‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
Because Emma and Dexter become mildly public figures in the story...

Paul McCartney Said The Beatles Wrote 1 Song With ‘Minimal Effort’ and It Got Played 4 Million Times
Sometimes, celebrities say things that really throw you for a loop. Paul McCartney said one of the wildly popular songs from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul was created with “minimum effort” at “minimum expense.” He wanted this track to serve as a blueprint for other bands. John Lennon revealed the tune was inspired by another essential 1960s artist.
The Beatles never bothered to make a song from ‘Rubber Soul’ sound funkier
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul discussed the creation of “Michelle” from Rubber Soul. “We never remixed it for dance, we never did a funky mix,” he said. “That was the end of it and it’s still around and it’s still a popular song, still clocking up numbers on the little tachometer or whatever it is they’ve got: four million broadcast performances. From that one little thing. Minimum effort, minimum expense, minimum everything.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon put so much extra work into their music sometimes that it’s remarkable. For example, they once turned the handwritten lyrics of a song from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul into a work of art. The piece soon fell into the possession of a famous musician.
Paul McCartney got high and made colorful art inspired by The Beatles’ ‘Rubber Soul’
On the surface, The Beatles’ “The Word” isn’t much of a psychedelic song. It has more in common with the Motown music of the 1960s than Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite this, “The Word” has hippie vibes. It proclaims the importance of love, which The Beatles would later do in their most popular psychedelic song, “All You Need Is Love.” “The Word” also paved the way for John’s high-minded solo songs like “Imagine” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over).”

The Beatles‘ No. 1 hits are an eclectic group of songs spanning several genres. Despite this, three of the Fab Four’s songs that hit No. 1 in the United States have the same word in the title. That word became a huge part of The Beatles’ brand.
3 Beatles No. 1 hits have the same word and 1 has a similar word
Twenty of The Beatles’ songs topped the Billboard Hot 100. Those songs are “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Eight Days a Week,” “I Feel Fine,” “A Hard Days Night,” “Help!,” “Hey Jude,” “Hello, Goodbye,” “Let It Be,” “Get Back,” “Yesterday,” “We Can Work It Out,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Penny Lane,” “Paperback Writer,” “The Long and Winding Road” / “For You Blue,” “Come Together” / “Something,” “She Loves You,” “Love Me Do,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “All You Need Is Love.” Notably, “Love Me Do,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “All You Need Is...

A majority of The Beatles’ songs were relatively short because that’s what fits better for radio play. Besides ‘Hey Jude’, most of their hits were three or four minutes. In one of his more experimental modes, Paul McCartney developed a 15-minute song that he got The Beatles to play with him. It’s still never been released, but the former Beatle said it could see the light someday.

Alex Mahon, the CEO of British broadcaster Channel 4, has warned that producers need to innovate in the same way as tech giants such as Twitter and Netflix in order to come up with non-scripted formats that are “less repetitive”.
The former Shine Group boss used her keynote address at the Mip TV market in Cannes, to warn that it needs to use its schedule, particularly its late-night or daytime hours, to “open up risk”.
“Producers need to innovate in the same way as tech companies,” she said. “Technology platforms have changed consumer relationships. Twitter has changed the length of time of a video or text a consumer will get involved in. YouTube has changed the quality of production values people will accept. Netflix has change the emotional connection people have with content through bingeing,” she said.

With little over a month until The Caped Crusader’s anticipated return, Rocksteady’s marketing campaign for Batman: Arkham Knight is beginning to reach its almighty crescendo. After detailing the threequel’s intriguing Dual Play mechanic last week, the studio has given Gotham the live-action treatment in the latest trailer, giving the franchise’s ardent fanbase an opportunity to “Be the Batman.”
Playing out from different perspectives across the crime-ridden city, the footage essentially runs down the characteristics of The Word’s Greatest Detective: Selfless, determined, courageous and feared. And while it’s all very over-the-top and not indicative of the final product, it’s still a neat package to garner excitement for Arkham Knight‘s debut in a month’s time.
Billed as the conclusive chapter in Rocksteady’s acclaimed series, Batman: Arkham Knight will orbit around a villainous army of crooks assembled by Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow; a...
