As part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time issue, we asked writers on our staff to name their favorite cult shows — series that may lack the clout, the following, or the prestige to quite notch an entry on our list, but ones for which our writers have a special fondness. Here are seven shows that are, to us, the greatest.
Alias
So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

Close to thirty years after their debut, the Gargoyles will be returning. THR reports that Gary Dauberman and James Wan’s Atomic Monster production company are developing a live-action Gargoyles TV series for Disney+.
Gary Dauberman will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the Gargoyles live-action TV series. There had been rumblings of a live-action Gargoyles movie since the animated series began. Jordan Peele even reportedly pitched a Gargoyles movie to Disney in 2018, but nothing ever came of it. There were rumours that Kenneth Branagh was attached to direct a Gargoyles movie earlier this summer, but Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman quickly shot it down. After so many years of rumours, it’s exciting that something is finally happening with the cult franchise.

The animated Gargoyles series followed a group of nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles who turn to stone during the day.

Earlier this year, we lost Lance Reddick, a brilliant actor and commanding presence in film, television, video games, and beyond. When he wasn’t tending to the needs of assassins in the John Wick franchise or hiding secrets about a zombie apocalypse in Netflix’s Resident Evil series, he voiced Commander Zavala for Bungie’s long-running first-person-shooter video game franchise, Destiny. Sadly, now that Reddick is no longer with us, Bungie must appoint his successor. Thankfully, beloved actor Keith David is stepping into Zavala’s reinforced boots.
Bungie announced David’s appointment to the role on its official website, alongside a heartfelt message about Reddick and his contribution to the franchise:
Earlier this year, we lost Lance Reddick, the English-language voice actor of Commander Zavala. The passion and professionalism Lance brought to the role over the last decade was unmistakable and loved by all. Lance’s iconic voice led us...

Dynamite Entertainment has released a ton of Army of Darkness comic books over the years, but with the upcoming series Army of Darkess: Forever they’re going back to the source: this comic book is a direct sequel to director Sam Raimi’s 1993 film (watch it Here)! And this sequel comes with a bonus in that it continues on from both endings of the film.
While the theatrical cut of Army of Darkness found our time traveling hero Ash back in his own time, working at S-Mart (and fighting a Deadite in the aisles), the director’s cut of the film ends with Ash being dropped into a post-apocalyptic future.
Here’s the information on Army of Darkness: Forever #1: The story picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, jumping between three fun timelines. The Techno Army of Darkness of 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the middle ages chaos of Castle Kandar,...

Update:
Shortly after rumors about Kenneth Branagh adapting the classic animated series Gargoyles to the silver screen took flight, writer Greg Weisman is out here clipping wings, saying the story is false. Many credit Weisman as the creator of Gargoyles, lending more weight to his word than a group of stone-encased protectors of New York City.
“I’m thinking… that it’s flat-out not true,” Weisman tweeted hours after the rumor spread like wildfire on Monday.

“Gargoyles is still my baby. I don’t own it. I don’t get a dime off of it being on Disney Plus. And yet I’m so thrilled that it is, I’m thrilled that it represents a chance — even if it’s a slim chance — to bring it back,” Weisman previously said to Polygon.

The popular 1990s animated TV series ‘Gargoyles’, which defined the childhood of many, has been up for a live-action adaptation for a long while now. Now, Oscar winning actor-director Kenneth Branagh is rumoured to direct a live action movie of ‘Gargoyles’.
As reported by ‘Collider’, the news comes as courtesy of the English actor’s hometown paper of the Belfast Telegraph reported that the director-actor will be at the helm of affairs.
‘Gargoyles’ became a very big pop-culture hit in the 1990s, with attempts of adapting it into a feature film dating all the way back to the late 1990s. However, the attempts didn’t pan out leading to the project going into development hell. It was later brought back into development in 2010 when ‘X-Men’ movie producer Lauren Shuler Donner and ‘Wolverine and The X-Men’ writer Zoe Green began working on a film treatment.

“With the Strength of Ra!” For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Mummies Alive!“, an animated series for kids that aired in syndication back in 1997.
It’s hard to put a finger on why “Mummies Alive!” never really clicked with audiences. Sure, now it’s considered a cult classic and is mostly adored by horror geeks and nostalgia buffs, but back in 1997 “Mummies Alive!” arrived with a roar, and landed with a splat. I blame the lack of success on bad timing. I peg it mainly on the arrival of the 4Kids brand, as by the middle of 1997, 4Kids Anime had made its explosive debut in America with “Pokemon.” Once 4Kids introduced networks to licensed content that brought in big ratings, suddenly the conventional Saturday morning cartoon was dead.
Kids were just more interested in pocket monsters than undead monsters. It seemed to happen almost overnight, and...

The poster tagline states, “Heaven help us all when The Devil’S Rain!”, and if that grammatical train wreck doesn’t break your brain, I promise you the following 86 minutes will. The Devil’s Rain (1975) is a glorious curiosity, a personal favorite, and thanks to Severin Films’ spectacular new Blu-ray release, one of the best reissues I’ve ever seen.
Meet The Prestons: Mark (William Shatner – Kingdom of the Spiders), his mom (Ida Lupino – Junior Bonner), and their ranch hand John (Woody Chambliss – Gargoyles) all await the return of Mark’s dad, and when he finally shows up, his eyes are missing and he starts melting in the rain (how bad is the humidity in the desert, anyway?). From the football field to the film lots, Bernie Casey left an indelible impression with a presence that couldn't be ignored, and we're sad to share the news that the actor has passed away at the age of 78.
According to multiple outlets, including THR, Casey passed away after a "brief illness" at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Before he entered the world of movies, Casey was a star in his own right as a track and field standout at Bowling Green State University. After making it to the finals of the 1960 United States Olympic Trials, Casey was a first round draft pick for the San Francisco 49ers and would go on to play eight years in the NFL as a wide receiver, raking in 40 touchdowns and over 5,000 receiving yards.

Thanks to The Omen (1976) and little Damien’s watchdog, Hollywood figured they could mine some horror from our canine friends, on the assumption that there’s something inherently evil to exploit. Except…they’re not. Are they sometimes vicious? Definitely. But I would hardly call dogs evil, especially ones allegedly in favor with Satan. Which brings us to todays’ Tube, as TV naturally had to take a shot at demonizing our four legged friends, a task at which Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978) fails spectacularly. It is however, a blast and more fun than a bowl full of kibble.
Originally airing on Halloween night of 1978 on CBS, Devil Dog was up against Linda Blair and her demonic cousin in Summer of Fear over on NBC, a true dilemma for horror fans as both satisfy in different ways. But since I’ve already covered that Wes Craven helmed Ya adaptation...

Holy Melting Travoltas! A pair of schlock classics from the early ‘70s both involving horned demons in the desert plotting world domination?!? It must be Krampus Movie Night!
The Krampus Research Association of St. Louis will be throwing their first movie night Monday October 13th at The Heavy Anchor (5226 Gravois, St. Louis 63116) with a double feature of Gargoyles and The Devil’S Rain. This is a Fundraiser for Saint Louis Krampusnacht 2014. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Show starts at 8 p.m. Suggested donation of $5 for admission.

How many versions of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have been released on film? It’s an astounding number at 123 film versions. It may not be quite as many as Dracula or Frankenstein, but it’s in the running if not right on their cape tails. Each age of in horror history attempts to lay its own claim to this tale of chemistry meets the modern scientific man meets the Monster. Who of us can forget Frederic March with his near pompadour hairstyle slightly hunched over with eyebrows all-a-caterpillar? How about Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde; that was Hammer getting cheeky with all of us who had decided that simply redoing Universal horror stories wasn’t good enough in 1971. So what happened between 1886 when Stevenson first unleashed his epic literary tale and the 1970’s when Dr. Jekyll became Dr. Black and...

Gargoyles, the 1972 TV horror movie starring Cornel Wilde (The Naked Prey) and Jennifer Salt (Sisters) will return to DVD from Hen’s Tooth Video on May 17. The film became an instant cult favorite when it was release, and has been very hard to find on VHS over the years, let alone disc.
There's something demonic under the sand in 1972's Gargoyles.
The story shows Wilde playing an anthropology professor who stumbles on a clan of demonic gargoyles while traveling through a Southwestern desert region. Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special effects, creature and makeup artist whose innovative creations include the full-scale animatronic dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park" and the futuristic Terminators, has died. He was 62.
Winston died Sunday at his home in Malibu after a seven-year battle with myeloma, a Stan Winston Studio spokeswoman said.
During a film and TV career that spanned four decades, Winston collaborated with such filmmakers as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron and worked on some of his generation's most memorable films.
He won four Oscars, for the visual effects in "Jurassic Park," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Aliens" and for makeup on "T2." He also earned Oscar noms for his work on "AI: Artificial Intelligence," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," "Predator" and "Heartbeeps."
