-Rise) is returning to his crime roots — his directorial debut was 2009’s Down Terrace about a mob family — with Free Fire, which will also mark his first feature to be set in the United States. With a premiere at Toronto International Film Festival last night — and our review coming shortly — A24 have now debuted the first trailer.
Following a deal-gone-sour at a warehouse in 1978’s Boston, the environment becomes a shooting ground where survival is hard to come by. Wheatley has assembled a monster cast with Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Jack Reynor, Noah Taylor, and Michael Smiley.
The trailer features a unique blend of dark comedy, tension, and violence with the entire cast in playful and energetic form. This could be Wheatley’s first film with mass appeal — efforts like Kill List and High-Rise have...

Marquis de Sade’s Justine
Written by Harry Alan Towers (as Peter Welbeck)
Directed by Jesús Franco (as Jess Franco)
Italy/USA/Germany/Liechtenstein, 1969
Justine was the first of 30 Jesús Franco films I watched over the past year. While many have been quite enjoyable (and several have been quite deplorable), this 1969 feature remains my favorite. Others come very close, and there is a solid argument that Justine is in fact a mostly uncharacteristic Franco film, but as a movie that shows the genuine, often untapped talent that this eclectically erratic filmmaker possessed, it is exceptional.
Out now on a new Blue Underground Blu-ray, Justine—officially, Marquis de Sade’s Justine—bears the subtitle, “The Misfortunes of Virtue,” which is indeed the essential theme of the picture. Played by an 18-year-old Romina Power (the character is 12 in de Sade’s novel), Justine is “too good to be true,” according to her dubious sister,...

Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft, told in a variety of styles, from illustrated slideshows to dramatized reenactments of alleged real-life events. Written and directed by Benjamin Christensen, and based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, Häxan is a fine examination of how superstition and the misunderstanding of mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. At the time, it was the most expensive Scandinavian film ever made, costing nearly 2 million Swedish krona. Although it won acclaim in Denmark and Sweden, the film was banned in the United States and heavily censored in other countries for what were considered, at that time, graphic depictions of torture, nudity, and sexual perversion. A while back, when we released the 400th episode of the Sound On Sight podcast, a few close friends and longtime listeners requested we compile a list of our favorite shows we recorded over the years. Now that the podcast has officially come to an end, I decided to finally set aside some time in my schedule and give them what they want. Initially, I set out to pick ten, but after 500 recordings and 8 long years, it was simply too hard to choose so few, so I opted for 20 instead. In selecting these episodes, I tried to show the wide range of genres we covered over the years, including Spaghetti Westerns, Italian Horror, Southern Gothic, underground cult, family friendly, foreign language and even Hollywood classics. We’ve been blessed with several guest hosts and interviews with many filmmakers including genre legends George A. Romero and John Landis, to name a few.

The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein
Written and directed by Jesús Franco
Spain/France, 1972
Since May of this year, I have embarked on an ongoing exploration into the cinema of Jesús Franco. After first viewing Justine (also known as Deadly Sanctuary), one of seven Franco films released in 1969 (his filmography boasts 203 directorial credits from 1957 to 2013), I sought out more of what this infamous Spanish auteur had to offer. Like Justine, some of these films have been extraordinarily entertaining: The Diabolical Dr. Z (1966), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1973), Female Vampire and Women Behind Bars (both 1975), and Bloody Moon (1981). Others, however, have been downright atrocious: Emmanuelle Exposed (1982) and Red Silk (1999), one of the worst films I have ever seen.
The latest addition to what is now a 25-films-and-counting “Summer of Jesús Franco” is The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, available on a new Blu-ray edition from Redemption Films, which has released several other Franco titles.

Between his high profile marriages to Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda, director Roger Vadim engaged in a notable liaison with Catherine Deneuve, just prior to her ascension to international stardom in 1964’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Having brought Bardot to fame with his most notable title, his 1956 debut And God Created Woman, their working relationship would continue across several more titles, even as he married another actress, Annette Stroyberg, who starred in his 1959 version of Dangerous Liaisons and the erotic vampire flick Blood & Roses. Between these flurry of romances, Vadim would return to black and white cinematography (which he seemed to prefer for evoking period) with 1963’s Vice and Virtue a loose adaptation of the Marquis De Sade’s controversial erotic novel Justine for WWII era occupied France, resulting in his only collaboration with Deneuve as the virtuous member of a pair of beautiful sisters surviving on opposite ends of the oppressive Nazi spectrum.

'Emmanuelle' movies producer Alain Siritzky dead at 72 (photo: Sylvia Kristel in 'Emmanuelle' 1974) Emmanuelle franchise producer Alain Siritzky died after what has been described as "a short illness" on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at a Paris hospital. Siritzky, whose credits include dozens of Emmanuelle movies and direct-to-video efforts, several of which starring Sylvia Kristel in the title role, was 72. Ironically, Alain Siritzky didn't produce the original, epoch-making 1974 Emmanuelle. He became involved in that Yves Rousset-Rouard production via his Parafrance Films, which distributed Emmanuelle in France. 'Emmanuelle': 1974 movie sensation A couple of years after the release of Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones (not to mention Boys in the Sand and Eyes of a Stranger), and the year after Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider sparked a furor by having simulated sex in Bernardo Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris, the 1974 French release Emmanuelle still managed to become a worldwide cause célèbre.
