John Roland, who served as a reporter and anchor for Channel 5 in New York for more than three decades, died Sunday, a rep for Fox Television Stations announced. He was 81.
In December 1969, Roland left Kttv in Los Angeles to join sister Metromedia station Wnew in New York as a general assignment reporter. He covered politics during the week and anchored the 10 p.m. newscast on weekends before taking over for Bill Jorgensen on the flagship 10 p.m. weeknight edition in 1979. (News Corp. and Fox took control of the station in 1986, and it was rebranded as Wnyw.)
Roland left the 10 p.m. post in 2003 to anchor new newscasts at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., then retired to Florida in June 2004.
“I want to thank you for inviting me into your home for all these years,” he said on the air when he departed. “It’s an invitation I never took...

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. On top of being 2014's Miss Golden Globe, through her father Kevin Bacon, she is connected to nearly everyone in Hollywood - including every other previous Miss Golden Globe, most of whom are also the daughters (or sons) of industry power players. And while some have a connection through their famous parents, others, such as Laura Dern (who happens to have famous parents), are also connected through their own work. Don't believe us? Leonard Harris, known in the New York area as an arts and theater critic for the local CBS television affiliate in the '60s and early '70s, died of pneumonia in Hartford, Conn., on Sunday. Harris was 81. Outside of New York, Harris was known for his role as Senator Charles Palantine in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). In the Oscar-nominated drama, Palantine is running for president on a platform of radical social change, at one point sympathizing with Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a mentally unbalanced taxi driver-turned-vigilante who wants to rid New York of its "scum and filth." The eventual results aren't pretty. Palantine is also the link between Bickle and the senator's presidential campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a classy-looking blonde with whom Bickle becomes obsessed. According to Harris' New York Times obit, Scorsese knew Harris "through the New York drama scene." Harris played another politician, a mayor,...

With a name like "Kick-Ass," you know what you're in for. Or maybe you don't, and that's the beauty of this stylish, action-packed and gloriously entertaining superhero satire from director Matthew Vaughn ("Layer Cake"). The truth is, it's not for everybody, especially when a foul-mouthed 11-year-old girl takes down a room full of thugs in a blood-soaked brawl. But for comic book fans looking for a cool and clever deconstruction of the genre, this R-rated cross between "Superbad" and "Kill Bill" ...

There is a League of Fake Superheroes, and it has a long and storied history in the annals of cinema. Way back in 1980, which is the same year "talkies" were invented, there was a slight but somehow memorable John Ritter comedy called Hero at Large, which was about an actor who dons a superhero costume and roams around the city doing good. Needless to say, real danger gets in the way of the fun. Films as varied as Watchmen, Kick Ass, Mystery Men, and Special have all touched upon the fascinating issue of "everyman superheroism," although none have done it quite as ... oddly as Peter Stebbings' Defendor.
Here we have a protagonist (played powerfully well -- as usual -- by Woody Harrelson) who is clearly a few cards short in the full deck department. Good-natured and entirely likable, Arthur Poppington is also the sort of guy who dons a...

Did you know that Canada makes movies? It's true, and often they're actually quite good. Exotica, Maelstrom, Porky's, the work of David Cronenberg, but now the Canadians are turning it up a notch and throwing their beaver fur hats into the biggest film genre yet. Take a look at Canada's first superhero film... Defendor! Harrelson's gruff Christian Bale impression at the end of the trailer is awesome isn't it? The movie looks to be an interesting mix of last year's Special and John Ritter's underappreciated 1980 gem, Hero At Large, which can only be a good thing. The trailer isn't really paced all that well, but it hopefully gives a good idea as to the film's intertwined humor and pathos. Here's Defendor's synopsis courtesy of Twitch: Reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor, and...
